Vol.22 No.5
This research aims to study the significance of Kulim Kim‘s avant-garde art, who made the early step to experimental art in Korea. The subject of the study is mail art, happenings, and the Fourth Group movement that he participated in from 1969 to 1970. < Relics of Mass Media >, < Condom & Carbamine >, and < The Happening on the Overpass > were the series of works that Kim and his fellow artists performed for the new form of art, avant-garde. < Relics of Mass Media > introduced and implemented letters as a new medium to Korean art. The recipients of the letter became creators of the art and the value. The work, < Condom & Carbamine >, tried to break the stereotypes of objects and perceptions that proposed a new way of art appreciation. At < The Happening on the Overpass >, more than a hundred balloons were hung on the overpass and allowed pedestrians to walk through, was also a new attempt that inevitably required the participation of people. The artist intended to break boundaries made between the artist and the audience in the production and reception of the art. Later, he went ahead to the culture-criticizing works by participating in the Fourth Group. While insisting on the liberation of human nature and criticizing the existing art and culture, the Fourth Group pursued conceptual art. Although Kim is regarded as an avant-grade artist, the question has remained unanswered as to what Kim's avant-garde is. This study will explore the answers in the artist's attempt that pursued a new art, and expand it through Renato Poggioli's avant-garde theory. As Poggioli has stated, the understanding of avant-garde art is possible when it gives legitimacy to the existence of new art itself and recognizes its necessity. From that point of view, Kim's works, dealt with in this study, have meanings that occupy the beginning period of the experimental art of Korea. His works sensed a demand given by the time he lived in; to change the content and form of art and actualize it in artistic forms.
NMR and Fluorescence Studies of DNA Binding Domain of INI1/hSNF5
Lee, Dongju,Moon, Sunjin,Yun, Jihye,Kim, Eunhee,Cheong, Chaejoon,Lee, Weontae Korean Chemical Society 2014 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.35 No.9
INtegrase Interactor 1 protein (INI1/hSNF5) or BRG1-associated factor 47 (BAF47) is a SWI/SNF-related matrix associated actin dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily B member. DNA binding domain of INI1/hSNF5 is cloned into E.coli expression vectors, pET32a and purified as a monomer using size exclusion chromatography. NMR data show that $INI1^{DBD}$ has folded state with high population of ${\alpha}$-helices. By fluorescence-quenching experiments, binding affinities between $INI1^{DBD}$ and two double stranded DNA fragments were determined as $29.9{\pm}2.6{\mu}M$ (GAL4_1) and $258.7{\pm}5.8$ (GAL4_2) ${\mu}M$, respectively. Our data revealed that DNA binding domain of INI1/hSNF5 binds to transcriptional DNA sequences, and it could play an important role as a transcriptional regulator.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Introduction</B></P> <P>The detection of <I>BRCA1/2</I> mutations is important because PARP1 inhibitors are approved for germline and/or somatic <I>BRCA</I>-mutated advanced ovarian cancer. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is increasingly used in clinical practice for <I>BRCA1</I>/2 mutations. The purpose of this study was to consider several conditions of NGS <I>BRCA1/2</I> assay applicable to clinical laboratory tests, in particular for using formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) ovarian tissues.</P> <P><B>Materials and methods</B></P> <P>We selected 64 ovarian cancer patients and performed Oncomine™ BRCA assay using FFPE tissue. Effect of FFPE sample quality was analyzed by NGS quality parameters including deamination metric. Somatic variants were selected by removing germline variants of peripheral blood and interpreted as pathogenic, variants of unknown significance, and false positive.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>We found a positive relationship between the number of variants over the deamination metric and FFPE age (<I>P</I> < 0.001) with a cutoff values of approximately 0.7 and 60 months, respectively. When comparing NGS results with Sanger sequencing, NGS misreported 3 of 15 variants using default parameters which were corrected after changing parameters. We detected somatic variants in eight patients and classified them into pathogenic (n = 3), VUS (n = 3) and false positive (n = 2).</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>This study is important for improving <I>BRCA1/2</I> mutation detection capabilities of NGS analytical pipelines and strategy to overcome their limitations using FFPE tissue in ovarian cancer patients.</P>

<P>Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used for the modulation of stroke patients' motor function. Recently, more challenging approaches have been studied. In this study, simultaneous stimulation using both rTMS and tDCS (dual-mode stimulation) over bilateral primary motor cortices (M1s) was investigated to compare its modulatory effects with single rTMS stimulation over the ipsilesional M1 in subacute stroke patients. Twenty-four patients participated; 12 participants were assigned to the dual-mode stimulation group while the other 12 participants were assigned to the rTMS-only group. We assessed each patient's motor function using the Fugl-Meyer assessment score and acquired their resting-state fMRI data at two times: prior to stimulation and 2 months after stimulation. Twelve healthy subjects were also recruited as the control group. The interhemispheric connectivity of the contralesional M1, interhemispheric connectivity between bilateral hemispheres, and global efficiency of the motor network noticeably increased in the dual-mode stimulation group compared to the rTMS-only group. Contrary to the dual-mode stimulation group, there was no significant change in the rTMS-only group. These data suggested that simultaneous dual-mode stimulation contributed to the recovery of interhemispheric interaction than rTMS only in subacute stroke patients. This trial is registered with NCT03279640.</P>
Polymeric white organic light-emitting diodes with two emission layers.
Lee, Sungkoo,Im, Yirang,Lee, Kyeong K,Lim, Eunhee American Scientific Publishers 2012 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.12 No.4
<P>A white light-emitting diode was fabricated by preparing multilayer emitting films with an inserted buffer layer. The device structures are ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Emissive layer/LiF/Al. The emissive layer comprises a yellow-emitting layer of Poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl]-co-1,4-benzo-(2,1,3)-thiadiazole (F8BT), a blue-emitting layer of Poly[9,9-di-(2'-ethylhexyl)fluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (BEHF) and PEDOT:PSS as a buffer layer between the emission layers. The solution processed multi-layer polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) were prepared by introduction of a water-soluble buffer layer between organic solvent soluble layers. We present white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) that has bilayer emission zones. This device exhibits a brightness of 280 cd/m2 and emission efficiency of 1.18 cd/A at 12.6 V. The device with a doped PEDOT:PSS layer and a thicker blue-emission layer exhibits CIE color coordinates of (0.30, 0.34), which is close to the white coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) used by the standard CIE color coordinates.</P>
