Run-Time Adaptive Workload Estimation for Dynamic Voltage Scaling
Sung-Yong Bang,Kwanhu Bang,Sungroh Yoon,Eui-Young Chung IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on computer-aided design of inte Vol.28 No.9

Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is a popular energy-saving technique for real-time tasks. The effectiveness of DVS critically depends on the accuracy of workload estimation, since DVS exploits the slack or the difference between the deadline and execution time. Many existing DVS techniques are profile based and simply utilize the worst-case or average execution time without estimation. Several recent approaches recognize the importance of workload estimation and adopt statistical estimation techniques. However, these approaches still require extensive profiling to extract reliable workload statistics and furthermore cannot effectively handle time-varying workloads. Feedback-control-based adaptive algorithms have been proposed to handle such nonstationary workloads, but their results are often too sensitive to parameter selection. To overcome these limitations of existing approaches, we propose a novel workload estimation technique for DVS. This technique is based on the Kalman filter and can estimate the processing time of workloads in a robust and accurate manner by adaptively calibrating estimation error by feedback. We tested the proposed method with workloads of various characteristics extracted from eight MPEG video clips. To thoroughly evaluate the performance of our approach, we used both a cycle-accurate simulator and an XScale-based test board. Our simulation result demonstrates that the proposed technique outperforms the compared alternatives with respect to the ability to meet given timing and Quality of Service constraints. Furthermore, we found that the accuracy of our approach is almost comparable to the oracle accuracy achievable only by offline analysis. Experimental results indicate that using our approach can reduce energy consumption by 57.5% on average, only with negligible deadline miss ratio (DMR) around 6.1%. Moreover, the average of computational overheads for the proposed technique is just 0.3%, which is the minimum value compared to other methods. More importantly, the DMR of our method is bounded by 11.7% in the worst case, while those of other methods are twice or more than ours.

A set-top box (STB) increases its energy efficiency with active standby and passive standby modes. Compared to the active standby mode, the passive standby mode saves more power by turning off more STB functions, but it results in longer activation latency. For an energyefficient STB, in this paper, power saving with the passive standby is studied. The STB operates the passive standby mode when it is not in use, and the passive standby mode is switched to the active standby mode before a user turns on the STB in order to reduce the activation latency. To do that, the passive standby uses activity logs, which are represented in a bitmap form, to find a user pattern and to predict the next user activity. In the presented power saving method with the passive standby, recent activities is reflected with more weights to quickly find a new user pattern, instead of waiting until activity logs for a new user pattern are accumulated. The method is evaluated via simulations and discussed1.

Extended MPEG Video Format for Efficient Dynamic Voltage Scaling
BANG, Kwanhu,BANG, Sung-Yong,CHUNG, Eui-Young The Institute of Electronics, Information and Comm 2008 IEICE transactions on fundamentals of electronics, Vol.91 No.5

We present an extended MPEG video format for efficient Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS). DVS technique has been widely researched, but the execution time variation of a periodic task (i. e. MPEG decoding) is still a challenge to be tackled. Unlike previous works, we focus on the data (video stream) rather than the execution code to overcome such limitation. The proposed video format provides the decoding costs of frames to help the precise prediction of their execution times at client machines. The experimental results show that the extended format only increases the data size less than 1% by adding about 10bits representing the decoding cost of each frame. Also, a DVS technique adjusted for the proposed format achieves 90% of efficiency compared to the oracle case, while keeping the run time overhead of the technique negligible.

N/A Background : Dialysis-induced hypotension is a very common but difficult complication to manage. Amezi-nium methylsulfate is a newly developed sympatho-mimetic agent which has been reported as effective in postural hypotension. We studied the preventive effect of amezinium methylsulfate on dialysis-induced hypo- tension in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods: Twenty-five hemodialysis(HD) patients who were maintaining on hemodialysis longer than 3 months and had frequent episodes of dialysis hypoten-sion were enrolled in this study. After 4 weeks of observation period, patients received one tablet of ameziniurn 30 minutes prior to every hemodialysis session for 4 weeks. We com mean arterial pressure(MAP), number of hypotensive episodes and number of nursing interventions(defined as position change, bolus injection of saline or 50% dextrose in water, need to decrease transmembrane pressure or discon- tinuation of dialysis) between observation and medi-cation period in each patient. Results: The number of nursing interventions (mean, 2.5±0.9 interventions vs. 1.4±0.9 interventions, p<0.05) and hypotensive episodes(mean, 1.7±0.7 episodes per session vs. 0.9±0.7 episodes per session; p<0.05) decreased significantly in the medication period and the nadir MAP(57±13mmHg vs 70±15mmHg; p<0.05), mid-HD MAP(65±15mmHg vs. 79±15mmHg; p<0.05) and post-HD MAP(66±14mmHg vs 78±16 mmHg ; p<0.05) are higher in the medication period compared with observation period. Conclusion : These results show that amezinium methylsulfate is useful to prevent dialysis-induced hypotension in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Following the original severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 strain (Wuhan-Hu-1) in December 2019, the Delta variant in May 2021 and the Omicron variant in December 2021 were classified as variants of concern. The pandemic has been ongoing for more than two years, and the three-dose vaccination rate has reached approximately 50% in Korea. We analyzed anti-S antibodies (Abs) and neutralizing Abs (NAbs) in 32 healthcare workers at a university hospital, focusing on the first to third doses of ChAdOx1-ChAdOx1-BNT162b2, which is the most common vaccination regimen in Korea. Antibodies were analyzed at eight time points according to the vaccine regimen. The first to third doses of ChAdOx1-ChAdOx1-BNT162b2 produced high Ab concentrations; NAb concentrations after the third dose were predicted to remain high for a longer period than those after the first and second doses. The effectiveness of a second dose of ChAdOx1 in the real world was demonstrated by analyzing samples collected during an outbreak that occurred in the study period, 4–5 months after the second dose. The relative risk ratio was 88.0%, and the efficacy of the second ChAdOx1 dose was 12.0% (P<0.05). Therefore, maintaining appropriate Ab concentrations through regular vaccination will help protect against coronavirus disease-19.
