Vol.- No.15
Tasan`s writings on ritual can tell us much about his basic orientation, confirming that, though he was a remarkably original thinker, he stayed within the boundaries of Confucianism. He accepted the Confucian assumption that morality meant appropriate interactions within the human community. He agreed with other Confucians that the state should control ritual performance by its subjects. And, though Tasan believed in one Supreme God, his God was Sangje, the Confucian God. Further evidence for Tasan`s Confucian orientation can be found in his attitude toward burial and mourning ritual. He wrote hundreds of pages outlining his thoughts on the proper way to perform such rituals. Though he may have been influenced by Catholic books from China, in his heart he remained a Confucian.
TRANSLATING LIVES : MOVING BEYOND STATE-CENTERED TRANSLATIONS
2008 Acta Koreana Vol.11 No.1
Korean Studies in the English-speaking world has reached a significant turning point in this first decade of the twenty-first century. If we make the correct turn, it will continue to advance, promoting greater understanding of Korean history and culture in academia as well as a heightened recognition of the distinctiveness of Korean culture in the wider world. However, if we make the wrong turn, Korean Studies could stagnate and grow less, not more, productive. What is the right direction for Korean Studies in the English-speaking world? We have already made a lot of progress in providing material in translation to help our students and others gain access to Korea history and culture through the words of Koreans themselves. However, most of that material has been state-centered, focusing on politics and the cultural productions of the wealthy and well-educated governing elite. We need to move beyond state-centered documents and translate more material on daily life, especially the lives on the non-elite, to give those who can’t read that material in the original a better sense of what it was like to live in Korea a thousand, five hundred, or even just fifty years ago. In this article, I will make some specific suggestions for the type of material we should think about translating.
Taoism in Korea, Past and Present
Baker, Donald DAOS(The Daesoon Academy of Sciences) 2003 대순사상논총 Vol.16 No.-
THE IMPACT OF CHRISTIANITY ON MODERN KOREA : AN OVERVIEW
2016 Acta Koreana Vol.19 No.1
Less than 30% of the South Korean population is Christian. Nevertheless, you cannot understand Korea’s modern religious culture unless you take into account the impact Christianity has had on how religion in general is defined today and on how modern religious communities, both Christian and non-Christian, express their beliefs and values. Over the last three centuries, due to the influence of Christianity, monotheism has become an important feature of Korea’s religious landscape. Moreover, Koreans are much more likely now than they were three centuries ago to form distinct communities composed of both clerics and laity who meet together on a regular basis to affirm their shared beliefs through communal ritual displays of those beliefs. In addition, Christianity has had impact on the secular realm as well. The increased visibility of women in the public sphere today compared to the cloistered lives most of them lived in the Chosŏn dynasty is partially the result of Christianity both providing more formal education for women and also assigning women important tasks outside of the home. Moreover, the vibrant democracy we see in South Korea today would not have come about if Christians had not insisted that the state should not interfere in religious affairs, and if Christian faith had not inspired so many to fight authoritarian governments. For all those reasons, it is no exaggeration to say that it is impossible to understand modern Korean history without taking into account the role Christianity has played in making Korea what it is today.
