        Influences of Narcissism and Culture Type on Self-Image Congruency and Brand Attachment

        This research investigates the individuals of two distinct cultures and attempts to determine whether culture and narcissism play a role in the likelihood for an individual to seek out congruency between a brand image and self-image. A comprehensive research model is presented and defines how a consumer's culture and narcissistic tendencies influence self-image congruency with a favored brand and whether that construct variable can influence the degree to which brand attachment is likely to manifest. The findings indicate that narcissists and individualists are more inclined to form self-image congruency with their favored brands image. Self-image congruency increases the likelihood of brand attachment formation for a consumer. Additionally, the moderating effect of self-efficacy dampens the relationship between self-image congruency and brand attachment, likely due to the more involved nature of individuals high in self-efficacy in regards to their relationship commitment and formation.

        Lyme Disease and YouTubeTM: A Cross-Sectional Study of Video Contents

        Objectives: Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease. People seek health information on Lyme disease from YouTubeTM videos. In this study, we investigated if the contents of Lyme disease-related YouTubeTM videos varied by their sources. Methods: Most viewed English YouTubeTM videos (n = 100) were identified and manually coded for contents and sources. Results: Within the sample, 40 videos were consumer-generated, 31 were internet-based news, 16 were professional, and 13 were TV news. Compared with consumer-generated videos, TV news videos were more likely to mention celebrities (odds ratio [OR], 10.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.13–52.58), prevention of Lyme disease through wearing protective clothing (OR, 5.63; 95% CI, 1.23–25.76), and spraying insecticides (OR, 7.71; 95% CI, 1.52–39.05). Conclusion: A majority of the most popular Lyme disease-related YouTubeTM videos were not created by public health professionals. Responsible reporting and creative video-making facilitate Lyme disease education. Partnership with YouTubeTM celebrities to co-develop educational videos may be a future direction.

        Rapid hydrocarbon dew points by infrared spectroscopy: Results and validation for binary mixtures of methane + {propane, isobutane and butane}

        An industrial hydrocarbon dew point detector based on infrared absorption spectroscopy was tested down to a temperature of 243 K and at pressures up to 10 MPa. Dew temperatures were measured isobarically for pure ethane and mixtures of methane + {propane, isobutane, or n-butane}. Ethane dew temperatures were within ±0.38 K of the reference equation of state prediction. Mixture dew temperatures below the cricondentherm were determined within 0.7 K. At higher pressures, dew temperatures were over-predicted due to the rapid changes in gas density with temperature. Improved performance could be achieved by isochoric operation, and by reducing temperature scan rates.

        Use of Protective Gloves in Nail Salons in Manhattan, New York City

        Objectives: Nail salon owners in New York City (NYC) are required to provide their workers with gloves and it is their responsibility to maintain healthy, safe working spaces for their employees. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency with which nail salon workers wear protective gloves. Methods: A Freedom of Information Law request was submitted to New York Department of State’s Division of Licensing Services for a full list of nail salons in Manhattan, NYC. A sample population of 800 nail salons was identified and a simple random sample (without replacement) of 30% (n=240) was selected using a random number generator. Researchers visited each nail salon from October to December of 2015, posing as a potential customer to determine if nail salon workers were wearing gloves. Results: Among the 169 salons in which one or more workers was observed providng services, a total of 562 workers were observed. For 149 salons, in which one or more worker was observed providing services, none of the workers were wearing gloves. In contrast, in six of the salons observed, in which one or more workers was providing services, all of the workers (1 in 2 sites, 2 in 1 site, 3 in 2 sites, and 4 in 1 site) were wearing gloves. Almost three-quarters of the total number of workers observed (n=415, 73.8%) were not wearing gloves. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that, despite recent media attention and legislation, the majority of nail salon workers we observed were not wearing protective gloves when providing services.

        Growth and nutrient uptake by Palmaria palmata integrated with Atlantic halibut in a land-based aquaculture system

        Palmaria palmata was integrated with Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus on a commercial farm for one year starting in November, with a temperature range of 0.4 to $19.1^{\circ}C$. The seaweed was grown in nine plastic mesh cages (each $1.25m^3$ volume) suspended in a concrete sump tank ($46m^3$) in each of three recirculating systems. Two tanks received effluent water from tanks stocked with halibut, and the third received ambient seawater serving as a control. Thalli were tumbled by continuous aeration, and held under a constant photoperiod of 16 : 8 (L : D). Palmaria stocking density was $2.95kg\;m^{-3}$ initially, increasing to $9.85kg\;m^{-3}$ after a year. Specific growth rate was highest from April to June (8.0 to $9.0^{\circ}C$), 1.1% $d^{-1}$ in the halibut effluent and 0.8% $d^{-1}$ in the control, but declined to zero or less than zero above $14^{\circ}C$. Total tissue nitrogen of Palmaria in effluent water was 4.2 to 4.4% DW from January to October, whereas tissue N in the control system declined to 3.0-3.6% DW from April to October. Tissue carbon was independent of seawater source at 39.9% DW. Estimated tank space required by Palmaria for 50% removal of the nitrogen excreted by 100 t of halibut during winter is about 29,000 to $38,000m^2$, ten times the area required for halibut culture. Fifty percent removal of carbon from the same system requires 7,200 to $9,800m^2$ cultivation area. Integration of P. palmata with Atlantic halibut is feasible below $10^{\circ}C$, but is impractical during summer months due to disintegration of thalli associated with reproductive maturation.

        From the “Cool and Pure” to the “Hot and Bothered” – The ‘Heterodox’ Buddhist Poetics of Hanshan Deqing.

        중국 불교 문학관의 두드러진 특징은 비불교적 시가 종교적 가치를 가질 수 있다는 생 각이 발전한 점이다. 특히 근대 제국시대의 승려들 사이에서는 세속적 시의 종교적인 가치를 이해하려는 다양한 관점이 형성되었다. 이 중 명말의 승려 감산덕청이 제기한 관점은 특별하여, 전통적인 관점과 극명한 대조를 이룬다. 중국 불교 총림의 속시(俗詩) 에 대한 종교적 가치 개념의 다원성과 정교성을 밝히기 위해, 본고는 감산이 유배된 후 의 시선(詩禪)에 대한 논술의 형성과 구조를 분석했고, 이 논술이 후대에 미친 영향을 탐 구했으며, 교리적 연원 이외에도 감산의 개인체험이 그의 논술에 준 영향을 함께 탐구 했다. 이는 시적으로 ‘청정’을 묘사하는 종교적 가치에 대한 전통적인 생각을 논하는 것 으로 시작된다. 이후 감산이 중국 남부의 열대 지역으로 유배된 뒤 지옥처럼 더운 장면 을 묘사하는 시의 종교적 가치를 어떻게 긍정하기 시작했고, 이러한 사상적 변화가 어 떻게 『능가경』과 상호영향을 주고받았는지 분석했다. 그는 지옥·몽경(夢境)·몽어(夢語) 의 3가지 개념으로 유심파 사상에 영향을 받은 새로운 관점을 창조했으니, 유배시와 선의 동일성이다. 마지막으로 감산의 시론이 중국 남부 승려들에게 미친 영향을 설명 하고, 시선(詩禪)에 대한 전통적인 방법론을 벗어나 새롭게 탐구할 것을 주장하였다. A distinctive feature of Chinese Buddhist literary theory was the development of the idea that non-Buddhist poetry can have religious value. This is commonly associated with the idea that the ‘pure and cool’ (清淨) scenes of some landscape/reclusive poems celebrated Buddhist eremitic ideals, and could even reflect the inner ‘coolness and purity’ of the enlightened author. However, especially in the late imperial period, less widely celebrated ways of understanding the Buddhist value of secular poems were proposed by monastic writers. Of these, the rubric advanced by the eminent late Ming cleric Hanshan Deqing (憨山德清) is particularly marked on account of its stark contrast with more established conventions – he proposed that poems which depicted agitated emotions prompted by ‘steamy’ and defiled scenes were ideal resources for enlightening Buddhist disciples. These ideas emerged after Hanshan was exiled to Lingnan (Guangdong), and were attributed to religious insights he developed as a result of this bitter experience – in particular, revelations in relation to the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. These ideas arguably exerted some influence on monastic writers – especially those who were similarly exposed to political violence as a result of the collapse of the Ming dynasty. Aiming foremost to contribute to a greater awareness of the diversity and sophistication of monastic discourses on the religious utility of poetry, this article discusses the formation and constitution, and tentatively explores the influence of, the post-exile writings on poetry-Chan of Hanshan Deqing. Its methodology is somewhat unconventional in that, in line with the approach to Hanshan’s thought of Sung-peng Hsu, it seeks to uncover both the doctrinal and experiential influences that shaped Hanshan’s unique approach to poetryChan. It begins by briefly discussing conventional ideas on the religious value of poetically depicting ‘pure and cool’ settings. It then discusses how, subsequent to Hanshan’s exile to the tropics of southern Lingnan, he began to affirm the religious utility of poems which depict steamy, “hellish” settings, and analyzes how this transformation was related to Hanshan’s post-exile revelations regarding the Laṅkāvatāra. It explores, in particular, how the notions of “hell”, “dreamlike-ness” and “dream-speech” were drawn upon to construct new, Mind-only school-inspired theories on how genres such as frontier/exile poetry can be radically identified with Chan. The last section briefly explores the influence of Hanshan’s unorthodox emancipatory poetics in Qing dynasty southern Chinese monastic orders, and encourages further studies aimed at challenging the relatively narrow purview of conventional approaches to poetry-Chan.
