Audit Quality and Stock Return Co-Movement: Evidence from Vietnam
PHAM, Chi Bich Thi,VU, Thu Minh Thi,NGUYEN, Linh Ha,NGUYEN, Dung Duc Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.7
This paper aims to explore the relationship between the quality of the audit and the level of stock return co-movement in the context of the Vietnamese emerging market. The empirical study is designed based on the quatitative method and deductive approach. The panel dataset includes 256 listed firms from different industries, with 1115 firm-year observations on Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange for the period from 2014 to 2018. In the research, we built the econometric regression model, using stock return synchronicity and audit quality as the dependent and independent variable, respectively. Some control variables are also added to the econometric regression models as they are well-documented in prior research to have an effect on stock price synchronicity. To improve the accuracy of the regression coefficients, beside the Ordinary Least Squares, we employ the Random Effects Model and the Fixed Effects Model for better statistical analysis of panel data set. The results show that the quality of the audit is positively correlated to stock price synchronicity. This finding suggests that stock returns of companies with higher quality of the audit are more synchronous with the market. Results for other control variables also support our reasoning for the main findings.

The behavior of rPUf (polyurethane foam derived from bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET)recovered from post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate)-PET bottles) and cPUf (polyurethane foambased on a commercial polyol) were evaluated by comprehensive characterizations, and their thermalstabilities, flammabilities, and physical properties were compared. Without using aflame retardant, rPUfpassed the UL-94HB standard, whereas cPUf burned rapidly to the holding clamp. Various formulationsof rPUf and cPUf with established eco-friendlyfire retardants (FRs), including triphenyl phosphate, aluminum diethylphosphinate, and aluminum trihydroxide, exhibited notably higherfire resistance. Thedifferences between the experimental and calculated densities showed the effectiveness of the foamingprocess. A larger difference indicated that the FR improved the foaming process more. The BHET structurecontains an aromatic moiety that strongly enhanced the compressive strength and protected the rPUf/FRsfrom biodegradation, as evidenced by sorption isotherm experiments. For that reason, the rPUf/FRs couldbe used as building materials, especially under high humidity conditions. These are the advantages ofBHET over the commercial polyol for PUf preparation. Chemical recycle of post-consumer PET bottles toproduce high performance PUf could be applied on an industrial scale and then it creates the sustainablerecycling industry.

A total of 310 BC2F2 lines derived from the cross of OM5930/N22 were evaluated for heat stress at flowering. Genetic map was set up with 264 polymorphic SSRs to detect linkage to the target traits. The map covers 2,741.63 cM with an average interval of 10.55 cM between two marker loci. Markers associated with heat tolerance were located mostly on chromosomes 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11. The proportion of phenotypic variation explained by each QTL ranged from 17.1% for RM160 to 36.2% for RM3586. Four QTLs were detected for filled grains per panicle on chromosome 4 at the interval of RM468 - RM7076 and RM241 - RM26212, explaining 13.1 and 31.0% of the total phenotypic variation, respectively. Two QTLs controling unfilled grain percentage was also detected at loci RM554 and RM3686 on chromosome 3 explaining 25.0 and 11.2% of the total phenotypic variance. One QTL was detected for 1,000-grain weight located at the locus RM103 on chromosome 6, explaining 30.6% of the total phenotypic variance. Also, a QTL at the locus RM5749 on chromosome 4 was identified which explained 10.8% of the total phenotypic variance of grain yield. A single QTL at the interval of RM3586- RM160 on chromosome 3 was detected in conformity with the QTL findings for heat tolerance in previous studies.

A total of six markers RM3586 and RM160 on chromosome 3 and RM3735, RM3471, RM3687 and RM3536 on chromosome 4 were used to select promising lines in backcrossing populations for heat tolerance at flowering stage in rice. Fifty lines selected in BC3F2, BC4F1, and BC4F2 and parents were planted in 2013, and 2014 dry seasons at the CLRRI field under natural heat stress and greenhouse to evaluate heat tolerance at the reproductive period. Heat tolerance scoring under field condition was based on percentage of unfilled grains. All selected lines exhibited their homozygous alleles with two heat tolerance germplasm N22 or Dular in QTL loci. Twelve lines harboring homozygous alleles to QTL loci RM3586 on chromosome 3 and RM3735 on chromosome 4, respectively were selected and evaluated to agronomic traits and yield potential. Four lines BC4-1-10-1 from OM5930/N22//4 *OM5930, BC4-5-8 from OM5930/Dular//4*OM5930, BC4-5-9-4 from AS996/N22//4*AS996, and BC4-6-3 from AS996/Dular//4 *AS996, respectively were finally selected to would be for regional adaptable test in Central Coast of Vietnam under heat stress condition to release to rice farmers.

In the context of the need to ensure appropriate signalling of the publication of high-quality, international-calibre publications in Vietnam, as well as new policies to improve the quality and effectiveness of scientific research in Vietnam, it is practical to investigate the possibility of developing a national open access database (NOAD). This study aims to answer the question of whether it is necessary to establish a NOAD in Vietnam. We used document analysis to evaluate issues related to NOADs. The results of this study show the complexity, lack of consistency, and difficulty in obtaining practical statistics and assessing research and scientific records in Vietnam today. Furthermore, the findings of this study imply that it is necessary to establish a NOAD of scientific research in Vietnam. The information in this report can be used to develop a NOAD for Vietnam in particular, and for any country that lacks one in general.

Purpose: Predicting the financial distress distribution of an enterprise is important to warn enterprises about their future. Predicting the possibility of financial distress helps companies have action plans to avoid the possibility of bankruptcy. In this study, the author conducted a forecast of the financial distress distribution of enterprises. Research design, data and methodology: The forecasting method is based on Logit and Discriminant analysis models. The data was collected from companies listed on Vietnam Stock Exchange from 2012 to 2020. In which there are both companies suffer from financial distress and non-financial distress. Results: The forecast analysis results show that the Logistic model has better predictability than the Discriminant analysis model. At the same time, the results also indicate three main factors affecting the financial distress of enterprises at all three research stages: (1) Liquidity, (2) Interest payment, and (3) firm size. In addition, at each stage, the impact of factors on financial distress differs. Conclusions: From the results of this study, the author also made several recommendations to help companies better control company operations to avoid falling into financial distress. Adjustments to current assets, debt, and company expansion considerations are the most important factors for companies.

2D materials have unique physical and chemical properties which can be used for spintronic device applications, such as the long spin relaxation time of graphene. Additionally, the related heterostructures provide the unprecedented probability of combining the different characteristics via the proximity effect. In this work, ultra-thin Co films were grown on CVD-grown Gr and h-BN layers using the UHV-MBE system. In order to characterize unconventional magnetic properties of 6 ~ 8 nm thick Co films, anisotropy of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) was investigated. The MTJs of x-nm Co (x = 6 and 8)\1.6-nm MgO\12-nm Co were prepared using UHV-MBE system on CVD-grown Gr and h-BN. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) was clearly shown at room temperature (RT) in all the Co bottom electrodes prepared on both graphene and h-BN. Interestingly, for the MTJs grown on h-BN, a very large MR value of more than 700%, was observed with the large PMA, while a few tenth percent of MR values were measured for the Co films grown on Gr layers. Considering theoretical report of an active role of the Co/graphene interface in the magnetism of Co, which allows us to sustain PMA, analysis of interface properties between Co and 2-D materials layers is a prerequisite for understanding their magnetic properties. The development of high-quality ferromagnetic thin films in contact with 2D materials is a state-of-the-art growth technique, whereas only thick polycrystalline or three-dimensional morphologies have been demonstrated so far. We report on the growth of flat, epitaxial ultrathin Co films on h-BN and graphene using UHV-MBE deposition technique.
