        Accusative Case in Passives

Vol.16 No.3

This paper explores the survival of accusative case in passives. I argue that the selectional relation between an external argument introducing head and a verb that assigns accusative case via Agree is crucial in accounting for the survival of accusative case in passives. I also show that there are at least two different passive Voice heads in natural languages, which is also responsible for the survival of accusative case in impersonal passives.

Vol.28 No.3

Languages like Korean employ evidentiality markers such as Inference -kyess-, Sensory -ney/-te-, Reportative -ay, and Quotative -ko. These evidentiality markers receive interpretations outside the scope of negation and certain adverbs are associated with a particular evidential marker. In addition, certain evidentiality markers co-occur while other evidential markers exhibit a co-occurrence restriction. In order account for these facts, the current paper proposes a slightly complicated but fine structure of C area with evidentiality markers. Each evidentiality marker occurs on the relevant functional head in the C domain. By positing this fine structure of CP, the facts that evidentiality is out of the scope of negation and the choice of certain adverbs as well as the selectional restrictions between the functional heads can be accounted for.

Pre-editing

2022 ESP REVIEW Vol.4 No.1

The purpose of this study is to propose simplified pre-editing rules of Korean-English machine translation for ordinary users of AI-based translators. Pre-editing is the process by which an author edits text before applying machine translation in order to improve the quality of the output of machine translation. While some pre-editing rules are universal such as avoiding syntactically complex structures or lengthy sentences which cause processing difficulties, some pre-editing rules are language specific and thus unidirectional, such as null subjects and objects. Homophonic words, especially Sino-Korean words, would be mistranslated if the contexts are not clear in a sentence. Mistakes in punctuation would trigger mistranslation as well. The simplified pre-editing rules include the aforementioned 4 rules. A 4-hour online course of the simplified pre-editing rules showed that they were easily acquired and applied to source texts for enhanced machine translation results. In addition to the satisfactory translation results, the ordinary users recognized the similarities and differences between the two languages in the process of pre-editing. In particular, English learners were able to understand and utilize the syntactic characteristics of a pro-drop language such as Korean. Thus, AI-based translators, with the simplified pre-editing rules, can be used in English education for learners to notice similarities and differences between Korean and English.

2023 ESP REVIEW Vol.5 No.2

With the commercialization of generative AI, the development of AI digital textbooks is progressing rapidly in the context of the EdTech industry. AI digital textbooks, based on the Revised 2022 National Curriculum, adopt a cloud-based approach and presuppose the use of generative AI, leading to significant changes in English education. The emergence of generative chatbots, in particular, gives the impression that research on AI chatbot-assisted English education is not keeping up with the times. However, upon closer examination of the strengths and weaknesses of rule-based chatbots, AI chatbots, and generative chatbots, it becomes apparent that there must be a division of labor in applying them to English education. Rule-based chatbots can be used in areas where high accuracy is required, AI chatbots can be used where meaningful practices are employed, and generative chatbots can be used for communicative practices. Furthermore, generative AI shows high potential for creating and transforming learning materials suitable for learners’ levels, as well as for the direct assessment of speaking and writing. By differentiating between the roles of AI digital textbooks and teachers, a more effective English education can be performed, and this can be applied to diverse ESP education areas, offering a customized learning experience.

Nominal Reflexives and Verbal Reflexives : 명사적 재귀성과 동사적 재귀성

        심창용(Sim Chang-Yong) 경인교육대학교 교육연구원 2020 교육논총 Vol.40 No.2

Reflexivity expresses itself in various ways across languages. Some languages uses nominal reflexives like English and other languages express reflexivity by marking on the predicate like polysynthetic languages. Interestingly, there are languages employ both nominal and the verbal reflexives like Telugu and Kannada. In languages that use both the nominal reflexive system and the verbal reflexive system, the verbal reflexive system preempts the reflexive interpretation process. In situations where the verbal reflexive system fails, the nominal reflexive system takes charge of the reflexive interpretation. Thus, both systems exist independently in natural languages and the reflexivity resides on nominal reflexives as well as on verbal reflexives.

        Topic Effects on Interlanguage Production

Vol.19 No.3

The present study examines the topic effects on oral production by L2 learners. A total of 29 six grade elementary school students’ oral production on three different topics was examined for the study. The familiar topics such as introducing self and others elicited significantly fluent oral production, while the non-familiar topic did not. It is also found that L2 learners employed unique syntactic structures with the topics of introducing self and others such as multiple subject constructions and early relative clauses, whereas such syntactic structures were not observed with the non-familiar topic. Thus, a selection of topics must be conducted carefully in research on L2 production.

Vol.18 No.1

This study examined the Intensive Elementary English Teacher Training Program(IEETTP) held in 2011 spring at G National University of Education to evaluate and compare the effects of its types: IEETTP for English Language Proficiency and IEETTP for Teaching English in English (TEE). Following an overview of the IEETTP program, the present study provides the results of the program survey, English proficiency tests and TEE tests that were conducted on 59 trainees. The results indicated that both types of IEETTP program were successful in terms of their curriculum management and improving English teachers' English proficiency and TEE capabilities. Especially, the trainees showed strong satisfaction for the contents of the both types of the program. Two suggestions were proposed in terms of managing the programs of the IEETTP. First, the IEETTP needs to take proaction in recruiting in-service teachers about the goals of the program and has to identify the needs of in-service English teachers in order to reflect those needs in the program. Second, the IEETTP needs to develop a tailored program which can best support main goals of its overall six-month training program.

Vol.26 No.3

With the outbreak of the Corona virus pandemic, schools started their new semester with online classes. While suffering from numerous difficulties, teachers have overcome numerous obstacles to achieve success with online classes. This paper is aimed at reporting on those difficulties and obstacles, how teachers overcame them, and the remaining challenges. Primary English teachers turned out to be in a worse situation than teachers of other subjects due to the heavier dependence on multimedia materials provided by text publishers and the necessity of interactive communication in language acquisition. Issues with copyrights and portrait rights, difficulties in dealing with programs and equipment for online classes, problems of achievement division, and resulting burnout symptoms were addressed. In order to prepare for future online classes, active problem solving is required not only by teachers utilizing collective intelligence but also by educational agencies.

Vol.18 No.3

The current research aims to reveal in-service teachers’ awareness of consulting programs in elementary schools and examines a case of peer-consulting between two elementary English teachers in In-cheon. In the survey, eighty elementary English teachers participated and the results were analyzed. The results show that most teachers were unsatisfied with current school consulting programs because of the rare opportunities of face-to-face consulting and the uni-directional communication system. Nevertheless, most of the elementary teachers admitted that consulting programs are necessary. It is revealed that the consulting process has to be in the form of mutual peer-consulting and teachers’ active participation is vital to improve their teaching abilities. Based on the findings of the survey, a case of mutual peer-consulting was conducted. The results demonstrate that peer-consulting is effective to enhance the teaching abilities and the participants’ confidence in English teaching. The participants were satisfied with the peer-consulting program. Thus, it is imperative to implement the mutual peer-consulting program in each school in order to enhance the teaching ability of novice and/or young teachers.
