The present study aims to devise a special program for gifted English learners which can be applied broadly at Korean public elementary schools. For the purpose, the study surveyed how gifted English learners can be defined, and what their characteristics are, and searched for where special programs for them should be directed. On the basis of the survey and the search, it discussed how gifted English learners in the Korean context can be understood, and how the objectives, the content, the methods and the assessment of special programs for them could be set. Further, it analyzed two cases of such programs in regard to the objectives, the content, the methods and the assessment. One of them is for getting the students read an English fiction speedily and do several language learning activities concerned with the book-reading, and the other is for getting the students do drama activities with several well-known stories. Finally it suggested to apply an English program to a special class of gifted English learners which integrates the two programs, because they were judged to compensate for each other's weaknesses with their strong points. The program capitalizes on the two activities favored in English classes at elementary schools, that is story-reading and role-play, and therefore is expected to be friendly and applicable to relatively a large number of gifted English learners at elementary schools and not to give much burden to teachers.

The study examines recent literature on the effects of primary school English language education on the achievement of its goals and stresses a need to establish a set of more realistic goals for the language program. A review of the relevant literature revealed that the achievement of the affective goals of the primary school English language program has not been sustained throughout primary schooling whereas the attainment of the program's cognitive or communicative goals have been hardly assessed Particularly disturbing is the finding that pupils' interest and confidence in English consistently declines over the years. With due regard for the reality, the study proposes that the program's affective goals should be modified and that its cognitive or communicative goals should be made more realistic. How these can be best done should be one major task of future research on English language teaching at primary school.

This study is to obtain a general view of English education at the kindergarten level via surveys of teaching materials, and interviews with three trainers of kindergarten English teachers in Daegu City. A literature review and a survey of the internet homepages of 20 kindergartens nationwide were made for supplementation. The major survey parameters were: English course (non-)offerings, course types, teacher types, teaching hours, principles and methods of teaching, kinds of teaching materials and their content organization. It appears that kindergartens have reached the point where they cannot survive without offering English courses right now. Almost all kindergartens offer both regular and after-school English courses, and teaching hours are continuing to increase. Most of the teachers are people who are hired by an educational corporation that then dispatches them to the various contracted kindergartens. This study also compares the (unofficial) kindergarten English curriculum with the elementary English education curriculum.

With growing focus on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) under the context of globalization for common good, this study explores a different aspect of the implementation of GCED in primary English education through the teachers’ curriculum literacy. Taking on the critical perspective towards the recent approaches to GCED in primary English education, the author investigated the 2015 revised national curriculum and the current approaches of GCED as well as the concept of teachers’ curriculum literacy in terms of the philosophy of GCED. Based on the analysis, it is argued that in order to foster students’ global citizenship, which is a long-term and essential goal of GCED, GCED program in primary English education must be dealt with a consistent and sustainable approach which stands on the teachers’ curriculum literacy. In this regard, teachers’ curriculum literacy which stands for ability to read and write a curriculum was emphasized, and based on that, an example of GCED program for the fifth grade built on the teachers’ curriculum literacy was suggested. Furthermore, implications to implement GCED in primary English education and the direction of future research were made.

Pre-service elementary school teachers should have an excellent command of English and a better understanding of English-speaking countries’ culture to be effective communicators and teachers of English. Elementary school teacher training institutions across Korea have provided various programs in the curriculum, and extracurricular programs to assist students to improve their English communication skills and teaching abilities. Among the extracurricular programs, English study-abroad programs have been implemented for about a decade. Developing a tailor-made program for the pre-service elementary school teachers is strongly needed to maximize the effectiveness of the training. This research studies the developmental steps that one university of education has taken over the last 7 years to improve the English study-abroad program to meet the needs of students and the circumstantial changes. The period is divided into three stages, and the main characteristics of each stage are discussed. Also, the reasons for change and improvements are explained for each stage. Developed gradually through feedback from the students, teachers, home stay families, and program coordinators over the 7 years, the tailor-made six-week program is suggested. This includes leveled English classes mixed with international students, a TEFL program, a week-long primary school class observation, home stay, and cultural experience activities. The necessity and importance of preparation sessions before the program and follow-up sessions after the program are also discussed.

using English digital textbook on 4th grade students’ writing abilities and self-directed learning attitudes. The participants were 24 4th grade English learners who went through experimental lessons in which they were involved in their writing tasks using digital textbooks. Data collected during the 12 weeks experimental period include pre- and post-writing tests, writing tasks, questionnaires, and the teacher’s observation recordings. The results of data analysis revealed significant improvement on the participants’ writing abilities after the experimental lessons. The same held truth between the first and second writing tasks they completed in each lesson. Regarding self-directed learning attitudes, setting goals and planning, asking questions to the teacher or peers, and studying at home did not show significant improvement. However, intrinsic motivation, looking up materials, and continuous study after completing a task showed significant improvement. The majority of the participants wanted to keep using digital textbook after the experiment. Suggestions for more effective use of digital textbook were made based on the results.
