Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality trends in Spain, 1980-2020

Lucia Cayuela,José Luis López-Campos,Anna Michela Gaeta,Rocio Reinoso-Arija,Aurelio Cayuela 한국역학회 2023 Epidemiology and Health Vol.45 No.-

OBJECTIVES: In Spain, there has been a recent increase in the mortality rate for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in younger women. This study aimed to analyze trends in the COPD mortality rate in Spain from 1980 to 2020, evaluating any differences between genders and age groups. METHODS: Death certificates and mid-year population data were obtained from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics. For both genders, age group-specific and standardized (overall and truncated) rates were calculated by the direct method using the world standard population. The data were analyzed using the joinpoint regression method. RESULTS: In both men and women, the number of COPD deaths increased from 1980 to 1999 (average annual increase of 7% in men and 4% in women), while from 1999 onwards, deaths decreased by -1.0% per year in both genders. In women, there was a significant final period of increase in the 55-59 to 70-74 age groups and a slowing of the decline in the over 75 age group. Additionally, an increase in mortality for the truncated rates was observed for women between 2006 and 2020. In men under 70 years of age, there was an initial period in which death rates remained stable or significantly increased, followed by a period in which they decreased significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows age and gender differences in COPD mortality trends in Spain. Although the data show a downward trend, we have identified a worrying increase in the truncated rates in women for the last few years.

      • MTERF4 Regulates Translation by Targeting the Methyltransferase NSUN4 to the Mammalian Mitochondrial Ribosome

        ,mara, Yolanda,Asin-Cayuela, Jorge,Park, Chan ,Bae,Metodiev, Metodi ,D.,Shi, Yonghong,Ruzzenente, Benedetta,Kukat, Christian,Habermann, Bianca,Wibom, Rolf,Hultenby, Kjell,Franz, Thomas Elsevier 2011 Cell metabolism Vol.13 No.5

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Precise control of mitochondrial DNA gene expression is critical for regulation of oxidative phosphorylation capacity in mammals. The MTERF protein family plays a key role in this process, and its members have been implicated in regulation of transcription initiation and site-specific transcription termination. We now demonstrate that a member of this family, MTERF4, directly controls mitochondrial ribosomal biogenesis and translation. MTERF4 forms a stoichiometric complex with the ribosomal RNA methyltransferase NSUN4 and is necessary for recruitment of this factor to the large ribosomal subunit. Loss of MTERF4 leads to defective ribosomal assembly and a drastic reduction in translation. Our results thus show that MTERF4 is an important regulator of translation in mammalian mitochondria.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► Loss of MTERF4 leads to abolished mitochondrial translation ► MTERF4 forms a complex with the rRNA methyltransferase NSUN4 ► MTERF4 targets NSUN4 to the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit</P>

The Effects of Texturing Induced Microstructural Changes on the Relaxation Behaviour of Polyamide 66 Multifilament Yarns

        Manich, A.M.,Maillo, J.,Cayuela, D.,Gacen, J.,De Castellar, M.D.,Ussman, M. The Korean Fiber Society 2007 Fibers and polymers Vol.8 No.5

Polyamide 66 multifilament yarns are textured in order to be endowed the properties of natural staple fibre yarns for textile applications. Texturing changes crystallinity, orientation and promotes the formation of stable secondary links between the macromolecular chains. Two polyamide yarns with the same linear density but composed of filaments of different fineness were textured by the air-jet and the false-twist procedures. The microstructural changes induced by texturing modify the relaxation behaviour of yarns. By the application of the Nutting#s power law which relates stress, strain and time, the influence of texturing and filament fineness on the relaxation behaviour of the yarns stretched form 15 % to 25 % was studied. Relationships between Nutting#s model parameters and crystallinity, orientation and stability of secondary cross-links formed during texturing were also studied.

A certified plasmid reference material for the standardisation of <i>BCR–ABL1</i> mRNA quantification by real-time quantitative PCR

        White, H,Deprez, L,Corbisier, P,Hall, V,Lin, F,Mazoua, S,Trapmann, S,Aggerholm, A,Andrikovics, H,Akiki, S,Barbany, G,Boeckx, N,Bench, A,Catherwood, M,Cayuela, J-M,Chudleigh, S,Clench, T,Colomer, D,Dar Nature Publishing Group 2015 Leukemia Vol.29 No.2

<P>Serial quantification of <I>BCR–ABL1</I> mRNA is an important therapeutic indicator in chronic myeloid leukaemia, but there is a substantial variation in results reported by different laboratories. To improve comparability, an internationally accepted plasmid certified reference material (CRM) was developed according to ISO Guide 34:2009. Fragments of <I>BCR–ABL1</I> (e14a2 mRNA fusion)<I>, BCR</I> and <I>GUSB</I> transcripts were amplified and cloned into pUC18 to yield plasmid pIRMM0099. Six different linearised plasmid solutions were produced with the following copy number concentrations, assigned by digital PCR, and expanded uncertainties: 1.08±0.13 × 106, 1.08±0.11 × 105, 1.03±0.10 × 104, 1.02±0.09 × 103, 1.04±0.10 × 102 and 10.0±1.5 copies/μl. The certification of the material for the number of specific DNA fragments per plasmid, copy number concentration of the plasmid solutions and the assessment of inter-unit heterogeneity and stability were performed according to ISO Guide 35:2006. Two suitability studies performed by 63 <I>BCR–ABL1</I> testing laboratories demonstrated that this set of 6 plasmid CRMs can help to standardise a number of measured transcripts of e14a2 <I>BCR–ABL1</I> and three control genes (<I>ABL1, BCR</I> and <I>GUSB</I>). The set of six plasmid CRMs is distributed worldwide by the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (Belgium) and its authorised distributors (https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/reference-materials/catalogue/; CRM code ERM-AD623a-f).</P>
