Energy Efficiency Assessment in Plunge-Face Grinding of Cemented Tungsten Carbide Cutting Inserts

Luan Carreira,Amauri Hassui,Carlos Ventura 한국정밀공학회 2023 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.10 No.6

Due to the high demand for electricity in the manufacturing industry and the efforts to reduce environmental impact, investigations to increase energy efficiency in machining processes have been increasingly carried out. However, information on the behavior of insert grinding process is rarely found. Within this context, this work presents results related to the influence of grinding parameters and abrasive tool characteristics on the energy efficiency during plunge-face grinding of cemented tungsten carbide cutting inserts. For this, grinding forces and consumed electrical energy were measured during the process and sustainability indexes to analyze the relation between insert quality (surface and edge roughness) and consumed energy were calculated in different process conditions. As a result, it was observed that grinding parameters had little influence on insert quality, but an increase in the axial feed speed reduced the consumed energy in approximately 60%, leading to sustainability indexes next to one, i.e., to a greater equilibrium between energy consumption and quality properties.

Red Shift of the Raman (FBCARS) Excitation Profile of Iodine from the Absorption Spectrum(I)

Lee, Mu-Sang,Carreira, L.A. Korean Chemical Society 1986 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.7 No.1

Folded Box coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (FBCARS) spectra of the fundamental symmetric stretch(213 $cm^{-1}$) and the first overtone(421 $cm^{-1}$) of $I_2$ have been recorded over the pump wavelength range from 495 nm to 580 nm. The lineshapes were fitted using the least squares method and the A and C term of CARS were calculated. From the fitting of A and C terms, the real(R) and imaginary(I) term intensity of CARS were calculated using harmonic oscillator program. The calculated CARS excitation profile of $I_2$ with R and I term data was about 270 $cm^{-1}$ red shifted from the absorption spectrum.

Overlap Integrals and Recoursion Formulas for Morse Wavefunction

Lee, Mu-Sang,Carreira, L.A.,Berkowitz, D.A. Korean Chemical Society 1986 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.7 No.1

Overlap integrals for the case in which the ground and excited states are represented by Morse potential functions were derived. In order to calculate the spectral intensities in Morse wavefunctions, a method of expanding the wavefunctions of one state in terms of the other was developed to allow the ground and the excited state frequencies to be different. From the expansion of Morse wavefunctions, recursion formulas were developed for variational matrix elements of Morse wavefunctions. The matrix elements can be calculated using these recursion formulas and the diagonalized results which eigenvalues (allowed energies) were all successfully satisfied to Morse energy formulas.

The role of geosciences in the assessment of low-temperature geothermal resources (N-Portugal): a review

        José M. Marques,P.M. Carreira,J.E. Marques,H.I. Chaminé,P.E. Fonseca,F.A. Monteiro Santos,H.G.M. Eggenkamp,J. Teixeira 한국지질과학협의회 2010 Geosciences Journal Vol.14 No.4

The aim of this paper is to review the results of the assessment of low-temperature geothermal resources (issue temperatures between 41 and 77℃) that occur in the Portuguese mainland. For this purpose, a multidisciplinary approach, including geologic, tectonic, geochemical, geophysical and isotopic (2H, 18O, 13C, 3H and 14C) techniques, was applied in order to update local and/or regional conceptual circulation models. Three case studies of N-Portugal are presented and discussed. This paper describes different low-temperature geothermal waters presenting similar hydrogeological conceptual models but rather different geochemical signatures (e.g., HCO3–Na with pH 8, HCO3/Na/CO2-rich with pH 7 and HCO3–Na with pH 9, type waters). In fact, in the studied low-temperature geothermal systems, local/regional high altitude sites associated with highly fractured rocks play an important role in conducting the infiltrated meteoric waters towards the discharge zones near the Spas. The discharge zones are mainly related to the intersection of major regional fault lineaments (and conjugate structures), responsible for creating the mineral waters ascent. In some cases, geochemical and isotopic data point out to the existence of anthropogenic contamination of some geothermal spring waters related to the intense use of fertilizers in areas of widespread agricultural practices

Thioanisole oxidation promoted by new niobium-based catalyst: The effect of surface hydroxyl groups on catalytic performance

de Aguiar Guilherme Carletti,Batalha Daniel Carreira,Fajardo Humberto Vieira,Filho José Balena Gabriel,Bruziquesi Carlos Giovanni Oliveira,de Oliveira Luiz Carlos Alves,Gonçalves Mateus Aquino,Ramalho 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.10

In this work, the application of a new, synthesized niobium-based catalyst, called S4 (niobium oxyhydroxide), in the liquid-phase oxidation of methyl-phenyl sulfide (thioanisole) using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant was proposed. The synthetic method employed provided a material with low crystallinity and high specific surface area and acidity. A commercial material, called HY-340 (hydrated niobium oxide), was also employed as heterogeneous catalyst for comparative purposes. The results showed that the synthesized S4 material is an outstanding catalyst, being able to completely convert the substrate (thioanisole) that achieves almost 90% of selectivity for methyl phenyl sulfone formation, under mild reaction conditions. According to the theoretical and experimental combined results, the superior performance of S4 catalyst is related to the better interaction of H2O2 and thioanisole molecules with S4 surface, compared to HY-340, pointing to the greater ability of this catalyst to form reactive oxygen species in contact with hydrogen peroxide, due to its higher content of free hydroxyl groups present on its surface.

      • Worldwide comparison of ovarian cancer survival: Histological group and stage at diagnosis (CONCORD-2)

        the CONCORD Working Group,Matz, M.,Coleman, M.P.,Carreira, H.,Salmeron, D.,Chirlaque, M.D.,Allemani, C. Academic Press 2017 Gynecologic oncology Vol.144 No.2

Objective: Ovarian cancer comprises several histological groups with widely differing levels of survival. We aimed to explore international variation in survival for each group to help interpret international differences in survival from all ovarian cancers combined. We also examined differences in stage-specific survival. Methods: The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival, including data from 60 countries for 695,932 women (aged 15-99years) diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 1995-2009. We defined six histological groups: type I epithelial, type II epithelial, germ cell, sex cord-stromal, other specific non-epithelial and non-specific morphology, and estimated age-standardised 5-year net survival for each country by histological group. We also analysed data from 67 cancer registries for 233,659 women diagnosed from 2001 to 2009, for whom information on stage at diagnosis was available. We estimated age-standardised 5-year net survival by stage at diagnosis (localised or advanced). Results: Survival from type I epithelial ovarian tumours for women diagnosed during 2005-09 ranged from 40 to 70%. Survival from type II epithelial tumours was much lower (20-45%). Survival from germ cell tumours was higher than that of type II epithelial tumours, but also varied widely between countries. Survival for sex-cord stromal tumours was higher than for the five other groups. Survival from localised tumours was much higher than for advanced disease (80% vs. 30%). Conclusions: There is wide variation in survival between histological groups, and stage at diagnosis remains an important factor in ovarian cancer survival. International comparisons of ovarian cancer survival should incorporate histology.

Conceptualizing a mountain hydrogeologic system by using an integrated groundwater assessment (Serra da Estrela, Central Portugal): a review

        Jorge Espinha Marques,José M. Marques,Helder I. Chaminé,Paula M. Carreira,Paulo E. Fonseca,Fernando A. Monteiro,Rui Moura,Javier Samper,Bruno Pisani,José Teixeira,José Martins Carvalho,Fernando Rocha 한국지질과학협의회 2013 Geosciences Journal Vol.17 No.3

Mountains are often considered as the world’s water towers. This paper presents a critical review on the research concerning the integrated assessment of groundwater resources of the mountain hydrogeologic system of Serra da Estrela Natural Park (central Portugal). The study area is the Zzere river basin upstream of Manteigas village located at the Serra da Estrela Mountain in Central Portugal. It provides the source of strategic water resources for the Portuguese mainland, including normal groundwaters, thermomineral waters and surface waters. An integrated approach has been used to formulate a conceptual model for this complex mountain hydrogeological system by integrating the geological, morphotectonic, hydroclimatic, unsaturated soil zone, hydrogeological, hydrogeophysical, hydrogeochemical and isotopic data. This model has been useful to: i) evaluate the water resources; ii) provide the basis for a sustainable management of water resources, iii) design measures for groundwater exploitation and contamination control; and iv) set up land-use policies.

(Cyto)genomic and epigenetic characterization of BICR 10 cell line and three new established primary human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cultures

        Ilda P. Ribeiro,Joana M. Rodrigues,Alexandra Mascarenhas,Vanessa Marques,Francisco Caramelo,Maria J. Julião,Thomas Liehr,Joana B. Melo,Isabel M. Carreira 한국유전학회 2019 Genes & Genomics Vol.41 No.10

Background Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines are useful preclinical models to understand the molecular processes underlying the development of such tumors, and to establish targeted therapies. Objective We performed a comprehensive (cyto)genomic and epigenetic characterization of three new established primary human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cultures and an established, yet undercharacterized cell line: BICR 10. Methods Karyotyping, multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization, array comparative genomic hybridization and methylation- specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification were applied. Results The three primary cultures turned out to be a near-triploid and BICR 10 near-diploid. Banding and molecular cytogenetic analysis revealed non-random numerical and structural aberrations. The most common rearrangements identified in BICR 10 cell line were non-complex derivatives of reciprocal translocations, in which the breakpoints often appeared in centromeric/near-centromeric regions. In the 3 primary cell cultures the most common rearrangements observed were iso- and derivatives chromosomes derived from translocations. Overall, gains of 7p, 8q and losses at 3p, 8p, 9p, 18q and Xp were present in all four studied samples. Among the analyzed genes, BICR 10 cell line exhibited enhanced methylation of gene promoter; however, in all studied samples PAX5, WT1 and GATA5 were methylated. Conclusion The here reported comprehensive characterization of BICR 10 cell line and the new established cultures enriches the resources available for head and neck cancer research, especially for testing therapeutic agents.
