Silver-Gold Bimetallic Nanoparticles and Their Applications as Optical Materials

Boote, B.W.,Byun, H.,Kim, J.-H. American Scientific Publishers 2014 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.14 No.2

Recently, nanoscale metallic particles have been studied extensively due to their tunable and strong optical properties that are well beyond those of organic chromophores. As monometallic nanoparticles have shown strong but narrow absorption bands within the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, the preparation of bimetallic core-shell structures can give rise to strong, wide, and tunable absorption bands across the visible to near infrared areas. The silver-gold bimetallic nanoparticles with core-shell structures can offer unique physical and optical properties inaccessible to monometallic systems. These nanoparticles have been utilized in many areas of research including chemical catalysis, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and photothermal therapy. This review article is a comprehensive overview of bimetallic nanoparticle systems consisting of gold and silver; it is based on the recent advances in wet-chemical synthetic methodologies, the characterization of size and shape-dependent optical properties, and various optically driven applications including catalysis, signal-enhancing devices, and biomedical purposes.

일반논문 : 동아시아 연구의 새로운 방향

        ( W. J. Boot ) 성균관대학교 대동문화연구원 2015 大東文化硏究 Vol.92 No.-

In this article I argue a number of conclusions that I have reached in the course of my research in the history of thought of early-modern Japan, which is my special field of expertise. The points I touch upon are (1) the area studies approach and the importance of language studies; (2) the necessity of studying all phenomena in the context of the East-Asian cultural sphere; (3) the advantages of the "knowledge system" approach. Ad 1: If one wants to study any element of an alien culture, one has to acquire a general knowledge of that culture and of the requisite language(s), in order to be able to locate that element in its own context and to do read the sources. Ad 2: Until the middle of the 19th century Japan was in all respects heavily influenced by the canon of Chinese culture. One should be aware of this, and be able to trace these influences. Ad 3: The field of intellectual and artistic endeavour in early-modern Japan was divided differently from the modern academic disciplines; "knowledge systems" provides an approach that makes it possible to avoid this pitfall.

      • Thermal Modelling of Power Modules

        D.Silber,R.Boot,C.Reinermann 전력전자학회 1992 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.1992 No.4

Power modules and smart power devices require sophisticated thermal modelling to take into account thermal interactions, time dependent response of temperature sensors and electrical-thermal coupling. In spite of the availability of powerful software for FEM calculations, analytical methods are still useful to obtain approximations, and thermal networks allow simple combinations of electrical and thermal behaviour. For calculations of temperatures under very different load conditions, the use of system functions will be the most efficient way.<br/>

Nonlinear numerical modelling for the effects of surface explosions on buried reinforced concrete structures

        Nagy, N.,Mohamed, M.,Boot, J.C. Techno-Press 2010 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.2 No.1

The analysis of structure response and design of buried structures subjected to dynamic destructive loads have been receiving increasing interest due to recent severe damage caused by strong earthquakes and terrorist attacks. For a comprehensive design of buried structures subjected to blast loads to be conducted, the whole system behaviour including simulation of the explosion, propagation of shock waves through the soil medium, the interaction of the soil with the buried structure and the structure response needs to be simulated in a single model. Such a model will enable more realistic simulation of the fundamental physical behaviour. This paper presents a complete model simulating the whole system using the finite element package ABAQUS/Explicit. The Arbitrary Lagrange Euler Coupling formulation is used to model the explosive charge and the soil region near the explosion to eliminate the distortion of the mesh under high deformation, while the conventional finite element method is used to model the rest of the system. The elasto-plastic Drucker-Prager Cap model is used to model the soil behaviour. The explosion process is simulated using the Jones-Wilkens-Lee equation of state. The Concrete Damage Plasticity model is used to simulate the behaviour of concrete with the reinforcement considered as an elasto-plastic material. The contact interface between soil and structure is simulated using the general Mohr-Coulomb friction concept, which allows for sliding, separation and rebound between the buried structure surface and the surrounding soil. The behaviour of the whole system is evaluated using a numerical example which shows that the proposed model is capable of producing a realistic simulation of the physical system behaviour in a smooth numerical process.
