Distant Cache Prefetching in CNN Algorithms Run on CPU
Konstantin Bick(빅콘스탄틴),Hyun Kim(김현) 대한전자공학회 2018 대한전자공학회 학술대회 Vol.2018 No.6
As the availability of CPUs still outnumbers FPGAs and GPUs, further analysis of CNN algorithms run on CPU is important. The weak performance of CNN algorithms run on CPUs is further degraded by high cache miss rates in the CNN’s convolution layers which effectively limit the required bandwidth between cache and CPU. Thus, this paper proposes distant prefetching, a new idea in cache prefetching that proves to increase performance over exisiting schemes like Stride Prefetcher or Tagged Prefetcher for CNN algortihms. The improved performance is shown in simulations of VGGnet and TinyYOLO (v2) on the gem5 simulator.

We studied the potential cardiac effects of two alcohol extracts of commercially available hawthorn using rat cardiomyocytes and measuring calcium transients by real-time fluorescence spectrophotometry. One preparation was a blend of hawthorn flowers, leaves, and berries (extract #1), and the other (extract #2) was from a “berries-only” preparation. Fluorescent images and calcium transients were acquired concurrently. Addition of extract #1 resulted in the initiation of robust calcium transients and eventual calcium overload, while addition of extract #2 caused increased calcium sparking, initiation of calcium transients, and an increased beating rate but no calcium overload. To identify the mechanisms of increased calcium influx, adult rat cardiomyocytes were challenged with 10 μM ouabain, a Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitor, and the calcium channel blocker nifedipine. The findings revealed that equal volumes of the two readily available hawthorn preparations demonstrated markedly different effects on isolated adult rat cardiomyocytes, suggesting important implications for patients who are using these preparations to supplement or even replace their prescribed cardiac medications as to which preparation(s) to use, and potential dire consequences, particularly in cardiac patients. Our study indicates that the mechanism of cardiac activity of hawthorn is via the Na+,K+-ATPase and intracellular calcium concentrations are influenced.

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode through the study of the νμ->ντ channel. The hybrid apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2008 and 2009. After a brief description of the beam, the experimental setup and the procedures used for the analysis of the neutrino events, we describe the topology and kinematics of a first candidate ντ charged-current event satisfying the kinematical selection criteria. The background calculations and their cross-check are explained in detail and the significance of the event is assessed.

<P>CONCLUSIONS Beyond CHD, genetically lowered Lp(a) levels are associated with a lower risk of peripheral vascular disease, stroke, heart failure, and aortic stenosis. As such, pharmacological lowering of plasma Lp(a) may influence a range of atherosclerosis-related diseases. (C) 2016 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.</P>
