The Clever Hare in Torobo Folklore

( Shelley Ashdown ) 경희대학교 비교문화연구소 2012 비교문화연구 Vol.28 No.-

The Maa speaking Torobo people inhabiting the southern portion of the Mau Escarpment in Kenya approach both individual and community survival from a relational orientation focused on ethnic identity and responsibility. This social responsibility to the tribe is in stark contrast to Torobo relationships with other ethnic groups. The purpose of the research is twofold. First, the paper explores how folkloric language through a trickster image reflects important cultural and social ideals, understandings, and patterns of thought in Torobo world view. A second purpose is to offer ethnographic information to scholars and students` alike necessary for world view studies of eastern Africa specifically focused on the interplay between anthropomorphic tales and the social context in which these stories are utilized. The key research question for this analysis asks how the trickster image in Torobo folklore conceptualize the life experience, A Torobo folktale entitled, The Clever Hare, is the text chosen for analysis with the hare character as the protagonist, A second query explores the importance of the trickster image in understanding Torobo world view categories of Self and Other, The analysis contributes an ethnographic perspective for the world view categories of Self and Other as well as trickster folklore by examining the nature of Torobo-ness using the tale of the cunning hare as a research tool.

        이정임,주소령,Ashdown, Susan P. 한국의류학회 2004 한국의류학회지 Vol.28 No.2

The purpose of this study was to offer the basis contributes to extract the standardized body data from 3D body measuring for women aged 60 and older. The WB4 of Cyberware was used, and the measuring program of 3D scanning data was 3DM. This study was focused to verify the reliability of 3D data and to offer the effective utilization of 3D measuring on the research for elderly women's body. Subjects were 19 women aged 60 and older. And three women in late twenties and three dressforms for women were comparing subjects to analyze the significant difference by age or human body variable making error. First, 3D scanning was executed twice on each subject, but any significant difference was not appear between two scanning data. So we certified we could get the consistent and reliable data from the 3D scanner used in this study. Second, the reliability of 3D measuring data was analyzed, and the error range which meant the difference between 3D data and traditional measuring data was analyzed. In elderly women, the significant difference between two data was appeared in 19 body parts. The 7 of 19 were concerned with armpit point. In young women, three significant difference were appeared, and in dressforms, any significant difference was not certified. From these results, we could certify that age or human body variable produced the difference between two data. Third, the data of elderly women from three measuring methods, 3D measuring, traditional measuring, and measuring on 2D photographs were compared. From the result, we found that the 3D measuring data was quite reliable for most body parts excluding some width parts. But in elderly women, there were some limitation to extract reliable data because of their unique body characteristics. In order to be a role of the effective measuring method, the 3D measuring protocol reflected the body characteristics of each age or gender had to be prepared.

Vol.23 No.2

This study aimed to know consumer’s attitude toward 3D body scan process and body awareness focused women aged 56-65 to provide basic data in commercial application of body scan data such as automated custom fit, virtual try-on, and personal shopper service. We took three-dimensional body scans of 54 women using the Human Solutions scanner. Participants were scanned twice, once with natural pose and a second scan with their arms held away from their body. After scanning, subjects were asked to fill out a questionnaire focused on their response to the scan process and body awareness. After scan, most of participants had a comfortable feeling for 3D body scan process including clothes for scan, laser light, scan posture, and time. 98% of participants had intention for re-scan for body measurement or virtual fit analysis. Also they were very interested in 3D visualizations. The result of body awareness survey was among the part of their body, the abdomen was the most unsatisfied part. Then they answered weight, waist, hip and thigh in that order as unsatisfied body part. They also had noticed that their body from had changed over the years in abdomen, waist, weight, hip, and thigh. The result shows that weight increase and the distribution of body fat changes especially abdomen, waist, hip and thigh as women get older. Moreover, there is a correlation between body satisfaction and body changes: the respondents unsatisfied their body part which had been changed. Therefore, new technologies would be accepted with consumers" body awareness and a positive attitude toward 3D scan process.

      • A Comparison Study of Brassiere Preferences and Breast Perceptions among the Middle-aged and Older US Women

Kim, Hyo Sook,Kim, Ji Min,Ashdown, Susan P. The Korean Home Economics Association 2014 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.15 No.2

The bra is one of the most essential pieces of women's underwear which gives support for the breasts and holds them in position to make better outer appearance of upper body. Despite being worn by most women of all ages, brassiere manufacturers often use brassiere sizes and shapes that are close to the body measurements of women in their 20s, which raises questions whether the bras are suitable for older women's physique. Also, many lingerie markets tend to center on designs and tastes of younger women, leaving those of older women are largely ignored in the manufacturing process despite the fact that their purchasing power and market shares are expected to grow in conjunction with the aging of the global population. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to provide information about bra preferences and breast perceptions of the middle-aged and older US women over the age of 40 years to help manufacturers better understand the bra purchasing priorities and bra elements of older women and prompt them to design bras with a high level of fit and comfort that are appreciated by the population groups as a means to ultimately acquire competitive edge in the fast growing aging market. An email survey and interviews were conducted with 301 US women who live in New York City. The findings of this study suggest that there are internal and external factors such as changes in body and breast shapes with age influence the level of fitness and effectiveness of bra components, and thus the responses to the questions on bra preferences and breast perceptions varied between the researched age groups.

      • Analysis of Cross Sectional Ease Values for Fit Analysis from 3D Body Scan Data Taken in Working Positions

Nam, Jin-Hee,Branson, Donna H.,Ashdown, Susan P.,Cao, Huantian,Carnrite, Erica The Korean Home Economics Association 2011 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.12 No.1

Purpose- The purpose of this study was to compare the fit of two prototype liquid cooled vests using a 3D body scanner and accompanying software. The objectives of this study were to obtain quantitative measurements of ease values, and to use these data to evaluate the fit of two cooling vests in active positions and to develop methodological protocol to resolve alignment issues between the scans using software designed for the alignment of 3D objects. Design/methodology/approach- Garment treatments and body positions were two independent variables with three levels each. Quantitative dataset were dependent variables, and were manipulated in 3x3 factorial designs with repeated measures. Scan images from eight subjects were used and ease values were obtained to compare the fit. Two different types of analyses were conducted in order to compare the fit using t-test; those were radial mean distance value analysis and radial distance distribution rate analysis. Findings- Overall prototype II achieved a closer fit than prototype I with both analyses. These were consistent results with findings from a previous study that used a different approach for evaluation. Research limitations/implications- The main findings can be used as practical feedback for prototype modification/selection in the design process, making use of 3D body scanner as an evaluation tool. Originality/value- Methodological protocols that were devised to eliminate potential sources of errors can contribute to application of data from 3D body scanners.
