A variety of microbes grow by respiration with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an electron acceptor, and several distinct DMSO respiratory systems, consisting of electron carriers and a terminal DMSO reductase, have been characterized. The heterotrophic growth of a hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 was enhanced by the addition of DMSO, but the archaeon was not capable of reducing DMSO to DMS directly using a DMSO reductase. Instead, the archaeon reduced DMSO via a cysteine-cystine redox shuttle through a mechanism whereby cystine is microbially reduced to cysteine, which is then reoxidized by DMSO reduction. A thioredoxin reductase-protein disulfide oxidoreductase redox couple was identified to have intracellular cystine-reducing activity, permitting recycle of cysteine. This study presents the first example of DMSO reduction via an electron shuttle. Several Thermococcales species also exhibited enhanced growth coupled with DMSO reduction, probably by disposing of excess reducing power rather than conserving energy.

Background: We investigated the long-term effect of AST-120, which has been proposed as a therapeutic option against renal disease progression, in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: We performed post-hoc analysis with a per-protocol group of the K-STAR study (Kremezin study against renal disease progression in Korea) that randomized participants into an AST-120 and a control arm. Patients in the AST-120 arm were given 6 g of AST-120 in three divided doses, and those in both arms received standard conventional treatment. Results: The two arms did not differ significantly in the occurrence of composite primary outcomes (log-rank P = 0.41). For AST-120 patients with higher compliance, there were fewer composite primary outcomes: intermediate tertile hazard ratio (HR) 0.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.38 to 1.01, P = 0.05; highest tertile HR 0.436, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.76, P = 0.003. The estimated glomerular filtration rate level was more stable in the AST-120 arm, especially in diabetic patients. At one year, the AST-120-induced decrease in the serum indoxyl sulfate concentration inversely correlated with the occurrence of composite primary outcomes: second tertile HR 1.59, 95% CI 0.82 to 3.07, P = 0.17; third tertile HR 2.11, 95% CI 1.07 to 4.17, P = 0.031. Furthermore, AST-120 showed a protective effect against the major cardiovascular adverse events (HR 0.51, 95% CI 0.26 to 0.99, P = 0.046). Conclusion: Long-term use of AST-120 has potential for renal protection, especially in diabetic patients, as well as cardiovascular benefits. Reduction of the serum indoxyl sulfate level may be used to identify patients who would benefit from AST-120 administration.

This study was performed to establish an effective extraction method of pig placenta extract that could be used for a putative functional food supplement with immunomodulatory effects. In the present study, we used different temperatures (4, 37, 60, 80, and 100oC) and different solvents (chloroform, NaOH, and phosphate buffered saline [PBS]) to extract the pig placenta. Among the different placenta extracts yielded by the different extraction methods, placenta extract (PE) in PBS at 80oC for 30 min (referred to as PE-PBS80) showed a significant increase of nitric oxide production of up to 22.97 μM/105 cells at a 1 mg/mL dose (p

New two metal complexes, di-(Phenyl dipyrrylmethene)zinc (Zn(PPM)2) and di-(Pentafluorophenyl dipyrrylmethene)zinc (Zn(PFPPM)2) as a host material instead of Alq3 were synthesized. To evaluate electroluminescent properties, multi-layered organic light-emitting devices were fabricated by using 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-tert-buthyl-6-(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) as a dopant and Alq3 as an electron transporting layer. Alq3 and Zn(PPM)2 host EL devices exhibited DCJTB emission peak at around 617 nm due to energy transfer from Alq3 and Zn(PPM)2 to DCJTB. However Zn(PFPPM)2 host device shows no DCJTB emission peak because Zn(PFPPM)2 device emit EL light of 563 and 700 nm. The Zn(PPM)2 device showed same luminance efficiency as Alq3 device, but showed better power efficiency of 1.2 times than Alq3 device.

Klebsiella species are common pathogensthat cause community-onsetand hospital-acquired pneumonia,intra-abdominal infections, andbloodstream infections. Infective endocarditisdue to Klebsiella species israre, accounting for less than 1% ofcases, and is frequently accompaniedby complications and a high in-hospitalmortality rate [1]. Moreover, withthe emergence of extended-spectrumb-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, endocarditis due toESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumonia(ESBL-KP) is of concern due to thelimited treatment options and notoriouslyhigh morbidity and mortality. Hospitalization is a significant riskfactor for bloodstream infections dueto ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, but no cases of health-care-associatednative valve endocarditis causedby ESBL-KP have been reported. Here,we report a case of health-care-associatedinfective endocarditis due toESBL-KP with multiple metastaticinfectious complications, and discussthe optimal treatment strategies.
