Mental and Emotional Exhaustion among Academicians during Online Distance Learning: An Empirical Study from Malaysia

Abdul Kadir OTHMAN(Abdul Kadir OTHMAN ),Jaafar PYEMAN(Jaafar PYEMAN ),Azuati MAHMUD(Azuati MAHMUD ),Siti Nooraini MOHD TOBI(Siti Nooraini MOHD TOBI ),Zahariah SAHUDIN(Zahariah SAHUDIN ) 한국유통과학회 2023 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.10 No.2

The purpose of this study is to discover the possible solutions for the problem faced by academicians during online learning by means of employing qualitative and quantitative approaches. Using a qualitative approach, selected academicians were interviewed, and their feedback was transcribed and used to develop the survey instrument. The quantitative research design was later used to determine the most plausible solutions for the problem that could be obtained and implemented by distributing the questionnaire to academicians at a public university. Multiple regression analysis results indicate that work-life conflict and lack of support are the main contributors to academicians’ mental and emotional health issues. The study’s major findings help higher education institutions craft appropriate strategies to enhance the effectiveness of online teaching and learning by providing the necessary support to the academicians. The study’s findings suggest that academicians should separate work and family requirements to concentrate on their job. Furthermore, the immediate supervisor must be considerate in determining the number of tasks, the deadlines, and the assistance required to complete the task. Lastly, academicians must equip themselves with emotional intelligence to cope with stressors.

A randomized, double-blind study comparing multiple doses of Channa striatus supplementation for knee osteoarthritis

        Abdul Kadir Azidah,Abdul Kadir Arifah,A. H. Roslida,Abdul Manan Mat Jais,Julia Omar,Abdul Nawfar Sadagatullah,Azlina Ishak,Norhayati Mohd. Noor,Ahmad Tarmizi Musa 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2017 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.17 No.4

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of chronic disability at older age. Channa striatus (CS) is a freshwater fish that is traditionally valued for its medicinal properties in promoting wound healing and reducing post-operative pain. This study evaluate the efficacy of different doses of oral Channa striatus extract on primary knee osteoarthritis patients. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 3-arm trial was conducted comparing oral CS extract 1000 mg/day or 500 mg/day and placebo among knee OA patients for a 6-month intervention period. The main outcome measures were Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), analgesic scores and serum cartilage oligomeric matric protein (COMP). Laboratory-based blood tests were used as safety measures. A total of 120 patients were randomized, and 112 patients were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. Significant reductions in WOMAC stiffness and function scores were achieved at month 6 in CS 1000 mg/day and CS 500 mg/day compared to placebo groups (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the groups in terms of analgesic scores, serum COMP and biochemical parameters. No serious adverse events were reported in the study. In conclusion, both doses of CS showed similar efficacy and were more effective than the placebo in treating the symptoms of knee OA.

Organizational Justice, Job Satisfaction and Islamic Spirituality among Malaysian SME Employees

Abdul Halim Bin Abdul MANAF,Mohamed SULAIMAN,Suhaimi Mhd SARIF,Abdul Kadir OTHMAN 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.1

The role of Islamic spirituality in the relationship between organizational justice (OJ) and job satisfaction is investigated in this study (JS). The three components of OJ in this study are distributive, procedural, and interactional justice. Islamic spirituality (IS) is founded on piety values, and IS was used as a moderating factor in this study to alter the link between OJ and JS among Malaysian employees of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Four hundred sets of the questionnaire were issued using a simple random selection procedure, yielding 276 completed responses, suggesting a 69 percent response rate. Multiple Linear Regression Analysis (MLRA) was used to test the proposed relationships. The findings of the study demonstrate that the three OJ aspects have a considerable impact on employee JS, indicating the significance of these elements in ensuring that employees are satisfied with their jobs. IS, on the other hand, had no effect on the link between the OJ dimensions and JS. This research has added to the existing body of knowledge by giving further empirical evidence on the impact of OJ aspects on employee JS in SMEs, notably in Malaysia.

Dual Vector Control Strategy for a Three-Stage Hybrid Cascaded Multilevel Inverter

Kadir, Mohamad N. Abdul,Mekhilef, Saad,Ping, Hew Wooi The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2010 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.10 No.2

This paper presents a voltage control algorithm for a hybrid multilevel inverter based on a staged-perception of the inverter voltage vector diagram. The algorithm is applied to control a three-stage eighteen-level hybrid inverter, which has been designed with a maximum number of symmetrical levels. The inverter has a two-level main stage built using a conventional six-switch inverter and medium- and low- voltage three-level stages constructed using cascaded H-bridge cells. The distinctive feature of the proposed algorithm is its ability to avoid the undesirable high switching frequency for high- and medium- voltage stages despite the fact that the inverter's dc sources voltages are selected to maximize the number of levels by state redundancy elimination. The high- and medium- voltage stages switching algorithms have been developed to assure fundamental switching frequency operation of the high voltage stage and not more than few times this frequency for the medium voltage stage. The low voltage stage is controlled using a SVPWM to achieve the reference voltage vector exactly and to set the order of the dominant harmonics. The inverter has been constructed and the control algorithm has been implemented. Test results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the desired features and all of the major hypotheses have been verified.

Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls with Single Band of Octagonal Openings

Abdul Kadir Marsono,Somaieh Hatami 대한토목학회 2016 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.20 No.5

The applications of cast-in-situ reinforced concrete shear walls for tall buildings are prevalent in many countries. Shear walls with openings are called coupled shear walls which act as cantilevered walls joined by coupling beams. Openings for windows and doors affect the behaviour of the structure and cause to decrease the strength of shear wall. Some methods were suggested in the past to increase the strength of shear wall but they are not easy to apply and need labour attentiveness. This study proposes adding haunches to the corners of rectangular openings as a simple method to increase the strength of coupled shear wall structures. Analytical analysis employing Total Moment Concept and Continuous Connection Method (CCM) and Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA) were carried out on symmetrical shear walls with single band of octagonal openings. The results are compared with outputs of previous study on shear wall with rectangular openings. The analysis results demonstrated that it is confidently worth to use the octagonal openings due to very small percentage increase in the total weight of the structure compared with the amount increase in ultimate load of the shear walls.

        Kadir, Mohammad Abdul,Kim, Su Jeong,Ha, Eun‐,Ju,Cho, Hong Y.,Kim, Bong‐,Soo,Choi, Donghyeuk,Lee, Sun‐,Gu,Kim, Bog G.,Kim, Sang‐,Wook,Paik, Hyun‐,jong WILEY‐VCH Verlag 2012 Advanced functional materials Vol.22 No.19

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The use of nitrilotriacetic acid end‐functionalized polystyrenes (NTA‐PS) as a multifunctional nanocarrier for the aqueous dispersion of CdSe, <I>γ</I>‐Fe2O3 and gold nanoparticles (NPs) is described. When the amphiphilic end‐ functionalized polystyrenes and NPs are dissolved together in tetrahydrofuran, the addition of water causes the spontaneous formation of micellar aggregates, resulting in the successful encapsulation and aqueous dispersion of NPs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) are used to characterize the structure and properties of the NPs‐containing micellar aggregates (nanocarrier). After complexation of Ni2+ with NTA on the surface of the nanocarrier containing <I>γ</I>‐Fe2O3, specific binding between Ni‐NTA complex and histidine‐tagged (His‐tagged) proteins enables selective separation of His‐tagged proteins using a magnet.</P>

What influences Indonesian medical educators’ intentions to teach public health? A qualitative study

Kadir Nurhira Abdul,Schütze Heike,Weston Kathryn Mary 한국의학교육학회 2023 Korean journal of medical education Vol.35 No.4

Purpose: Medical educators are central in ensuring future doctors have sufficient public health skills. Attitudes, norms, and perceived control about the significance of teaching a subject determines whether or not it is taught and how well. This qualitative study aims to explore medical educators’ perceptions about what factors influence their intention to teach public health in Indonesian undergraduate medical schools. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eighteen medical educators from different Indonesian medical schools. Interviews were analyzed thematically using the Theory of Planned Behavior domains: attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Results: Five subthemes emerged under these domains: attitudes (defining public health); subjective norms (room in the medical curricula; teaching and assessment); and perceived behaviour control (medical educator confidence; institutional support). Most participants had a limited understanding about the scope of public health. This coupled with an already overcrowded medical curriculum made it challenging for them to incorporate public health into the medical curriculum dominated by clinical and biomedical content. Although believing that public health is important, medical educators were reluctant to incorporate public health because they were not confident incorporating or assessing content. Conclusion: Strong institutional support is to improve public health quality and content in the medical curriculum. Including public health educators in discussions is critical.

      • Adherence to Capecitabine Treatment and Contributing Factors among Cancer Patients in Malaysia

Zahrina, Abdul Kadir,Norsa'adah, Bachok,Hassan, Norul Badriah,Norazwany, Yaacob,Norhayati, Md Isa,Roslan, Mohd Haron,Wan Nazuha, Wan Rusik Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.21

Ensuring adherence to chemotherapy is important to prevent disease progression, prolong survival and sustain good quality of life. Capecitabine is a complex chemotherapeutic agent with many side effects that might affect patient adherence to treatment. This cross sectional study aimed to determine adherence to capecitabine and its contributing factors among cancer outpatients in Malaysia. One hundred and thirteen patients on single regime capecitabine were recruited from Hospital Sultan Ismail and Hospital Kuala Lumpur from October 2013 to March 2014. Adherence was determined based on adherence score using validated Medication Compliance Questionnaire. Patient socio-demographics, disease, and treatment characteristics were obtained from medical records. Satisfaction score was measured using the validated Patient Satisfaction with Healthcare questionnaire. The mean adherence score was 96.1% (standard deviation: 3.29%). The significant contributing factors of adherence to capecitabine were Malay ethnicity [${\beta}=1.3$; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21, 2.43; p value=0.020], being female [${\beta}=1.8$; 95%CI: 0.61, 2.99; p value=0.003]), satisfaction score [${\beta}=0.08$; 95%CI: 0.06, 1.46; p value=0.035], presence of nausea or vomiting [${\beta}=2.3$; 95%CI: 1.12, 3.48; p value <0.001] and other side effects [${\beta}=1.45$; 95%CI: 0.24, 2.65; p value=0.019]. Adherence to capecitabine was generally high in our local population. Attention should be given to non-Malay males and patients having nausea, vomiting or other side effects. Sufficient information, proactive assessment and appropriate management of side effects would improve patient satisfaction and thus create motivation to adhere to treatment plans.
