        ZnSe Hybrid Microcavities Fabricated Using a MgS Release Layer: Strong & Weak Exciton-Photon Coupling

        We report the observation of strong and weak exciton-photon coupling in a variety of ZnSe-based microcavities fabricated using epitaxial liftoff. Molecular-beam-epitaxy grown ZnSe/Zn0.9Cd0.1Se quantum wells with a one-wavelength optical length at the exciton emission were transferred to a SiO2/Ta2O5 mirror with a reflectance of 96 %. Three experiments are presented, evidencing strong exciton-photon coupling in both a fixed and tunable microcavity and lasing at room temperature in a monolithic device.         Inhibition of Neurogenic Inflammatory Pathways Associated with the Reduction in Discogenic Back Pain

        Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether the initiation of anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP inhibitor) medication therapy for migraines was also associated with improvements in back/neck pain, mobility, and function in a patient population with comorbid degenerative spinal disease and migraine.Overview of Literature: CGRP upregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and nerve growth factor in spinal spondylotic disease, which results in disc degeneration and sensitization of nociceptive neurons. Although CGRP inhibitors can quell neurogenic inflammation in migraines, their off-site efficacy as a therapeutic target for discogenic back/neck pain conditions remains unknown.Methods: All adult patients diagnosed with spinal spondylosis and migraine treated with CGRP inhibitors at a single academic institution between 2017 and 2020 were retrospectively identified. Patient demographic and medical data, follow-up duration, migraine severity and frequency, spinal pain, functional status, and mobility before and after the administration of CGRP inhibitors were collected. Paired univariate analysis was conducted to determine significant changes in spinal pain, headache severity, and headache frequency before and after the administration of CGRP inhibitors. The correlation between changes in the spinal pain score and functional or mobility improvement was assessed with Spearman’s rho.Results: In total, 56 patients were included. The mean follow-up time after the administration of CGRP inhibitors was 123 days for spinal pain visits and 129 days for migraine visits. Back/neck pain decreased significantly (<i>p</i> <0.001) from 6.30 to 4.36 after starting CGRP inhibitor therapy for migraine control. As recorded in the spine follow-up notes, 25% of patients experienced a functional improvement in the activities of daily living, and 17.5% experienced mobility improvement while taking CGRP inhibitors. Change in back/ neck pain moderately correlated (ρ=−0.430) with functional improvement but was not correlated with mobility improvement (ρ=−0.052).Conclusions: Patients taking CGRP inhibitors for chronic migraines with comorbid degenerative spinal conditions experienced significant off-target reduction of back/neck pain.

        Growth and Characterization of ZnMgS and ZnMgS/ZnSe Quantum Wells grown on GaAs (100) by Using MBE

        Structures containing Zn1-xMgxS have been grown lattice matched to GaAs by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with ZnS as the source of S. The composition of the alloy produced has been determined using double-crystal X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray interference measurements. Both techniques indicate that 0.88 ≤ x ≤ 0.93. This result is conrmed by both secondary ion mass spectroscopy and an Auger analysis carried out on the material. These results show that the crystalline quality of the material produced is excellent and that it has been grown coherently to the GaAs substrate. Photoluminescence spectroscopy shows a high intensity emission with a narrow full width half maximum, confirming the suitability of this alloy as a high-bandgap barrier material.         SELECTION FOR PROLIFICACY IN ROMNEY SHEEP II. CORRELATED RESPONSES

        A selection experiment with Romney Marsh sheep was used to evaluate correlated responses to selection. The selected flock was formed in 1979 by the Romney Group Breeders where selection was for prolificacy, defined as the number of live lambs born per ewe joined per year and a randomly selected control flock was established in 1982. Selection for prolificacy resulted in (i) increased ewe fertility, (ii) increased ewe ovulation rate, (iii) increased ewe litter size, (iv) decreased ewe body weight, (v) decreased lamb birth weight and (vi) decreased lamb 8-week weight. The rates of correlated responses per year respectively for ewe fertility, ewe ovulation rate, ewe litter size, ewe body weight, lamb birth weight and lamb 8-week weight were 0.033(0.002), 0.043(0.016), 0.019(0.005), -0.017(0.066), -0.055(0.025) and -0.150(0.057).

        SELECTION FOR PROLIFICACY IN ROMNEY SHEEP I. DIRECT RESPONSE TO SELECTION

        A selection experiment with Romney Marsh sheep was used to evaluate direct responses to selection. Two flocks were maintained; a) the selection line formed in 1979 by the Romney Group Breeders to select for high prolificacy, defined as the number of live lambs born per ewe joined per year and b) a control line, established in 1982, where flock replacements were chosen at random. Predicted responses per year of birth female group and per year respectively were 0.033 and 0.027 live lambs. The rate of predicted response per year was within the theoretical expected range from 0.01 to 0.03 of the mean. The rates of realized response in prolificacy per year of birth female group and per year respectively were 0.026 and 0.021. These estimates of realized responses represented between 0.01 and 0.02 of the control line mean per year.

        EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON BODY WEIGHT AT DIFFERENT AGES IN THE ROMNEY MARSH SHEEP

        Data on the birth weight, 8 week body weight and ewe body weight of an unselected random mating Romney Marsh sheep flock are analyzed to study the influence of various environmental factors. The average birth weight of lambs was 5.06 kg. Sex of lamb, birth type and dam age contributed significant variation in lamb birth weight (p < 0.05). Males were significantly heavier than females (p < 0.05) and singles were significantly heavier than multiples (p < 0.05) at birth. Birth weight of lamb increased with the progress of dams' age. The overall average 8 week body weight of lambs was 20.84 kg. Effect of birth weight, sex, birth type and dam age was significant on 8 week body weight of lamb. Eight week body weight increased with the increase of lamb birth weight (b=1.285 kg). Ewes' body weight taken before tupping was affected by ewes' age, year of performance and their weight at birth. It was concluded that performance data on lamb birth weight, 8 week body weight and ewe body weight should be corrected for the above relevantly significant environmental factors in any genetic calculation in the United Kingdom Romney March sheep.

        <P>Detailed measurements of the 2D mode structure of Alfvén instabilities in the current ramp-up phase of neutral beam heated discharges were performed on ASDEX Upgrade, using the electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) diagnostic. This paper focuses on the observation of reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes (RSAEs) and bursting modes that, with the use of the information from ECEI, have been identified as beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs). Both RSAEs with first and second radial harmonic mode structures were observed. Calculations with the linear gyro-kinetic code LIGKA revealed that the ratio of the damping rates and the frequency difference between the first and second harmonic modes strongly depended on the shape of the <I>q</I>-profile. The bursting character of the BAE type modes, which were radially localized to rational <I>q</I> surfaces, was observed to sensitively depend on the plasma parameters, ranging from strongly bursting to almost steady state.</P>

        MBE Growth and Characterization of MgS-Rich Zinc-Blende ZnxMg1−xS1−ySey Alloys

        Samples containing ZnMgSSe alloy were grown by using molecular beam epitaxy at 240 ℃ and were analyzed by using X-ray interference. The alloy composition was found to be Zn0.20Mg0.80S0.64Se0.36. The surfaces of these layers were found to be extremely flat, unlike MgS layers of similar thickness grown under identical conditions, which show pronounced ridges. Structures with Zn0.20Mg0.80S0.64Se0.36 barriers were grown with ZnSe quantum wells and showed good quantum confinement with a sharp PL peak. Calculations of the phase stability of ZnMgSSe alloys suggest that an alloy of this composition should phase separate. However, samples with this composition are demonstrably single phase, and the discrepancy with the calculation can be removed if the enthalpy of formation of zinc-blende MgS is reduced by less than 2 % to −231 kJ mol−1.
