Vol.15 No.2

This paper explores the process and implications of sexuation and achieving gender identity from a psychoanalytic perspective, particularly by viewing them as a way of assimilating socialized fantasies and desire. Sexual difference as such is a Lacanian real that is beyond the grasp of any symbolic representation or explication. The discourse on sexual difference, gender roles or gender identity is a way of coping with the real and organizing the desire and jouissance of the subject on the basis of the phallic logic, which compels the subject to accept the symbolic castration and disguise or fill in the primordial lack in being by objectifying others. Socialized fantasies and desire, as an artifact produced to provide a definitive answer to an enigmatic question that should remain open-ended, play a key role in this process of sexuation where the subject is interpellated by and inscribed in a system of the socially codified sexual differences and gender-specific roles or expectations. As Lacan's diagram of sexuation illustrates, gender identity thus "achieved" via different ways of positioning oneself in relation to the phallic signifier entails the impossibility of the sexual relation. Recognizing the lack in the Other of the social symbolic that dictates this constrictive and coercive process of sexuation paves way for the possibility of what Jacques Lacan calls the traversing of fantasy and moving beyond the deadlock of non-relation between sexes.

The "Primal Scene" of Immigration and the Interstitial Plight of the Asian American Subject

Vol.- No.92

Examining the immigration of ethnic minority subjects in the American context, this paper aims to critically intervene in the conservative, ideological management of immigration by the American nation-state, which repetitively evokes the reified "otherness" of immigrant minority subjects while surreptitiously using them to obtain its political leverage in maintaining and reinforcing the already established social order. Employing several key concepts, such as the "primal scene" of immigration and the "interstitial ethnic subject," this study analyzes and exposes the hidden, manipulative ideological base and orientation of American national discourse, which is predicated upon constant but ever untenable practices of policing "others within." “The primal scene of immigration” in this paper refers to a fabricated historical myth and the discursively manipulated rhetoric about the “birth” of the Asian American minority subject in America. Drawn from Freud's notion of the primal scene and applied to the case of immigration, the term "primal scene" explicates the psycho-political repercussion of immigration in general and its long-term effects on the descendants of Asian immigrants in particular. In the discourse of both the primal scene and immigration, there is the common recurrent focus on the alleged “origin.” Thus, a careful analysis of the "interstitial" plight of Asian Americans who are repeatedly thrust back to the threshold of admittance to the U. S. nation state highlights the need for a critical intervention in the trauma-inducing American discourse and politics about immigration, ethnicity, and nationality. Race, Trauma, and Narrative in Morrison's The Bluest Eye

Vol.52 No.5

Destroying the basic organizing principles by which we construct meaningful narratives about ourselves, others, and the external world, traumatic events cause a serious upheaval and render helpless the narrative-building function of the self. This paper aims to explore the impact of psychological trauma on selfhood, particularly on its ability of assimilation and symbolization, by focusing on the issues of social oppression and power dynamics portrayed in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. Morrison bears witness to the unclaimed and suppressed history of African-Americans, by breaking the silence and confronting the evasion and elision that have dominated the American literary scene in race matters. Thus, Pecola’s incestuous rape by her father Cholly Breedlove, the major tragic incident of the novel, should be read against the backdrop of the debilitating trauma which both her parents and she have to face in a racist society. In conjunction with other social factors such as gender, class, and age, racism in The Bluest Eye determines the form of intergenerationally transmitted trauma, producing synergistic effects of multiple marginalization. For the Breedloves who have internalized racially inflected feelings of inferiority and developed highly deformed object relations with each other, their denigrated race fails to provide them with what Heinz Kohut might call “mirroring” and “idealizing selfobject” functions necessary for developing a healthy, cohesive sense of self. Due to a sustained and persistent exposure to various forms of traumatogenic socio-political oppression, each of the Pecola’s family constructs fragmented and dissociated narratives of self-loathing. As the pivotal scene of Pecola’s rape and her subsequent schizophrenic dissociation illustrate, traumatic events and memories, as the unsymbolized real, remain unassimilated and disrupts the narrative of the self. In depicting the lack of empathic witnessing for Pecola and the black community’s scapegoating of her, Morrison’s novel underscores the important narrative function of testimony and defiance, which is necessary for the traumatized victim to claim and restitute his or her self. Thus, Morrison, on a textual level, creates a space for testimony and empathic listening for the pains and ordeals of African-Americans driven to the status of the disempowered by a white supremacist society.

Vol.52 No.-

A study of Shilla roof-end tiles found in the basin of Han river is not enough. The purpose of this study is that I want to know the feature and character of Shilla roof-end tiles made in the basin of Han river centering aroud round roof-end tiles found in some fortresses, temple site and building site. The pattern of round roof-end tiles is various. Among those, a pattern of a Lotus comprises the largest part and we could find a pattern of a pair of birds, a pattern of a Dragon mask, a pattern of a pinwheel etc. Especially the kind of a pattern of a Lotus is classified under 8 forms and the other forms are 4. Lotus round roof-end tiles had classic form of Shilla, but it was effected by Gogurye, Backje. And I could confirm roof-end tiles motivated by Gogurye’s roof-end tiles,Backje’s roof-end tiles. Also, roof-end tiles found in castles was the symbol for ceremonial occasions rather than actually using in the building site. And in the temple site, mostly we could find Shilla’s roof-end tiles, Backje’s roof-end tiles. It means that Gogurye had the shortest time in which it controled the basin of Han river. It was supported by the fact, that we could find Gogurye’ roof-end tiles in the city occupied by Gogurye, and the fortress near fort. In the building site, the a pattern of a Lotus or a pattern of a pair of birds roof-end tiles of classic Shilla form was found so they helped to study the form making in the other region at that time. As a result Shilla’s roof-end tiles found in the basin of Han river until now were excavated centering around the fortress, the temple site and the building site. The time of making it was after the middle of 6 century. Roof-end tiles of Shilla’s type which was reflected in the historical distinct characteristics of the basin of Han river were mostly made but there were roof-end tiles motivated by Gogurye, Backje’s form. And there were similar roof-end tiles to Gogurye, Backje’s form.

Vol.2016 No.10

This paper deals with block shear fracture behavior in base metal of carbon steel welded connection. Monotonic tensile experiments have been conducted to investigate the structural behaviors of carbon steel fillet-welded connection with the block shear fracture in base metal. Main parameters are weld lengths in the longitudinal and transverse directions of applied force. Finite element analysis in this paper focused on the ultimate strength and fracture mode of welded connections. It was shown that predictions by finite element analysis method were in a good correspondence with test results for ultimate behaviors such as fracture mode and ultimate strength.
