Large eddy simulation has been applied in order to analyze the flow instability caused by unsteady flow structure in solid rocket motors, Two motors of a cylinder- 3 slots type grains (one has the cylinder length same as the acoustic longitudinal node length but the other has not same) were concerned to perform quantitative comparison of oscillatory pressure amplitude and frequencies. The gain not same as the acoustic node length diminishes the pressure oscillations observed in the other case and the tangential mode is dominant one. The coherent vortex generating at the expansion area from cylinder to slot is the major source to produce the pressure oscillated continuously in the slotted region.

Combustion instability prediction poses an obvious threat to the structural stability and performance of the motor. Elevated pressures modify the burning rate, local surface mean flow Mach number, and the apparent response function of the propellant. This phenomenon generates when acoutic mode was coupled with frequency that occurs in the combustion/flow process. In this paper, for analysis acoustic phenomenon in solid rocket motors, a nonlinear acoustic instability model which is derived from the nonlinear wave equation and is combined with the linear acoustic instability model applied to internal ballistics. The influence was concerned with combustor configuration, chamber pressure and burning rate by using this analysis method. Finally, the stability of the solid rocket motor with extending into slot was determined to perform the one-dimensional internal ballistics that was considered with erosive burning and linear/nonlinear acoustic instability analysis.

A compact hydrogen generation device of fuel cell system using chemical hydride storage technique was designed to fit the propulsion device requirement of a small unmanned aerial vehicle(SUAV). For high efficient, compact, and lightweight hydrogen generation control device, the Co-B catalyst hydrogen conversion rate by NaBH4 aqueous solution flux is measured so that the proper amount of Co-B catalyst for maximum hydrogen generation of 100W stack was proposed. A compact hydrogen generation device is controlled by pumps on/off using its own internal pressure and consumes fuel in high efficiency through a dead-end type fuel cell. The fuel cell system has stable operation for a planed flight profile. The system operates up to maximum 7 hours and at least 4 hours for tough flight profiles.

Detail flow structures in a solid rocket motor with two inhibitors havev been investigated using a 3D Dynamic Large Eddy Simulation. The oscillation frequencies from two inhibitors compare reasonably well with the experimental data. And the locations of the rear inhibitor have been numerically tested to find the location agitating pressure oscillation in the chamber. Vortex shedding frequencies periodically occurred by inhibitors are coupled with flow acoustics induced by the impinging of vorticity on nozzle head. The major source of triggering pressure oscillation in the combustor is the resonance with the acoustic longitudinal half mode. It was observed that the counter rotating vortices in the nozzle flow produce roll torque.

Detail flow structure in a large solid rocket motor with two inhibitors has been investigated using 3D Large Eddy Simulation and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD) analysis. Vortex shedding frequencies periodically occurred by inhibitors are coupled with flow acoustics induced by the impinging of vorticity on nozzle head. As a result of 3D analysis, it was observed that the nozzle exit flow causes roll-torques from the vortex being decomposed in unbalanced shape for the impinging of vorticity on the nozzle head.
