Its Present State and Problems
Vol.27 No.-
Academic interest, study and research about the Middle Eastern countries, began to develop only from 1965, with the establishment of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies(HUFS) in Seoul. The political development since 1973 (the New Foreign Policy of ‘Open Door’ by abandoning the Hallstein Doctrine) have given great impetus to the promotion of interests and the expansion in the Middle Eastern studies in South Korea. Educational and research centers have been established by universities and private groups in Korea. They have produced a variety of scholarly research in the field. In this respect, several characteristics about the Korean educational and research system in the Middle Eastern field will be outlined. It will also examine. What recent state (added since 200) in the Korean academic society means.

This paper seeks to present the politics of the region with its complex heritage and endemic circumstance. These are not organized on a country by country basis. Rather a systematic outline has been adopted. Government is not, however, the sole concern of comparative politics; for it is only a part of the political system as a whole, which includes, in addition to government, such informal or unofficial factors as the society's historical heritage and geographic and resource endowments, its social and economic organization, its ideologies and value systems, and its political style; and its party, interest, and leadership structure. Government, plus these two categories of related and mutually affective factors, thus constitutes the political system of a society. Within this context, both broad regional similarities and the variations that occur in individual political systems are taken up. From the result, it will be tried to find what solutions are for developing the Middle Eastern studies in Korea.
Its Trend and Prospective
Vol.4 No.1
In the history of Korea-Arab relations a significant change and turning point was made by "the New Middle East Policy" of Korea, on December 15, 1973, and it is a landmark in the development of the Korea-Arab relations. These political shifts since 1973 have given great impetus to the promotion of interests and the expansion in the Middle Eastern studies in Korea. Numerous educational and research centers have been established by universities and private groups in Korea, and they have produced a variety of scholarly research in the field. In this respect, the paper outlines several characteristics about the Korean educational and research system in the field of Arab studies, and then it examines what the recent trend in the Korean academic community indicates. From the result, it will be tried to find what solutions are for developing the Middle Eastern studies in Korea.
The Trends of MA & PHD Theses Research
Vol.14 No.1
The intention of the study was to examine Korean Arab and Middle East research trends by referring to MA & PHD theses from 1978 to the half of 1994. I was therefore concerned more with what Middle East Specialists were doing. I was also concerned with tile diffusion of scholarship and the encouragement of cumulative research. I hoped to provide solute intellectual justification for the selection of research topics. For the analysis I mainly consulted the Data Base of MA & PHD theses which the National Assembly Library furnishes. The total numbers of degree theses mounts up to 333 (314 MA and 19 PHD theses). Many graphs and tables which appeared in the study were produced by using a MS Works v. 3. According to the study, the scope and the depth of the researches was gradually expanded, and at the same time academic interests became to be diversified within the areas of Arab and the Middle East studies. However, the analysis showed that scholars'(students') interest on Arab and the Middle East somewhat concentrated in the area of social sciences rather than the other areas. It also indicated that the proportion of theses submitters who belong to the Korean Association of the Middle East Studies to the others has decreased gradually.
