In order to estimate a better methodological factor to understand phytoplankton ecology between abundance and bio volume of phytoplankton, each 1,160 phytoplankton data, including abundance, classification and chlorophyll a concentration were collected in Korean coastal waters of Incheon (Yellow sea), Tongyeong (South sea), and Ulsan (East sea). Based on these data, phytoplankton bio volume can be calculated through a geometric model. The correlation coefficient between abundance and chlorophyll a concentration was higher than the coefficient between biovolume and chlorophyll a concentration, because a small size phytoplankton has relatively dense chlorophyll contents compared with the proportion of chlorophyll in a large size phytoplankton. Thus, the interpretation using abundance to understand phytoplankton ecology in Korean coastal waters may be more effective than that using bio volume.
남극 호냉성 미세조 Porosira pseudodenticulata의 형태와 분자적 자료

We have cultured more than 100 Arctic and Antarctic cryophilic microalgal strains in KOPRI culture collections of polar microorganisms (KCCPM). Among them, we tried to identify an Antarctic strain, KOPRI AnM0008 by morphological and molecular analysis. Nuclear SSU rDNA and plastid rbcL sequences were used to identify the strain. It was identified as Porosira pseudodenticulata based on SSU sequence data showing 99% identity with GenBank X85398. This result was supported by morphological features like solitary labiate process, external foramina and internal cribra by optical and scanning electron microscope. Morphological identification and molecular analysis on polar cryophilic microalgae will be accomplished to construct the databases for KCCPM.

최근 국제적으로 환경 및 기후변화 대응, 자원개발, 북극항로개척 등 남/북극을 통합한 양극해의 중요성이 대두되어 연구가 가속화되고 있다. 양극해 진출과 국제적 위상제고를 위하여 극지연구소에서는 2010년부터 쇄빙연구선“아라온”호를 이용하여 현장연구를 수행하였고 이를 통해 다양한 종류의 극지 해양 관측 자료를 획득하여 양극해 연구를 수행하고 있다. 더 나아가 양극 해양환경웹GIS 서비스 개발을 통해 양극해에서 획득한 해양 환경정보에 대한 GIS 데이터베이스를 구축하고, 본 시스템을 통해 연구 자료의 수집, 현장관측 자료의 표준화, 연구 자료의 가시화와 공간정보도 제작 등의 기능을 구현하여 제공하고 있다. 이를 통해 극지 해양 관측 자료의 접근성을 높여 국내 연구진뿐만 아니라 전 세계 극지 해양 연구자들 간의 정보 공유를 기대할 수 있는 창구를 마련하여 극지 해양연구의 질적, 양적 성장을 기대하고 있다. In recent years, polar research has been focused on climate change, natural resources, and development of a new North Pole Route. Since 2010, the Korea Polar Research Institute has been collecting various in situ data from the Arctic/Antarctic oceans using ARAON, which is the first effort of Korea toward leading global polar research. As a part of these activities, a web-based GIS service was developed to collect in situ data and to standardize data formats. Visualizations of in situ measurements and thematic maps were also developed to improve both the quantitative and qualitative quality of polar ocean research, and to increase accessibility of polar oceanographic data. This system will ultimately share all of the data acquired from the Arctic/Antarctic oceans with international research groups.
