The confining effect of concrete was studied when a steel tube is set at the inside face of a hollow reinforced concrete column. To investigate the confining effect by a steel tube, 36 specimens were tested and compared. Test results show that the inserted steel tube provide sufficient confinement to the confining effect depends on the thickness of the steel tube. And also, test results show that the provided confinement by a steel tube increase the strength of concrete.

When the weight if a concrete member makes problems, or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C column may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C column. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C column by a steel tube was developed before. In this study, a hollow R.C column is internally confined by a corrugated steel tube instead of a general flat steel tube. And a column ductility is performed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C column by a by a corrugated steel tube corresponds to 80% of the energy ductility ratio of a general solid R.C column.

In this paper a design of a large shield Tunnel through weathered soil and weathered rock in 703 section of seoul subway line No.7 extension project is presented. The geological investigation results show that the project region consists mostly of weathered soil with some local weathered rock in the tunnel excavation level. A EPB shield TBM is selected as a optimal excavation machine for the large shield Tunnel considering the geological and site conditions. Also, the shield machine head and cutter for the large shield tunnel type are designed considering site geological conditions and average advance rate in similar projects.

Urban conditions such as underground facilities and ambient noises due to cultural activity restrict the application of conventional geophysical techniques in general. We used the linear array microtremor technique which uses these noises as strong energy source. The result parameter of the survey is shear wave velocity profile which had been applied as an fundamental information for the determination of the rock support type in tunnel design. This study was the first case in Korea which utilized a surface geophysical technique yielding successful result in urban area especially under the existing rail ways. The quantitative relation between the shear wave velocity from this method and the rock mass rating(RMR) determined from the inspection of the cores recovered from the same boreholes showed high statistical relationship. These correlations were then used to relate the shear-wave velocity to RMR along the entire profile.
