The purpose of this study was to understand the main concepts of cognitive linguistics, to search for how collocations are expanded with their meanings in the aspects of metaphor theory and to propose some suggestions for English instructors and students to apply the cognitive linguistics principles to some other collocation pairs. This study suggests the applicable cognitive-semantic principles to various collocate pairs through the results of the findings. In order to achieve the goal of this study, the following study questions were constructed by researching cognitive linguistics, metaphor theory, conceptual metaphor and the theories of collocations. The relationship of conceptual metaphor and collocations is also researched. The findings of data analysis showed how the collocations representing positive condition or state are formed and expanded by metaphor, a new approach for teaching metaphor through the examples representing positive condition or state, and the applicable cognitive-semantic principles to some other collocation pairs. Lastly, instructional implications for the classroom and suggestions for further study were also discussed.
