Vol.57 No.1

This study evaluated the utilization of a low fish meal (LFM) diet and black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens meal and oil as a fish meal (FM) substitute or functional additive for juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus at the Jeju fish farm. Two experimental diets replaced FM using animal (tankage, poultry byproduct and tuna byproduct meal) and plant (wheat gluten and soy protein concentrate) protein sources, containing 45% (FM45) and 35% (FM35) of FM, respectively. One experimental diet replaced FM with animal, plant, and BSF meal, fish oil using insect meal and oil (FM35+). After the feeding trial ended, no differences in growth performance, feed utilization, survival and biological indices were observed among all experimental groups. Aspartate aminotransferase and cholesterol levels in the FM35 and FM35+ groups were significantly higher than that in the FM70 group. The linoleic acid level in the muscle was significantly higher in the fish fed with the FM70 diet than in those fed with the FM45, FM35, and FM35+ diets. Thus, the LFM diet is suitable for juvenile olive flounder farming during six months.

Vol.53 No.3

This study was conducted to replace fish meal (FM) with three plant proteins (soybean meal, soy protein concentrate, and wheat gluten) in diets for growing olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The control diet was formulated to contain65% sardine FM and four other replacement diets were formulated to replace FM with the plant proteins by 25,30, 35 and 40% (designated FM25, FM30, FM35 and FM40, respectively). The replacement diets were added withthree essential amino acids (lysine, methionine and threonine) to meet their requirements for the fish. Olive flounder(initial average weight, 96.8±0.2 g) were randomly distributed into 20 tanks (425 L each) at a density of 25 fish pertank. Four replicate groups of fish were fed one of the diets two times daily for 15 weeks. At the end of the feedingtrial, no significant differences were found among all the fish groups in growth performance, feed utilization, nonspecificimmune responses and hematological health parameters. Thus, this result indicates that the plant proteinswith the three limiting amino acids could replace FM up to 40% in diets for growing olive flounder.

Vol.53 No.4

This study was conducted to investigate the replacement of fish meal (FM) with a plant and animal protein mixture (wheat gluten, soy protein concentrate, tankage meal and poultry by-product meal) in the diets of juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The basal diet was formulated to contain 65% FM (Con). Four other experimental diets were formulated with alternative proteins replacing 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of FM (FM20, FM30, FM40 and FM50, respectively). Taurine and betaine were added to the FM replacement diets. Triplicate groups of fish (mean±SD, 5.41±0.01) were fed the diets to apparent satiation for 15 weeks. After the feeding trial, no significant differences were found between any dietary groups in growth performance, feed utilization, survival, hematological parameters or whole-body composition. This result indicates that a proper mixture of the four protein sources with taurine and betaine supplements can be used as FM replacement to reduce FM levels from 65% to 32.5% in juvenile olive flounder diets.

Vol.56 No.3

This study aimed to evaluate the utilization of low fish meal (LFM) diet and black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens meal supplementation in LFM diet as a fish meal (FM) replacer or functional additive for juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Three LFM diets were prepared to contain 30, 25, and 20% FM, respectively (designated as F30, F25, and F20). Three BSF diets were prepared by adding 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0% BSF in the LFM diets, respectively (designated as F30B2.0, F25B2.5, and F20B3.0). A total of 540 fish (initial mean body weight: 22.3±0.01g) were randomly distributed into 18 tanks (240 L) in triplicate groups and fed the experimental diets twice daily for 12 weeks. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the growth performance, feed utilization and survival among all the groups. Lysozyme activity significantly increased in F30B2.0 and F25B2.5 groups compared to their respective LFM groups. Total immunoglobulin was significantly higher in F30 group than in F20 group. Antiprotease and myeloperoxidase activities were significantly higher in F30B2.0 group than in F20 group. Innate immunity gradually decreased with decreasing FM level in all the groups. BSF supplementation significantly improved immunity compared to their respective LFM diets. Therefore, BSF could be used as an immuno-stimulant supplement in LFM diets for P. olivaceus.

Vol.45 No.-

This study aimed to evaluate how fish meal (FM) replacement in diets with a mixture of animal and plant protein sources affect growth performance, feed utilization, hematological parameters and innate immunity of red seabream Pagrus major. A control FM diet was formulated to contain 65% FM (Con). Two other diets were prepared replacing FM in the control diet with a mixture of protein sources (wheat gluten, soy-protein concentrate, tankage meal, and poultry by-product meal) by 30 and 40% (FM30 and FM40, respectively). Total 300 red seabream (body weight, 77.6±0.3g) were distributed to 12 tanks (300 L) in 4 replicates per diet. The fish were fed the diets to apparent satiation for 19 weeks. After the feeding trial, no significant differences could be observed in growth performance, feed utilization, hematological parameters, innate immunity, and survivals among all the dietary treatments. This longterm feeding trial at low water temperature (13.8-17.5°C) indicates that a proper mixture ratio of wheat gluten, soy protein concentrate, tankage meal, and poultry by-product meal can replace FM up to 40% in red seabream diets.

Vol.44 No.-

We evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation of phytosterol on the growth, feed utilization, immunity, digestibility, wound healing ability and disease resistance of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. We conducted two consecutive feeding trials at different growth stages of the fish: EXP-1 (68.9 g) and EXP-2 (16.5 g). The experimental diets were supplemented with graded levels of phytosterol (1% ecdysteroid extracted from Achyranthis radix) at 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4% (designated as Con, PHY0.025, PHY0.05, PHY0.1, PHY0.2 and PHY0.4, respectively). Dietary phytosterol did not significantly affect growth and cholesterol concentration. Feed utilization was higher in fish fed phytosterol-supplemented diets than in fish fed the control diet. Dietary phytosterol increased innate immunity and digestibility of protein and dry matter. Wound healing ability was also increased by the phytosterol supplementation. The survival against Edwardsiella tarda challenge was higher in fish fed low-phytosterol diets than in fish fed the control diet. The optimum dietary level of phytosterol seems to be approximately 0.05%. The results in this study indicate that the phytosterol could be used as a functional supplement in diets to improve feed utilization, immunity, digestibility and wound healing ability of olive flounder.

The dietary requirement for threonine in juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

2023 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.26 No.1

This study was conducted to determine dietary threonine (Thr) requirement for juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). A total of 450 juvenile fish (23.2 ± 0.4 g) were randomly distributed to 18 tanks (215 L) with 25 fish per tank. Experimental diets included with graded levels of Thr at 0.0%, 0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2%, 1.6%, and 2.0% were assigned for triplicate groups of fish and fed two times daily to apparent satiation for 12 weeks. Weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake, feed utilization and survival were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in fish fed with dietary Thr levels over 0.8%, and no significant differences were observed between 0.8% to 2.3% levels. Non-specific immune parameters of serum lysozyme, myeloperoxidase activity, antiprotease activity, and total immunoglobulin were significantly increased by dietary Thr over 0.8%. Based on the broken-line regression analysis, the Thr requirement for the optimum growth and immune response in olive flounder is likely to be 1.03% in the diet.

Vol.56 No.6

This study aimed to evaluate the effectivity of full-fat black soldier fly Hermetia illucens (BSF) and defatted meal-worm Tenebrio molitor (MW) larvae meal as a fish meal (FM) substitute in a low-fish meal (LFM) diet for juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The LFM diet comprising 45% FM with tankage meal, poultry byproduct meal, soy protein concentrate and wheat gluten was the control diet. Three experimental diets were 10% FM in Con with BSF, MW and a mixture of both at the same ratio (designated as B10, M10 and B5M5, respectively). Four hundred and forty-fourth juvenile P. olivaceus (34.3±0.1 g) were randomly distributed into 12 tanks (425 L) in three replicate groups per treatment and fed the experimental diets for 15 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, growth performance, survival, biological indices (condition factor, viscerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index), non-specific immune re-sponses (lysozyme, myeloperoxidase) and intestinal histology (villi length and goblet cells) were not significantly affected by treatments. Feed utilization was significantly decreased in M10 compared to the control group. Alanine aminotransferase level was significantly higher in M10 than in the control group. Glucose level was significantly lower in B10 than in the control group. These results suggest that BSF and MW can be used as FM substitutes. How-ever, considering feed conversion ratio and AST level, MW availability is thought to be lower than that of BSF, and feeding fish with a diet containing MW for an extended period is thought to adversely affect fish growth.

Vol.45 No.-

The study was conducted to investigate the dietary supplementation of citrus by-product (CBP) and CBP fermented with Bacillus subtilis (BS) or B. pumilus (BP) on growth performance, feed utilization, innate immune responses and disease resistance of Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii. Triplicate groups of juvenile fish (initial weight of 22.9 g) were fed one of five experimental diets which were formulated to replace a synthetic vitamin C (L-ascorbyl- 2-polyphosphate, LAPP) with CBP or fermented CBP. A basal diet without LAPP and CBP was used as the control diet (Con). At the end of the 13 weeks feeding trial, growth performance, feed utilization and survival of fish fed the Con were significantly lower than those of fish fed the LAPP, CBP and fermented CBP diets. Fish fed the Con were significantly lower in lysozyme activity than fish fed LAPP, CBP and fermented CBP diets. In a challenge test against Edwardsiella tarda, cumulative mortality of fish fed LAPP, CBP and fermented CBP diets was significantly lower (20-30%) than that of the Con (60%). The findings in this study indicate that the CBP and/or fermented CBP can be a promising vitamin C source for LAPP replacement in diet for Korean rockfish.
