Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate therelationship between the maximum standardized uptakevalues (SUVmax) of primary renal cancers with and withoutmetastatic lesions, if any. We also studied the relationshipbetween the size of primary renal cancers and their SUVmax,and tried to find a clinical value of 18F-FDG PET-CT for theinitial evaluation of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods The cases of 23 patients, 16 men and 7 women, whounderwent PET-CT examination before operation wereretrospectively reviewed. We measured the SUVmax of theprimary renal cancers and those of any existing metastaticlesions, and the size of the primary renal cancers. Wecompared the SUVmax of primary RCCs with metastasesand those without metastases, SUVmax of primary RCC andthose of metastases, and studied the correlation between thesize and SUVmax of primary RCCs. Results The SUVmax of primary RCC of the 16 patientswithout metastasis ranged from 1.1 to 5.6 with a median valueof 2.6. Those of the patients with metastasis ranged from 2.9 to7.6 with a median of 5.0. The size of the all 23 primary renalcancers ranged from 1.7 cm to 13.5 cm, with a median of4.5 cm, and their SUVmax ranged from 1.1 to 7.6, with amedian of 2.9. There was a statistically significant differencebetween the SUVmax of the primary RCC with metastasis (5.3±1.7) and those without metastasis (2.9±1.0). There was amoderate positive correlation between the sizes and SUVmaxof all 23 primary RCCs. However, there was no statisticallysignificant correlation between the sizes and SUVmax ofprimary RCCs with metastatic lesions and the same for RCCswithout metastasis. The cutoff value of SUVmax for predictingextra-renal lesion was 4.4 and that for size was 5.8 cmaccording to the receiver operating characteristic curves. Conclusions Those who have primary RCC with highSUVmax are suggested to have a likelihood of metastasis. Also, there was a moderate trend of increasing value ofSUVmax of primary RCC as their size increases. Physiciansshould beware of missing extra-renal lesions elsewhere.

This study examined whether amifostine (WR-2721) could attenuate memory impairment and suppress hippocampal neurogenesis in adult mice with the relatively low-dose exposure of acute radiation syndrome (ARS). These were assessed using object recognition memory test, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling assay, and immunohistochemical markers of neurogenesis [Ki-67 and doublecortin (DCX)]. Amifostine treatment (214 mg/kg, i.p.) prior to irradiation significantly attenuated the recognition memory defect in ARS, and markedly blocked the apoptotic death and decrease of Ki-67- and DCX-positive cells in ARS. Therefore, amifostine may attenuate recognition memory defect in a relatively low-dose exposure of ARS in adult mice, possibly by inhibiting a detrimental effect of irradiation on hippocampal neurogenesis.

Cytogenetic and hematological analyses were performed on the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) obtained from Korean native cattle bred in the vicinity of three nuclear power plants (Wolsong, Uljin and Yeonggwang) and in a control area. The micronucleus (MN) rates for the cattle from the Wolsong, Uljin and Yeonggwang nuclear power plants and for the control area were 9.87 ± 2.64, 8.90 ± 3.84, 9.20 ± 3.68 and 9.60 ± 3.91 per 1,000 cytokinesis-blocked lymphocytes, respectively. The apparent difference is not statistically significant. The MN frequencies of PBLs from cattle bred in the four areas are within the background variation for this study. The MN frequencies and hematological values were similar regardless of whether the cattle were bred near a nuclear power plant or in the control area.

Na0.5K0.5NbO3 (NKN) thin films were grown on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by using RFmagnetron sputtering. We investigated the behavior of the ferroelectric polarization. Well-saturated P-V hysteresis loops were observed, but the P-V hysteresis loops were sometimes distorted and consisted of three roughly parallel components, such as ferroelectric, dielectric and conductive components. Correction methods were proposed to identify the undesirable components and the pure ferroelectric polarization components from the observed P-V hysteresis loops. A new polarization hysteresis loop measurement technique, the double wave method (DWM), was applied to NKN thin films to obtain pure ferroelectric polarization and elucidate the behaviors of the polarization components.
