디지털 돌봄과 친밀감- 한국 ASMR의 콘텐츠 특성과 커뮤니티 사례 연구 -

ASMR(Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) is a somatic reaction to specific stimuli which trigger tingling sensations in the head and spine and produce reliable euphoria. Not everyone experiences such sensations, and it is by no means an official medical term. However, recent years have witnessed the rise of this term via online video platforms such as Youtube. Indeed, the term itself was coined as online communities started to share such experiences amongst themselves. This paper attempts to examine the characteristics of ASMR videos made by Korean creators and explore the nature of Korean ASMR online communities. To this end, the paper draws upon 200 Youtube videos selected for content analysis and also uses online ethnography to take a close look at ASMR communities. Furthermore, the paper analyzes how ASMR is understood in Korean mainstream media. Whilst the global ASMR community has resisted being publicly labeled pseudo-pornography since its birth, mainly because whispering women feature in many ASMR videos, Korean mainstream media did not relate ASMR to eroticism but painted it to be a new online media product that aids sleep. Content analysis shows very few ASMR videos actually including sexual connotations. Instead, the majority of Korean ASMR videos focus on inducing relaxation and intimacy while creating a virtual reality of care. ASMR videos take an unconventional approach to generating intimacy: sound (including voice) is central to ASMR videos, bridging the actual distance between the ASMRtist and the viewer, and creating impressions on the body. The online culture of ASMR community resembles the characteristics of ASMR videos in general, in the sense that it features openness, sympathy, and receptivity. Unlike sub-cultural communities which form exclusive and hierarchical taste culture, the ASMR community is a loosely connected community of unique but diverse tastes. The paper analyzes ASMR video culture as a representative case of digital intimacy. ASMR은 자율 감각 쾌락 반응(Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) 의 약자로 특정 자극에 대해 ‘팅글’이라고 불리는 전율, 따끔거리는 기분, 좋은 느낌을 의미하는 용어이다. 흥미롭게도 이 용어는 공식적인 의학 용어가 아니며, 온라인을 통해 이러한 느낌을 공유하는 커뮤니티가 형성되면서 발생한 용어이다. 본 논문은최근 유튜브 등 동영상 공유 플랫폼을 중심으로 확산되고 있는 독특한 1인 미디어콘텐츠, ASMR을 살펴보고 그 커뮤니티의 특성에 대한 이해를 도모하고자 한다. 이를 위해 국내 유튜브 ASMR 채널을 대상으로 전반적인 내용 분석을 실시하고, 이 중 특정 몇몇 ASMR 채널을 선정해 온라인 민속지적 관찰을 시도하였다. 또한한국에서 ASMR을 둘러싼 주류 사회의 시선이 어떻게 형성되어 있으며 ASMR 커뮤니티는 이러한 틀 지우기에 어떻게 대응하는지 살펴보기 위해, 미디어 보도를분석하였다. 일반적인 영상물이 시각 중심인데 반해, ASMR 콘텐츠는 ‘소리’가 주요매개로서 시각적 요소를 비롯한 다른 감각적 요소들이 청각적 효과를 극대화 하는방식으로 구성되는 특징을 보인다. 해외에서는 많은 ASMR 콘텐츠이 여성들의 속삭임을 담고 있다는 점 등으로 인해 성적 콘텐츠로 낙인화하는 경향이 있었고 해외ASMR 커뮤니티는 이에 대항하는 정체성을 강화시켜왔다. 그러나 국내의 주류 미디어에서는 ASMR 콘텐츠를 주로 수면 촉진, 힐링 등과 연결시키며 대체로 긍정적인 시선으로 바라보고 있었다. 실제 조사 결과, 국내 ASMR 콘텐츠들 역시 돌봄과휴식 제공에 초점을 맞춰 제작되는 경향이 지배적이었다. 국내 ASMR 커뮤니티역시 이러한 콘텐츠의 성격과 궤를 함께 하며, 배타적인 하위문화 커뮤니티로서의특징보다는 개방성과 포용성을 특징으로 하는 느슨한 취향공동체로서의 모습을 보였다. 본 논문은 ASMR 커뮤니티를 ‘디지털 친밀감’이 작동하는 대표적인 사례로분석한다.
