Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were in detail characterized by XRD, XPS, FTIR, and thermogravimetric measurements. Carboxylic acid groups were functionalized to MWNTs under aqueous acid condition. The changes of sonication and reflux conditions rarely influenced the degree of carboxylation on MWNTs, but decreased the thermal stability of the resultant carboxylated MWNTs. XRD results showed that the diffraction peaks (100), (101), and (102) of pristine MWNTs disappeared after acid treatment, but the diffraction peak (002) was Preserved in the carboxylated MWNTs. The introduction of carboxylic acid groups on MWNTs caused to improve the dispersibility of the resultant carboxylated MWNTs in water.

Si wafer, which was treated with TMSP-TBA (N-trimethoxysilylpropyl-n,n,n-tri-n-butylammonium bromide), was used foF a substrate to grow a MFI membrane. Growth of membranes was conducted in various conditions such as temperature and gravity, and their structures were in detail studied with field emission scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffractometer. The structures of membranes grown on substrates were strongly dependent on growing temperature and gravity.

The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between stainless steels (AISI316) and interstitial free (IF) steels were investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensileshear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The fracture surface was investigated by using a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the STS316 sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite. In order to evaluate the microstructure further, dilution of stainless steels were calculated and imposed onto the Schaeffler diagram. The predicted microstructure from the Schaeffler diagram was martensite. In order to confirm the predicted microstructure, XRD measurements were carried out. The results showed that that initial weld nugget was composed of austenite and martensite.

The interfacial adhesion properties of enamel-coated, alloyed steels were in detail characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The surfaces of alloyed steels existed as oxidized states of Fe3O4. Therefore, the oxidized surfaces of the steels significantly interacted with the coated enamels for the adhesion. Ti-alloyed steel showed many micro-boundaries during thermal treatment and these micro-boundaries might cause the decline of the interfacial adhesion between enamel and steel. The depth profiles of enamel-coated, alloyed steels were investigated by GDS (glow discharge spectroscopy) and Ti component was found to be related to the interfacial adhesion between enamel and steel.
