Numerical simulation has been made on the performance of an oil free air compressor for automotive electronic air suspension system. Calculation results on the flow rate at various air supply pressures were reasonably well compared to the experimental data. With the aid of the computer simulation program, parametric study on the compressor design parameters has also been carried out for the compressor performance improvement: Increase in the discharge port diameter or discharge valve stiffness was found to be effective to increase the flow rate per unit compressor input for the present compressor model.

Orbiter mechanism has been applied to vacuum pump design for small oxygen generator where low vacuum of about 200 ㎜Hg is required. Performance of the designed vacuum pump has been numerically investigated: calculated volumetric and adiabatic efficiencies were 69.7% and 83.9%, respectively for leakage clearance of 10㎛. Total efficiency of the orbiter vacuum pump was 77.5%. At the shaft speed of 1700 rpm suction displacement volume of 6.3cc provided discharge flow at the rate of 2.3 liter/min with power consumption of 10.1Watt. Torque variation of the orbiter pump was only about 20% of that of diaphragm pump.

A numerical study has been carried out for the performance analysis of restrained rotary vane air compressor used for fuel cell. Restrained rotary vane compressor is characterized by vane gripper which hold the vanes attached to the central stationary shaft so that centrifugal forces of the vanes should not be imposed on the cylinder wall. Influence of mismatch of the built-in pressure ratio determined by discharge port angle with the operation pressure ratio has been investigated by using performance simulation program. When the compressor model with the built-in pressure of 1.13 was operated at the pressure ratio of 2, flow rate was decreased by 14.3%, and the compressor input was increased by 11.4%.

Potential application of scroll type machine to air compressor for fuel cell has been studied. Among seven configuration factors which determine scroll wrap profile, wrap thickness and orbiting radius were chosen as two independent variables to generate various scroll wrap profiles. A conceptual design practice was conducted for scroll air compressor for SOFC with power output of 2㎾. Performance analysis on the designed model showed that its total efficiency was around 54%-59%, depending on the orbiting radius. With larger orbiting radius, base plate area of the orbiting scroll becomes smaller, so is the axial gas force acting on the base plate, resulting in reduced thrust loss in spite of larger friction velocity.

Performance analysis on the designed model showed that its total efficiency was 64.4% with the mass flow rate per unit compressor input of 0.00905 ㎏/(sㆍ㎾) for the wrap thickness of 3.5 ㎜ and the orbiting radius of 3.0 ㎜.

HYOSUNG manufactured and tested 1kw class PEFC systems to generate electrical and thermal energy for each residential usage. In particular, HYOSUNG developed power conditionig system that performs about 91% electrical conversion ratio specified in 1㎾ class PEFC systems. Prior to system integration, we tested each performances of components to derive control issues from it. In addition, we have been developing the adequate simulator to describe and predict system performance. In this paper, we verified HYOSUNG's 1㎾ class PEFC systems are valid for residential energy sureces by testing the characteristics of systems and performances of main component.
