This paper studies the wind pressure distribution over the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Council building model (CAARC model) using CFD. We also considered the interaction between the CAARC model and other buildings. The Reynolds number based on the building height was 380,000. The number of sells for the simulation was about 500,000. The wind pressure was lowest when the wind direction was blowing at an angle 45 degrees of the CAARC model. When the gap between the two buildings in front of the CAARC was over 1/2 the horizontal length of the CAARC model, the wind pressure was higher than the pressure without the two buildings. When the distance between the two front buildings and the CAARC was less than 1.5 times the vertical length of the CAARC model, the wind pressure increased. Accordingly, the relative distance between two buildings or the distance from the CAARC model should be considered when extra wind exists due to other buildings.

This study reviews the discharge coefficient for thermal buoyancy natural ventilation through experimentation. We measure the air velocity at the outlet, which is needed to derive the discharge coefficient and to compare with the theoretical value. When a temperature difference exists between the inside and outside of the building, the measured discharge coefficient differs from the theoretical value with a maximum difference of 12%. The size and position of the openings have little effect on the discharge coefficient. For practical application, the theoretical discharge coefficient can be used with little modification.

This study evaluates the capacity of night purging in office buildings to reduce the cooling load. RTS-SAREK is used to estimate the performance of night purging on the steady state. To overcome steady state RTS program limitations, we added unsteady heat transfer equations. When the ACH (Air Change per Hour) increases, the wall temperature decreases in both the steady and unsteady states. The unsteady heat transfer rate is different from the steady transfer rate, which validates the unsteady calculation. When ACH is low, the heat transfer rate increases continuously ith time. When ACH becomes higher, the heat transfer rate increases and decreases with time. When ACH is quite high, there exists a large difference in the heat transfer rate between the steady and unsteady calculations, which emphasizes the importance of the unsteady calculation.

Flow field and near-field noise of a centrifugal fan has been studied with an efficient compressible method and STAR-CD. The flow field of the centrifugal fan is assumed two-dimensional. Most of the compressible studies has been done by inviscid solver because viscous simulation shows little difference. The near field noise is estimated in terms of sound pressure level in frequency domain transformed from the computed pressure fluctuations using FFT. The simulation has been done on various design elements such as impeller blade shapes, the number of blades and cut-off clearance. The comparison shows that the number of blades has a significant effect on near-field noise without losing aerodynamic performance.
