Vol.- No.12

Compared to western families, Korean family has unique characteristics by having strong family-centered values. Korean parents tend to believe that surveillance of parents over teenagers are very important to socialize their young children in the right direction. Parents have strong influences on deciding not only children's career, but everyday schedule of children including after-school activities or peer relationship. Korean parents tend to believe that success of children results from both efforts and financial supports of parents. Especially Korean parents do not mind spending a lot of money for private tutoring so that their children can pass college entrance exam. Accepting strong social pressure of emphasizing children's academic achievements and records, parents tend to internalize high competition among students. Focusing on the uniqueness of socialization process within Korean families, I tried to find out value system of teenagers. First, I described how Korean familism had influenced on the socialization process of children. Second, I examined how achievement-oriented family values had been enforced in Korean society which emphasize school networks. Third, I highlighted the gender roles of parents and children. Finally, I suggested the ways to reduce conflicts expected between parents and teenage children.

Vol.- No.8

This paper aims to figure out the major features of husband-wife relationship in Korean families. First, using a data set of the first National Family Survey which was conducted by Ministry of Gender Equality and Korean Institute for Women`s Development in the year 2003, I tried to figure out the overall features of couple relationship and better understand current relationships among Korean family members. The size of the sample included for the analysis was 2,676 married couples. Second, this study has focused on the differences in husband-wife relationships by gender, stratification, and generation. Based on these major variables, I examined the similarities and differences in couple relationships among subgroups of the society. Especially utilizing the gender-sensitive perspectives, this paper critically reviews the existing Korean family system and family relationship. By doing so, I discussed the possible ways of future family policies based on gender-equality. The discussions on gender-equal family policies enabled to suggest specific policies to reduce the long-lasted one-sided women`s sacrifices for family members and instability found in the husband-wife relationship at the same time.

Based on the results of questionnaire survey of 2006, which was held in both Korea and Japan, I tried to compare the characteristics of social conspicuousness and family between the two countries. The results of the data analysis show that two countries are quite different in the degree or contents of social conspicuousness or its linkage with the families, despite of the similar cultural tradition under Confucianism. First, Koreans tend to regard family more important decisions more than the Japanese parents did. Second, Japanese and Koreans showed different attitudes about social conspicuousness as well. While many Koreans answer that they can not show off wealth due to the lack of money even though they really want to, the largest percent of Japanese respondents answered that they do not have the desire itself. Third, as the materialistic aspects of social conspicuousness is strong, the phenomena of stratified class by consumption and the fetishism of love are distinet in Korea.

Vol.- No.13

The rapid transition toward information-oriented society has not only initiated changes in human relations, but foreseen changes in ways of communication among family members, family relationships, and intimacy. The results of developments in IT technology, globalization, and internationalization are anticipated to make family relationship more flexible and facilitate horizontal relationships among family members, and to change into the direction of acknowledging the diversities and specificities of families in Korea. The paper attempted to explore the image of families having adolescent children by analyzing core trends of environments surrounding families. First, I anticipate that the diversification of family structure and needs of family will proceed continuously. Second, the traditional type of family ties will be weakened. And tensions among family members will be strengthened by the orientation toward horizontal relationship and weakness of caring services and growing generation gap. Third, demands of more democratic and rational family values will be growing in the future. Fourth, the needs of adolescents for self-regulating behavior will be enlarged. These four core trends will also influence on the parent's relationship with adolescent children in the near future.

Vol.3 No.-

Previous studies comparing Korea and Japan have over-emphasized the similarities between the two countries based on the only fact that they are similar in sharing Confucian traditions. This study attempts to clarity both similarities and differences in family and kinship between Korea and Japan in five aspects:familism, family structure, family functions, family relations, and family rituals. This article shows that both Korea and Japan have preserved strong familism and the ideology of "wise mother and good wife" based on Confucian tradition. The traditional gender roles have influenced family relations, as well as husband-wife relationships, in both countries. However, major differences are found in the fact that the Korean family has emphasized the importance of the blood relationship much more than the Japanese family. While only consanguine adoption was permitted in Korea during the Chosun dynasty, Japanese families were much more open toward adoption from non-relatives. Comparing the difference in the financial foundations and continuity of families, this study also attempts to figure out changes and trends anticipated in families in both countries.
