        Sex Identification in Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus) from Feather and Blood Samples: A Case Report

        Twenty-four cinereous vultures that had been taken to a wildlife center due to starvation and exhaustion were studied to evaluate approaches for determining sex. Coelioscopy was performed to identify sexes of two vultures, whereas, DNA testing was performed to identify the sexes of the 24 vultures. Testes and ovaries could be unambiguously identified with an endoscope and DNA analyses could identify sex sex in most, but not all of the specimens. Although the coelioscopy examination can unambiguously confirm sex, the approach is invasive and requires anesthesia. Thus, coelioscopic examination should only be performed when sex cannot be determined through DNA analysis.

        Effect of Intravenous Administration of Tramadol on the Minimum Alveolar Concentration of Isoflurane in Dogs

        This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of tramadol hydrochloride on the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane (MACISO) in dogs. Six healthy, female German shepherd dogs (aged 1-2 years) were used in this study. Anesthesia was induced by mask induction and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. Mechanical ventilation maintained the end-tidal CO2 partial pressure (PETCO2) from 35 to 45 mmHg throughout the study. A baseline MACISO (MACISOB) was determined starting 45 minutes after induction of anesthesia by clamping a pedal digit until gross purposeful movement was detected. After MACISOB determination, dogs received a tramadol loading dose of 3 mg/kg followed by a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of 2.6 mg/kg/h. The determination of MACISO after administration of tramadol (MACISOT) began 20 min after the start of the CRI. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded continuously and arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis were collected at the end of the equilibration period. Mean ± SD values for the MACISOB and MACISOT were 1.33 ± 0.04% and 1.23 ± 0.04%, respectively. The MACISOB decreased significantly by 7.5 ± 0.2% (P < 0.05) after administration of tramadol. The mean heart rate and arterial blood pressure of six dogs were not changed significantly after tramadol administration. The blood gas levels remained constant during the study. In conclusion, tramadol could significantly reduce MACISO without depression of cardiorespiratory function. Thus, the use of tramadol on inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane in dogs can improve the stability of anesthesia and the quality of recovery.

        독수리(Aegypius monachus)의 흡입마취에서Capnography를 이용한 호기말 이산화탄소분압 모니터링

        The relationships between end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PETCO2) and arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), and between PETCO2 and blood pH in isoflurane-anesthetized cinereous vultures were evaluated. Nine cinereous vultures (weighing 7.3-9.5 kg) were anesthetized via mask with isoflurane, intubated, and connected to a mechanical ventilator. By mechanical ventilator, respiratory rate was altered to achieve a PETCO2 randomly selected among 30 to 35 mmHg. PaCO2 and blood pH were determined in serial arterial samples and compared with concurrent PETCO2 measured with a sidestream capnography. Thirty six samples, nine cinereous vultures were tested 4 times each, were used to determine correlations coefficients between PaCO2 and PETCO2, and between PETCO2 and blood pH. Strong correlations were observed between PaCO2 and PETCO2 (r = 0.951, P = 0.000, y = 1.679x − 30.236, R2 = 0.905) as well as between PETCO2 and blood pH (r = −0.728, P = 0.000, y = −0.024x + 8.389, R2 = 0.530) with Pearson’s correlation coefficient and simple linear regression. These results suggest that the capnography used provided a sufficiently accurate estimation of PaCO2 and blood pH. Thus, the monitoring of PETCO2 can be useful method to prevent hypoventilation for cinereous vultures receiving mechanical ventilation.

        Factors Affecting the Healing of Radial Fractures Using Acrylic Pin External Fixation in Small Breed Dogs

        Healing of 48 cases of radial fractures in small breed dogs treated with acrylic pin external fixation was evaluated retrospectively to investigate the factors affecting the healing of radial fractures. The mean age of the subjects was 15.02 months, the mean body weight was 3.48 kg, and the mean maximum length of the radius (MLR) was 90.77 mm. External skeletal fixation frames type 1a, 2a, and 3 were used; among them type 2a was used most frequently (75%). The mean time to clinical union (TCU) was 67.17 days, and the success rate was 95.8%. Age, bodyweight, MLR, and occurrence of complications increased TCU significantly. Among complications, pin loosening, swelling of the operated forelimb tissue for more than 2 weeks, and coexistence of two or more complications increased TCU significantly (p < 0.05). There was no relationship between location of the fracture and TCU. The results of this study may be useful to predict the prognosis of radial fractures in small dogs.

        Orchiectomy in the Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus)

        The Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is globally protected species and involved in a species restoration program by the Korea National Park Service. However, the bears could not be released into the wild were required regulation of population due to the limited space of breeding facility, so surgical castration was performed in two males. Bears were immobilized with a combination of 2 mg/kg tiletamine-zolazepam and 40 μg/kg medetomidine, and general anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane via endotracheal tube intubation. Orchiectomy was carried out by the closed method using the LigaSure vessel sealing device through pre-scrotal incision. Subcutaneous tissues of the incision site were sutured by continuous pattern with absorbable suture material, and the skin incision was closed with tissue glue. The bears recovered uneventfully from general anesthesia after a duration of 58 min (bear A) and 53 min (bear B). Total surgical time was 26 min (bear A) and 24 min (bear B). No postoperative swelling or complications were observed. This is the first report that describes the use of the LigaSure for orchiectomy in the Asiatic black bear.

        Diagnostic Laparoscopic Biopsy in Dogs and Cats

        Four dogs and two cats received laparoscopic or laparoscopic-assisted biopsy of abdominal organs for definite diagnosis of illness. Patients were presented with a chief complaint of acute or chronic vomiting excluding case 5 (seizure). Two patients needed the liver biopsy (case 1 and 5), and others did stomach and small intestine biopsy excluding case 2 (small intestine biopsy only). Surgical procedure was performed with modified standard methods. All patients recovered uneventfully and did not require any hospitalization without complications. Laparoscopic and laparoscopic-assisted biopsy could offer benefits of reduced incision length and rapid postoperative recovery.

        Comparison of Ovariectomy and Ovariohysterectomy in Terms of Postoperative Pain Behavior and Surgical Stress in Dogs

        This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical relevance and effectiveness of ovariectomy (OVE) and ovariohysterectomy (OVH) in terms of postoperative pain behavior and surgical stress. Thirteen healthy intact mongrel purpose-bred female dogs were used in this study. OVE was performed in six dogs whereas OVH was performed in seven dogs. Prior to, 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, and 24 h after surgery, pain assessment was performed by using the Short form of Composite Measure Pain Scale (CMPS-SF) and blood analysis for the determination of glucose, creatine kinase (CK), and cortisol were done. Also, surgical time, duration of anesthesia, and incision length were compared between two groups. As a result, OVH group as opposed to OVE group showed significantly longer in surgical time, duration of anesthesia, and incision length. Also, based on the two-way ANOVA test, the CMPS-SF had significant differences (p < 0.05) between two groups, with the OVE dogs having lower values at 1, 2, 4, and 6 h postoperatively. In addition,in terms of CK, the value at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 12 h were significantly (p < 0.05) increased from the baseline value for the OVH group. However, as for CK in OVE group, the values at 4, 6, and 12 h were significantly increased from the baseline value. As for blood glucose, a significant (p < 0.05) increase from the baseline was shown at 1 h postoperatively in OVH group and no significant increase was shown in OVE group. In terms of serum cortisol level,the values at the 1 and 2 h were significantly (p < 0.05) increased from the baseline value for both groups. In conclusion,our study has shown that OVE can be considered as a superior choice in terms of sterilization technique in female dogs, considering shorter incision length, surgical time, duration of anesthesia along with lower pain and surgical stress response than OVH.

        Comparison of LigaSureTM and Bipolar Vessel Sealing System for Laparoscopic Ovariectomy in Cats

        The aim of this study was to investigate and compare technique, surgical time, and complications oflaparoscopic ovariectomy using LigaSureTM and bipolar vessel sealing system in cats. Laparoscopic ovariectomy wasperformed under general anesthesia on 10 healthy female cats admitted for elective ovariectomy. Surgery was performedthrough three midline portals. Each ovary was randomly-assigned to removal by use of either LigaSureTM or bipolarvessel sealing system. Duration of predetermined surgery intervals and complications were compared. Bipolar OVE(2:16 ± 1:14 minutes) took significantly longer surgical time compared to the LigaSureTM OVE (1:24 ± 0:59 minutes,P = 0.021). The ovarian pedicle fat and obesity did not influence surgery duration. Intraoperative hemorrhage occurredwith bipolar OVE in three cats, but had no significant influence on surgical time. The results suggest that bothLigaSureTM and bipolar devices appear to be effective, but LigaSureTM can be used as a stand-alone device that decreasessurgical time and complication compared with bipolar vessel sealing system.

        Diagnosis and Treatment of Feline Inflammatory Polyp with Video Otoscopy : A Case Report

        Otic mass removal was performed in a 19-month-old, castrated domestic shorthair cat. The patient had 1-year history of recurrent otitis externa, and then otic mass in the right ear canal was found. Under general anesthesia,2.7 mm rigid endoscope was inserted to the right ear canal with the irrigation system. The ovoid-shaped, 4.9 mm in diameter red otic mass located in the right ear canal was removed via traction-avulsion. Then, rupture of the tympanic membrane was revealed and otic flushing was performed with sterile isotonic (0.9%) saline to remove exudates. Histologically, the removed polyp was diagnosed as granulation tissue with severe ulceration. The patient didn’t reveal any remarkable abnormality after surgery, and no recurrence were found after 5 months follow up. The video otoscopy seems to offer a useful option for treatment of a feline inflammatory polyp.
