The normal lung volumes were determined and subdivided under sitting position in 50 nurse students. All subjects were free of pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. The vital capacity was measured by McKesson's 'spirometer and the functional residual capacity was determined by Darling's open circuit method. The following results were obtained. 1. The lung volumes determined were: vital capacity 3.1±0.042 l (BTPS), functional residual capacity 2.51±0.049 l (BTPS) and residual volume 1.14±0.029 l (BTPS). 2. The calculated residual ratio (RV/TLC×100) was 26.72±0.53%, and functional residual ratio (FRC/TLC×100) was 55.49±0.55%, and were within the normal range. 3. The correlation coeffcient between vital capacity and total lung capacity was 0.895and total lung capacity was represented by the following regressions equation: Y(TLC)=1.13χ+0.74(l). 4. The correlation coefficients between body surface area, body height and vital capacity were 0.673 and 0.673 respectively. The correlation coefficient between vital capacity and functional residual capacity was 0.564.

The frogs skin is of vital importance in the enhanced water uptake. Recently, the oxytocic substance is mainly responsible for this enhancing influence upon the skin after the injection of the posterior pituitary hormone. The increase of -net water transfer across the frogs skin after the application of pituitrin might be on energy dependent active process (Hong). The present investigation attempts to assess the mechanisms of oxytocin action upon frogs water uptake. Net water transfer across the skin and urine formation by the kidney during 3 hrs were studied in frogs (Rana temporaria) under the influence of oxytocin (Nutritional Biochemical Corp.), when placed in distilled water, 0.2 mM/L solution of KCN, IAA, NaF and NaCN bathing medium. The frogs of both sexes weighing between 10 and 30 gm were used in this study. The frogs were placed in 500 ml glass beaker containing 200 ml of either distilled water or other bathing medium. The amount of water uptake was calculated from the body weight changes during 3 hrs and expressed in percent of the body weight increment to initial body weight. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The water uptake across the frog skin increased approximately 80% after the injection of oxytocin, with little increase in urine formation. 2) The oxytocin effect frogs was treated with metabolic inhibitors. 3) The urinary Na and K concentration increased significantly after the injection of oxytocin when placed in distilled water. 4) The data obtained was discussed with pituitrin and oxytocic action on the frogs skin and renal electrolyte excretion reported by others.
