This paper aims to conduct a linguistic analysis of discourses by three Korean politicians who ran for the Korean presidency in 2012. Data on their speech and writing are collected for this purpose from TV talk shows on which they appeared and the books they wrote. Various methods are used to analyse the data, such as network analysis, word frequency analysis and the lexical repetition measuring method. Firstly, we extract frequent words from each politician’s subcorpus and identify statistically distinctive words that each politician used more frequently than other politicians. Secondly, we construct networks of co-occurring words via which the differences in network structure are analysed. Finally, a new method for measuring lexical repetition is used to discover pragmatic differences in their discourses. By applying these methods to the discourse data, we can more effectively propose linguistic characteristics of the politicians’ discourses.

Ever since the sociology of language has made its start, it has been continuously confronting with social issues in the field. Social issues such as fledgling nations, racial discrimination, gender equality, minority groups, language death and intercultural communication had its significance more intimate as the matter of behavior and value of scholars who sees the scenes of life than simple lecture or research field. Also the sociology of language had been in charge of being ahead in the historical changing process such as liberation from suppresion, uniformity to diversification, destratification, decolonization. Although there has not been many cases where the sociology of language took the lead or be active in the aforementioned incidents, but at least, their approach to the historical change with knowledge and sensibility should be highly evaluated. In the future, issues such as climate, the rights of minority, multicultural social condition, aging and market integration will be the significant topics of life, and in these issues, the sociology of language tasks will be presented. Though a critical mind related to the space one is living in, one’s identity and interests will inevitably take the lead in the flow of the sociology of language, above all, it seems that the issue of political, historical rights of language and the creation of new jobs related to language will play a significant role.

The purpose of this article is to examine the necessity and the possibility of sociolinguistic approach to minority in Korea. Firstly, this article defines the concept of ‘minority’ and looks around its socio-historical background and implication. And then, several types of minority can be divided on the basis of its formative period and birthplace. As the next step, two forms of sociolinguistic approach to minority, that is, ‘linguistic human right approach’ and ‘linguistic citizenship approach’ are presented. This article cannot provide a detailed analysis and an alternative, but affords an opportunity to point out the significance and the limit of these two approaches. Finally, this article is concluded by proposing the cultural restructurization of the diversity and the uniformity in Korean society which includes its minority, and by presenting some sociolinguistic tasks related to the abolition of discrimination against minority and guarantee of its linguistic right.

A national research project is being conducted to provide building energy information, which is now mainly limited to energy consumption data by fuel type, for each end use such as space heating, space cooling, domestic hot water (DHW), etc. In order to achieve research objectives, energy consumption measurement systems by end use are being installed in sample buildings over a six-year period, which began in 2014. The aim of this study is to present statistical values on site energy use intensities by end use calculated using measurement data of 48 sample office buildings in Seoul for 1 year from May 2017 to April 2018, and to compare these data to the U.S. Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey(CBECS) 2012 data.

Traditional linguistics has not been recognizing public as a principal body that uses the language but rather isolated them. Linguists had tried to manage and control language instead of accepting the public as a principal user. Therefore, it is time to treat them as a group of users and not call them an individual user such as “a speaker” it seems. Since turn of the last century, as members of the civilized society, public has started voicing their opinions by participating in politics, in the market place, public spaces, schools and workplaces, and has achieved and/or protected their interests. Nowadays, it is almost impossible to maintain social structure without keeping track of public trends in all the areas of education, markets, government, political parties, art and sports and so on. It demands to recognize power of public again as a new role of personal computer has emerged and become main-stream of mass media since the end of 20thcentury. One distinctive characteristic of this new form of media is in the form of language that is used within, in which the public language overwhelms so called the elite language. It combines colloquial and written languages in one synchronized point of contact. Also, it not only exchanges messages but also does emotions as well. Accordingly, instead of being a lame combination of vocabularies and grammars, this new style language has become a multi-functional tool by which people would communicate feelings, expectations, and emotions altogether. Now, it is not the time for the elite group to manage and direct but the time for public to manage their own language as it serves their purposes. Hence, it also is a time for linguistics to change its own paradigm. Speech and text are unifying together and text and story are becoming a singular form of communicating tool. It is impossible to analyze relationship between the society and its language without understanding the language structure of the society in terms of its communication means that is being divided into two form of structures, face-to-face and media-based communication.
