Until recently, we do not have accurate data on manometric parameters of upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and UES/P (pharyngeal) coordination. With conventional manometric analysis of UES, normal values of these parameters need to be established. We measured resting UES and P pressure using station pull-through technique in ten normal volunteers. Five wet swallows were given to each subject. Normal data were resulted for length (2.2+0.6cm), resting pressure (34.9+9.6 mmHg), pharyngeal pressure (67.1+12.3mmHg), duration of UES relaxation (0.99+0.03 sec), duration of pharyngeal contraction (0.47+0.04 sec), duration from the beginning of the UES relaxation to the beginning of the P contraction (0.23+0.02 sec), duration from the beginning of the UES to the peak of P contraction (0.55+0.07 sec), and duration from the beginning of the UES to the end of the P contraction (0.73+0.04 sec). These characteristics of normal parameters are important to serve as a reference in the diagnosed of UES/P dysfunction, and guideline of the treatment.
