John Keats의 Five Odes에 나타난 미에 관한 고찰

김진규 경남대학교 인문과학연구소 1999 人文論叢 Vol.12 No.-

Throughout his short lifetime, Keats had a sceptical view of this world due to his mental conflict with reality. He didn't think metaphysical thoughts or religious ideas could solve all of life's problems. He thought over how he could give hope and courage to a life filled with loneliness. He came to the conclusion that he could do so by showing how, with imagination, we can find beauty in all things. He had a great ability to express this in his poems. He realized the natural law of things that nothing can remain unchained and everything will eventually perish. Beauty is transient. We ourselves are subject to this law, and will inevitably experience the life cycle. As told in Buddhism, we will eventually get old, get sick, and die. He emphasized immortality in the mortal world by discovering immortal beauty. According to Keats, nothing can be everlasting, but beauty will remain forever; he identified truth with beauty. He had systemized the problems of compensation resulting from pain since he understood the Psyche's love which existed in the past mythical world. Here we can notice that his poems illuminate the true value of life, for they contain the meaning of life, that happiness after difficulty is much more rewarding. In "Ode to a Grecian Urn," he came to realize the limitless nature of art and the truth of the present. That is, he saw the truth in the picture painted on the Urn. Only the beauty depicted in this picture could be everlasting through the limitless nature of the art form. The sense of art is a desire to be freed from reality. In "Ode to Melancholy," he shows that we come to forget happiness, beauty, and pleasure as we feel the beauty of nature and beauty of sense for the treatment of melancholy. He intends his poems to be a stepping stone to a good life as he re-identifies life with the poems of life to make reality glorious. Through his works he shows various mental practices to overcome the pain and hardship in the present. Therefore, through his sorrow and happiness, he comes to acknowledge and accept that hardship is just a natural part of life. In "Ode to a Nightingale," through nature, he gets absorbed in the world of endless human soul on the wings of imagination. That is, he has a strong tendency to escape from the ruthless pain and self-consciousness of reality, but leads the birds' song to the symbol of immortality in the tranquility of reality and illusion. Accordingly, he puts emphasis on the fact that true beauty is a true friend to console the human mind beyond the change and declination. In conclusion, the main point of the five Odes is that while human beings are living in the present, the immortal beauty taken from the imagination is the only thing that represents life as immortality. He believes this kind of beauty to be the principle of life or the goal. Keats gives human being consolation, pleasure, and an escape from reality by delivering the truth, beauty. In addition, he wants to give life meaning.
