The balcony area is an unconditioned zone of which window configuration makes significant impact on the annual heating and cooling load. Although there are design guide lines and building regulations associated with the thermal and optical criteria of the external surfaces of residential buildings, they are not sufficient in determining the balcony configuration to achieve better energy performance since design determinants such as U values, G values and window-to-wall area ratios can be interactively compromised. It is more effective to identify the best combination of the design determinants through holistic approaches. One of major holistic approaches is to use integrated simulation techniques which require substantial effort and time resources. In this study, a simplified model is suggested to identify the impact of design determinants of the balcony glazing configuration. The model is developed on the basis of detailed simulation results and statistical analysis (i.e. multi regression model). It is expected that the proposed model will allow designers to determine the balcony configuration at early design stage without using detailed simulation tools.
