Negotiating opinion and the use of Korean interpersonal modal ending in the KFL classroom
Vol.- No.32
This paper presents a sequential analysis of the interactional uses of the Korean interpersonal modal ending -canh- in opinion-negotiation sequences of English-speaking learners of Korean, observed in two different task formats, i.e. teacher-fronted discussion and student-led debate. Using the methodological framework of conversation analysis, this study provides a detailed account of the use of -canh- in each task type. A total of 89 opinion-negotiation episodes were identified. Overall, the collection of this study shows two distinctive features: (i) in teacher-fronted discussion, -canh- is exclusively used to give accounts. (ii) in student-led debate, -canh- is predominantly utilized to perform disagreements. Findings show that the choice of task format constrains range and functions of -canh- enacted by the learners, highlighting the influence of minor contextual differences. Given the importance in such interactional contexts of students performing to the best of their abilities, these findings promote implications for teaching practice in KFL classrooms.

This paper examines the use of question and self-answer adjacency pairs in ordinary Korean conversations. Analysis of 28 cases of question and self-answer adjacency pairs in the current data set found a routine practice in the use of question and self-answer adjacency pairs— disagreeing about other members’ prior stance. In other words, the speaker uses the question and self-answer adjacency pair as a resource to make disagreement. The analysis shows that the participants deploy three major practices in their turn of question and self-answer: providing evidence in their arguments, counter-challenging through specifying their arguments, and strong opposition through the use of multiple questions and self-answer. The unique design of question and self-answer adjacency pairs allows Korean speakers to strategically present delicate action of disagreement. Through enacting disagreement in particular in a question and self-answer format, the speakers are able to display their oppositional stance of disagreement in an effective way. The findings of this study expand our understanding of the intricate tactics involved in making disagreements in conversations.
Vol.0 No.35
This study aims at investigating whether the new Korean Language Teacher Training program(baeum-ieum-teo) for Korean as second language(KSL), by National Institute of Korean Language which was put into practice in 2019 promotes prospective Korean language teachers awareness of Korean language. In doing so, 50 current KSL Program teachers participated in the study. The data was collected through a questionnaire. As a result, most of the participating teachers responded positively to the online training at the National Institute of the Korean Language, which was presented as a preliminary task. However, there were opinions on limited topics and lack of practicality in the existing educational content. Accordingly, it is proposed to secure diversity in educational content and develop and provide lectures centering on contents related to difficulties that teachers experience in the field. In terms of lectures, it is necessary to organize lectures in a practical or discussion type rather than a one-way lecture. The subject of lectures KSL Korean teachers hoped for in the future was mainly ‘educational materials’. In particular, it is necessary to select topics and design lectures that can deal with contents that can be used by teachers who already have knowledge and experience related to Korean language education. Also, in order to support teachers effective data production activities, it is necessary to provide a place for teachers to exchange opinions by division, and propose a program structure that allows them to be actively used in the pre-, mid-, and post-departmental discussions.
