Background: Tinea pedis is one of the most comrnon dermatoses in the general population. But its prevalence in the general populat, ion was not yet reported in Korea. Objective : Prevalence of tinea pedis and associated tinea unguium were checked in the general population. Methods : Six hundred fifty eight persons from 179 families of the college students were evaluated. Clinical examinatior. for tinea pedis and onychomycosis and collecting scales from the suspicious lesions of the family members were perforrned by educated college students. Then dermatologists exarnined those specimens mycologically by KOH ~tnount and fungal culture. Results . The results were as follows 1. The prevalence of tinea pedis was 41.2% in the studied 658 persons. 2. Among all 271 patients with tinea pedis, 201 strains of dermatophytes were isolated. They were 143 strains of Trichophyton(T) rubrum, 49 strains of T. mentagrophytes and 9 mixed infections of T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes. In the co existence of i,inea pedis and tinea unguiurn, isolated species were corresponding. 3. Among 179 families, 143 families (79.9%) had at least one patient with tinea pedis. The isolated species of derrnatophytes in a farnily were one organism, 71.4% and two or more organisms, 28.6% of 77 familiys with more than one patient. Conclusion : In our study, the prevalence rate of tinea pedis was 41.2%. That suggests that tinea pedis is a wide spr .ad disease in healthy adult in Korea. (Kor J Dermatol 1997;35(1): 114-120)

We report a case of congenital giant pigmented nevus with malignant melanoma of brain in a 14-year-old male patient. He had giant pigmented nevus on the back and neck, and multiple satellite lesions over the whole body since birth. One year prior to visit to our hospital, the patient suffered from various neurologie symptoms including headache, nausea, vomiting, seizure and right side motor weakness. Flistologic findings of skin lesions were benign nevocytic nevi. Computed tomogram of brain demonstrated increased densities in the both fronto-parietal leptameninges and brain parenchyme. Histologic findings of brain parenchyme by stereotaxic long needle biopsy showed the infiltration of melanin containing atypical melanocytes. There was no evidence of malignant melanoma at other organs. All of these findings suggested that origin of malignant melanoma of brain parenchyme was leptomeninges rather than skin.

Background: The prevalence and number of new cases of leprosy have recently markedly decreased in Korea. Therefore, the concerns about leprosy have also gradually decreased. For this reason, making the diagnosis of leprosy is not as easy as it was in the past, and it is more difficult to find new cases of leprosy. Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the epidemiologic and clinical features of recently diagnosed cases of leprosy in Daegu city, Korea. Methods: Fifteen patients were diagnosed with leprosy according to the clinical features, histopathologic findings and bacteriologic examinations at Yeungnam University Hospital from 1992 to 2006. The epidemiological and clinical features according to age, gender, the place of residence, the duration of disease, the location of lesions, the cutaneous findings and the type of disease were evaluated retrospectively using the patients` medical records. The patients enrolled in this study were divided by the Madrid classification: the lepromatous type, the tuberculoid type and the intermediate or borderline group. Results: Fifteen patients were diagnosed with leprosy during the past 15 years. The ratio of males to females was 1.5:1. Most of the patients (66.6%) were aged in their 40`s and 60`s. This shows that the rate of patients 40 years or older is on the increase. The male patients were younger than the female patients. The male patients were in their 20`s and 40`s, whereas the female patients` ages ranged from their 50`s to 80`s. The skin lesions showed various features and six (40%) of the 15 patients had sensory change. Eleven (73.3%) of the 15 patients were in the borderline group, followed by 3 patients with the tuberculoid type (20%) and 1 patient with the lepromatous type (6.7%). Conclusion: New leprosy patients have been persistently found and the findings of this study suggest that dermatologists play an important role in diagnosing and treating leprosy and they have to pay attention to diagnose new cases of leprosy.
