Exploding foil initiator (EFI) is the advanced detonation device for highly insensitive explosives by employing the impact of high speed plastic flyer created by thin-film metallic bridge burst. The present analytical study introduces a physical process modeling of this initiation device which includes the bridge plasma expansion by deposition of pulsed electrical energy and flyer acceleration as well as the detonation model of flyer-explosive impact. A series of computations have been carried out to investigate effects of charging voltage on bridge burst current, flyer velocity, and detonation of HNS explosive, as the numerical results are favorably compared with EFI test results.

Exploding foil initiator (EFI) utilizes thin-film metallic bridge burst by pulsed electrical energy and formation of high velocity plastic film flyer for the explosive ignition. The present modeling includes the bridge evaporation and plasma expansion by joule heating and flyer acceleration, which is coupled with plasma property calculation and RLC circuit equation. The numerical results show that the modeling simulates dynamic responses of EFI operation such as bridge resistance or burst current quite well, as the present analysis is in good agreement with the existing experimental test data.
