The Effect of Korean Medicine Treatments on Facial Asymmetry: A Case Report

        권찬영,이훈희,임용석,Kwon, Chan-Young,Lee, Hoon-Hui,Im, Yong-Seok Society for Meridian and Acupoint 2017 Korean Journal of Acupuncture Vol.34 No.3

Objectives : Despite the applicability of Korean Medicine(KM) treatments for facial asymmetry, no relevant study has been reported. In this case report, we report the effect and safety of KM treatments on facial asymmetry by mandibular lateral displacement. Methods : Three patients suffering from facial asymmetry received twelve KM treatment sessions composed of Motion Style Treatment(MST), Yinyang Balance Appliance(YBA) of Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy(FCST), and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization(IASTM). The photos of each patient were taken before and after the treatment. And four primary reference lines were assessed before and after the treatment. Results : All subjects were improved after KM treatments on photos. However, no statistical significance was observed. Conclusions : This case report is the first to introduce the effect of KM treatments on facial asymmetry. Further well-designed, randomized, placebo-controlled trials are needed to verify these results.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to review and analyze domestic research trends of ear acupuncture and ear acupressure (EAs) in elderly population. Methods: We searched five domestic databases to collect relevant original clinical studies up to July 2, 2021. Conditions of elderly participants and results reported in included studies were analyzed. Methods of EAs used were analyzed referring to STandards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture. Results: A total of 17 studies including nine randomized controlled trials were analyzed. As for the target condition, sleep disorder was the most common (n=9), followed by pain condition (n=6). There were three studies on participants with specific Sasang constitution. Procedures of EAs used in nursing studies were generally similar to those of Korean medicine (KM). Conclusions: Domestic studies have reported that EAs might be helpful in improving the health of the elderly. In the future, more research studies using EAs for the elderly are needed in KM field. Collaborative research with KM nurses is recommended. EAs should be further investigated as a promising KM intervention in terms of health and welfare for the elderly.

Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using pig trotter on lactation and to determine its clinical efficacy. Methods: All relevant studies were searched in seven medical databases and were reviewed by independent two authors. Risk of bias tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Results: A total of eight RCTs were included in this review. In maternities with hypogalactia, pig trotter showed positive effects on lactation and breastfeeding compared to routine postpartum care or high-calorie/high-protein diet, however it was not effective compared with medical intervention such as other oriental herbal medicine, tuina, and acupressure. In maternities without hypogalactia, pig trotter showed positive effects on lactation and breastfeeding compared to routine postpartum care or high-calorie/high-protein diet. One study reported that gastrointestinal symptoms occurred in 5.36% of the group taking pig trotter. The risk of bias on included studies were generally unclear or high. Conclusions: Pig trotter can be used as supplementary maternity diets or decoctions for the purpose of promoting lactation and breastfeeding. However, higher quality, racial specific, and long-term studies should be performed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

Vol.32 No.1

Objectives: The aim of this scoping review was to analyze research trends about mental health of nurses working in Korean medicine (KM) hospitals in Republic of Korea. Methods: Searches were conducted using four electronic databases including Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, Korean Studies Information Service System, Research Information Sharing Service, Korea Citation Index to collect relevant studies. The search date was March 4, 2021. All studies published up to the search date were considered. Observational studies reporting mental health outcomes of nurses working at KM Hospital were included. Results: A total of 11 cross-sectional observation studies were included. Four of them compared mental health of nurses working on KM and Western medicine (WM). Commonly reported outcomes related to mental health were job satisfaction, role conflict, and work stress. As a result of meta-analysis based on a 5-point Likert scale, the following factors were related to mental health of KM nurses: job satisfaction (2.844±0.067 points), role conflict (3.678±0.058 points), work stress (3.142±0.021 points), turnover intention (3.483±0.028 points), and burnout (3.180±0.033). Compared to WM nurses, KM nurses had significantly less work stress (p=0.000), role conflict (p=0.039), and job satisfaction (p=0.000). Conclusions: Mental health problems of nurses are known to be very common. Although improving them is an important social task, studies on mental health of KM nurses remain insufficient. Based on findings of this study, more cooperation between nurses and KM doctors should be made to improve the mental health of KM nurses, especially their job satisfaction in the future. The Korean Society of Oriental Neuropsychiatry needs to pay more attention to this topic.

        이보람,권찬영,장수빈,Lee, Boram,Kwon, Chan-Young,Jang, Soobin 대한한방소아과학회 2021 대한한방소아과학회지 Vol.35 No.2

Objectives We aimed to examine health-related economic analysis of available interventions on idiopathic short stature (ISS). Methods Eight studies were reviewed from English, Korean, and Chinese databases which were published up to December 24, 2020. Effectiveness, utility, and cost data were extracted from the studies and descriptive analysis of the individual studies was conducted Results Five studies were chosen. In the two economic evaluation studies, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of growth hormone (GH) treatment was presented by performing cost-effectiveness analysis based on the deterministic decision tree approach for the GH and untreated group. Final adult height and direct medical costs were analyzed as effectiveness and cost outcomes. In 1 review article, an ICER of GH was presented based on systematic review on the effects of the GH treatment. In the two clinical trials, the effectiveness and cost of the 12 months Oriental medicine combination treatment were presented in comparison with the GH treatment alone. There were no literatures that provided utility data of available intervention on ISS. Conclusions The results of this study will be used as basic data for the economic analysis of Oriental medicine treatment on ISS in the future.

Objectives: We conducted a public health promotion program in Korean medicine for participants suffering from chronic insomnia in 2016∼2017. A significant improvement effect was obtained through the 8-week herbal medicine treatment program. The object of this study is to report the results of this public health promotion program. Methods: Seventy patients diagnosed with chronic insomnia participated in the program, 49 of whom completed the program. Participants were treated with the herbal medicine for insomnia treatment for 8 weeks. A sleep diary was used to assess the total sleep time, sleep latency, and number of times the participants woke. The treatment satisfaction was then evaluated. Results: Through the 8-week herbal medicine treatment program, the total sleep time was significantly increased by 109.59±70.77 minutes, the sleep latency was significantly decreased by 63.53±47.79 minutes, and the number of times the participants woke was significantly decreased by 1.54±1.19 times compared to the baseline (all, p=0.000). Among the 24 patients who were examined for the treatment satisfaction, the average score was 4.33 points of a total of 5 points. Six patients had adverse events. Except for one patient, the symptoms of other patients were mitigated by changing or discontinuing the herbal medicine. Conclusions: For patients with chronic insomnia, the 8-week herbal medicine treatment program was effective, with few side effects and high treatment satisfaction. This study has significance as this is the first report in Korea on the effect of a herbal medicine treatment program for chronic insomnia through Korean medicine public health promotion.

Objectives: People with tension-type headache generally take pain relievers, but long term dependency causes problems as well as side effects. The present study aimed to provide clinical evidence of herbal medicine for tension-type headache by systematic review of randomized controlled trials on the effect of herbal medicine for tension-type headache. Methods: Randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials that verified effects of herbal medicine intervention on patients with tension-type headache were included in the study. A literature search of English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean databases was performed. The selected literature were assessed by Jadad scale and Risk of Bias. Results: Herein, 40 reports were selected from a total of 157. Meta-analyses of 2 trials indicated that the effective rate was significantly higher in the herbal medicine treatment group, as compared to the placebo control (risk ratio: 1.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.23 to 1.80, p<0.0001, I2=0%). Four trials that compared herbal medicine with routine care with routine care only group showed a significantly higher effective rate of benefits for herbal medicine with routine care, as compared to routine care only (RR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.18 to 2.10, p=0.002, I2=0%). Conclusions: The effective rate was significantly higher than control and adverse events were less in the treatment group. Pattern analysis (辨證) indicated that the studies on wind-fire pattern (風火證) were highest. Yougeun-bang (柔筋方) in prescription and Paeoniae Radix Alba (白芍藥) in medicinal herbs were most used. This finding could be widely utilized in future clinical practice and form the basis for the development of clinical practice guidelines in advance.
