The purpose of this paper is to formalize semantically vague expressions in order to assign truth value. First of all we have observed four types of vague expressions and we have reviewed many theories about truth value assignment to vague expressions such as prototype theory, fuzzy theory and supervaluation theory based on dynamic theory. We have also examined what problems there are in these theories. Finally the formalization of semantically vague expressions based on intensional and extensional set was presented here. In conclusion vague expressions have extensional interpretation which has relative truth and intensional interpretation which has absolute truth. (Mokwon University)

The purpose of this paper is to present the pragmatic license conditions of NPI any. We have observed traditional and transformational analysis of any with their problems. We have also examined downward entailment theory, monotone decreasing theory and nonveridicality theory. Nonveridicality theory supplemented the weakness of downward entailment theory and monotone decreasing theory. But nonveridicality theory still had problems. Therefore pragmatic license conditions are presented to make up for nonveridicality theory as the followings: (1) Any is licensed in implicative negation; (2) Any is licensed when the existence of entities is not presupposed; and (3) Any is licensed at the situation of free choice. The purpose of this paper is to present the argument structure of the sentence in which manner adverbs modify state verbs. Manner adverbs are described as predicates of event argument when they modify event verbs. There is a semantic constraint that manner adverbs should modify event verbs. But the problem is that manner adverbs can sometimes modify state verbs. What is important is that manner adverbs means degree of state verbs when they modify state verbs. Therefore they can not be predicates of event argument. In this paper the manner adverb in a stative sentence has been presented as a predicate of the peripheral degree argument. (Mokwon University)

The purpose of this paper is to present the argument structure of perception verb See based on the semantic properties of See. As a result of this paper I found the followings: (1) Perception verb See has gaze as an invisible theme even though it is not realized in syntax. (2) Since See can be both event verb and state verb, it can be predicate of event argument or state argument. (3) When See has a direct visual meaning the event complement of See should be bare infinitive. If not, for example passive construction and state complement, to-infinitive should be used. (4) Since See has a backward meaning the complement of it can not be to-infinitive which has a future oriented meaning. (Mokwon University)

Since speaking is correlated with time and time is metaphorically conceptualized in terms of space. it is natural for us to conceptualize language metaphorically in terms of space. For example, we think that the future is in front and the pa[st is behind. Reddy(1979) suggested in his conduit metaphor that linguistic expressions are containers. According to him, the speaker puts his ideas(objects) into words(containers)and sends them along a conduit to a hearer who takes the idea(object) out of the word(container). As a result we are able to know that the larger linguistic expressions have more meaning in it. In other words the space of a linguistic form has close relationship with meaning. Moreover we are able to see that formal distance between arguments or elements of linguistic expressions shows semantic influences between them. If two elements keep close distance, a preceeding element has a strong, direct and whole influence upon the following element. Sometimes even the results of the influence can be brought out implicitly by the formal relation between two elements. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to show that this difference in meaning which is due to formal distance of sentence elements can be explained by the metaphorical concept presented by Lakoff and Johnson(1980).
