          The purpose of this paper is to analyze the recent trends of the development of the English textbooks in EFL situation. The 7th National English Curriculum(NEC) in 2001 which emphasized the curriculum-centered school education have had much influence on the traditional testbook-centered school education in Korea. According to the paradigmatic change of school education, the contents of the English textbooks were changed into the new types of students-centered classroom activities. For students' communicative activities, the English textbooks were developed by two types of syllabuses: process-oriented syllabus and product-oriented syllabus. The 7th NEC includes procedural syllabus and task-based syllabus as well as grammatical- structural syllabus and notional-functional syllabus. In short, unlike the English textbooks in former curriculums, learners' classroom activities and tasks have been emphasized in those to foster their communicative competence.

          Since Air and Correspondence High School (ACHS) in Korea was established in 1974, it has been serving many people who couldn't take the opportunities for learning in the regular high school due to several reasons. Regardless of the rapid change in technologies and educational needs during the past 31 years, however, ACHS hasn't changed much. Concerns have been recently made about the validity of the unchanged school system and many issues have been discussed relating to the innovation of the school system. Focusing on the teaching and learning contents, one of the important issues with respect to the school system, this paper examines the 7th English Curriculum for ACHS. The paper also investigates the textbooks used in ACHS to see how closely they align with the students' English proficiency and ACHS' instructional method by employing McDonough and Shaw's(1993) framework for textbook analysis. The results revealed that the current curriculum does not sufficiently reflect ACHS's characteristics, which leads to the adoption and development of inappropriate textbooks in terms of overall coherence, proficiency level, etc. The results suggest that the development of the curriculum and textbooks for ACHS should be based upon the students' needs and their level of proficiency rather than depending on the national curriculum and government-authorized textbooks intended for the relatively homogeneous school-age learners.

          소집단 협동학습이 학습동기와 영어 듣기능력 향상에 미치는 영향

          This study is to investigate the effects of the small group cooperation activities on various aspects of English learning motivation and listening proficiency of Korean university students. The relationship learning motivation and listening proficiency was examined, Also the small group cooperation activity and listening proficiency did. It was also explored that how learning motivation was influenced by the small group cooperation activity. The participants completed English learning motivation questionnaire and the small group cooperation activity questionnaire. They also took TOEIC twice during a semester as measurement of their English listening proficiency. The results of listening proficiency and learning motivation were influenced by the small group cooperation activities. The prominent factors for learning motivation were 'instrumental', achievement, and attitude on foreigners. Except for 'integrative', other factors of motivation were positively affected. Thus, to improve students' learning motivation and English listening proficiency, teachers should encourage students to participate in small group cooperative activities. There was a limitation of research, which was lack of participants, few chance of study. Based on the results, pedagogical suggestions were presented.

          한국인 학자와 영어 원어민 학자의 논문 영문 초록 비교 분석

          Most if not all research articles published in journals require the author to write an abstract regardless of academic field. However, abstract writing in English is a highly specialized genre on its own. In this light, the purpose of this study is to investigate differences in journal article abstracts written in English by Korean and native English scholars. 90 research paper abstracts written in English by Korean national scholars, US-educated Korean scholars and native English scholars were compared according to rhetorical organization. A generalized rhetorical scheme was used in analysis which was based on Graetz (1985) and Swales (1990): Background-Purpose-Method-Result-Conclusion. In addition, the use of conjunctions as a cohesive device was analyzed based on the categories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Analyses of the research paper abstracts showed that the majority of the abstracts included the purpose, method and result components. However, while approximately 70 percent of native English writers used research background in the abstract, only 26 percent of Korean national scholars did so. Regarding the use of conjunctions, Korean-national scholars overused and inappropriately used additive and temporal conjunctions. The US-educated Korean scholars showed similar patterns to the native English speakers. The findings obtained here imply that there is a need to provide academic writing instruction of abstracts to non-native scholars.

          지방사립대 영어영문학과 재학생들의 토익 성적에 미치는 영향요인에 대한 사례 연구

          In Korea, the TOEIC test is commonly used in the application for seeking jobs. Therefore, for university students, especially those who major in English, obtaining a high TOEIC score is a huge goal. The purpose of this study was to find out the influencing factors on the TOEIC scores for English majors at a university in Chungnam Province, Korea. A total of 99 students participated in this study. Data were collected by administering a questionnaire with 35 items. The research findings are as follows. More students take the official TOEIC test as their grades get higher and their scores rise significantly. More female students take the test and their scores were higher than male students. Also, the longer the preparation period the higher the score got. The influencing factors between the top 25% and the bottom 25% of the students were the number of tests taken and their goal scores. According to regression analysis, it is indicated that the number of times the students take the test is the predicting factor for the students' TOEIC scores. Based on the findings, it can be implied that motivation is important in TOEIC and different methods and strategies should be taught and used depending on the students' TOEIC scores.

          The purpose of this paper is to assess the level of awareness among Korean teachers of English toward Korea's new approach to Teaching English in English (TEE). The authors will specifically endeavor to understand the degree to which teachers are ready to implement the TEE initiative as well as what the requirements are to prepare further for the implementation of this new teaching approach. A survey was conducted on 280 secondary school teachers who are teaching English in middle or high schools throughout the country. The questionnaire consists of fourteen questions covering such areas as: the awareness among Korean teachers of English toward Korea's new approach to TEE, and the support system that teachers want to implement TEE effectively. The data, which was measured with the χ2 , T-test and ANOVA, using the statistical software, SPSS 12.0, show that both middle and high school teachers are in agreement about the necessity of TEE and that a more systematic method of teacher training is required. In most areas, middle and high school teachers responded similarly, although the middle school teachers responded more positively than the high school teachers regarding the application of TEE. The main reason for its failure is the lack of time which they had to prepare for TEE. Based on the data analysis, more research should be done in order for TEE to succeed, and finally improve the current situation of English teaching in Korean secondary schools.

          Teaching English as a Dominant International Language - A Case of Korean Elementary English Program

            The purpose of this paper is to present a qualitative case study on teaching English as an international language in Korean context. The researcher investigated the implementation process of the new elementary English program from the government to local schools to find out to what extent the symbolic value of English as an international language affect the implementation process of the elementary English program. The research result showed that the elementary teachers shared the different views of the status of English from those of government and the parents, and their differing perception of the role of English constantly affected their implementation efforts. The research findings also revealed that the public"s concern of English dominance in Korean educational system resulted in the government"s ‘comprised curriculum' by lowering the learning goals of the English program. The findings also indicated that the introduction of the elementary English program accelerated English dominance in both teacher and student culture. The question of how to resolve the conflict between acquiring English proficiency and its negative influence on Korean culture remains a complex issue in implementing the new elementary English program.

          The purpose of this study is to ascertain what is fundamental to successful Content-Based Instruction (CBI) in an Integrated English Language and Physical Education course. In order to achieve this goal, 164 students' majoring in a Physical Education related field completed a questionnaire. Result of a questionnaire allowed their awareness and perceived need of integrating English language and Physical Education tuition to be discovered. The study yielded results in the following areas: students are not well-informed about the benefits of integrated English Language and Physical Education learning; students think that classes like this may be effective in improving English Language skills; they are willing to apply this type of classes if there is any support even though they don't have enough knowledge on CBI; and that there is a distinct need of teacher training programs in this field. As a result, the Office of Education, schools and both English Language and Physical Education teachers need to liaise and cooperate with one another in order to rectify this problem. In addition to these outcomes, practical measures on how to improve Integrated English and Physical Education courses are recommended.

          The pros and cons exist in having native English teachers (NET) in Korean English classrooms. Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon Offices of Education officially announced that they're going to stop having NETs in secondary schools. Educational policies require gradual and predictable changes for the stability of curriculum operation at schools. To help make informed decisions on NET policy, this study took surveys of 127 middle and high school Korean English teachers across metropolitan cities, small and medium cities and rural areas, one teacher a school from 127 schools regarding the NET policy. The questionnaire consisted of 6 categories and 35 questions asking about satisfaction, contribution, in-class roles and their effectiveness. The results were quantified and took further interview where it needed qualitative supplementation. The findings were: Teachers in rural areas, middle schools and who don't practice TEE are more satisfied with NETs than teachers in other areas, high schools and who practice TEE in their English c1asses respectively. This result demands that the NET policy decisions should be differentiated by the different needs of NETs between areas, between school levels and between teachers with and without TEE ability.
