Vol.35 No.3

This paper aims to show that a study of literature has a place in cognitive linguistic studies, based on Cognitive Neural Network Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is widely pervaded in everyday language and behaviors, not just literary language. From this point of view, this paper aims to analyze the role of metaphors in one of Hemingway's novels. His metaphors demonstrate his belief that the world of nature and man is not static but dynamic and that the contraries implicit in this may cause conflicts and oppositions but constitute the organic elements of the whole universe. I try to examine the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system and cognitive neural network of The old Man and the Sea. As a result of the analysis, this research suggests that creative thinking in consilience raises questions as to our new theories. .

Vol.62 No.4

This paper describes conceptual blending theory and cognitive neuroscience, displaying that literary language settles down cognitive science and cognitive linguistics. The appearance of the cognitive linguistics set the stage for the consideration of metaphor. Metaphor pervades everyday language, thought and behavior, and not just poetic language. Robert Frost searches for his poetic materials in the surrounding nature and human society, and speaks through his poetic personae in plain and simple tone in his poetry his deep insights of human life. He exposes the difficulties and hazards we meet in the course of life without concealment, but creates the human figures who do not resign or surrender. Paul Churchland asserts the theory of representation from researches of cognitive neurology. Based on the representational theory, representations of our body and brain can be expressed as the positions of phase state spaces by neuron exercise. Also I raise questions based on both the theory of cognitive science and the conceptual theory. More widely, within the theory of cognitive science, I apply those theories to a poem titled “After Apple-Picking.” This approach provides that the critical idea in consilience has raised questions as to our fundamental principles and given them new ingenious theories.

Vol.32 No.4

This paper describes Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory, showing that a study of literature has a place in cognitive linguistic study. The advent of the cognitive linguistics laid foundations for the discussion of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson(1980) argue that metaphor is deeply pervaded in everyday language, thoughts and behaviors, and not just poetic language. They say that metaphor is a way of understanding and experiencing unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. I raise a general question of the theory of metaphor; more widely, within the theory of metaphor, I try to examine the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system of 'Nothing Gold Can Stay.' The results of this research suggests that critical thinking in consilience raised questions as to our fundamental principles and gave them new creative theories.

Vol.58 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to examine how a study of literature has a place within linguistic study. It is commonly thought that literary language is beyond ordinary language; that it is something essentially different, special, and higher, with extraordinary tools and techniques like metaphors, an instrument beyond the reach of someone who just talks. The advent of the cognitive linguistics laid foundations for the discussion of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is deeply pervaded in everyday language, thoughts and behaviors, and not just literary language. These cognitive linguists say that metaphor is a way of understanding and experiencing unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. I raise some general questions of the theory of metaphors; ’cognitive linguistic metaphor theory,’ subject-self metaphor more widely, within the cognitive science of philosophical ideas. Metaphor is a primary tool for understanding our world and ourselves. Entering into an engagement with powerful metaphors is grappling in an important way with what it means to have a human life. I try to analyze the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system of “The Color Purple.” As a result of the analysis, this research suggests that critical thinking in consilience of the studies should raise questions as to our fundamental principles and give them new creative theories.

Controlled Oxidation Level of Reduced Graphene Oxides and Its Effect on Thermoelectric Properties

2014 Macromolecular Research Vol.22 No.10

We investigated the thermoelectric properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a function of the oxidationlevel of rGO. rGO among graphene derivatives was selected as a thermoelectric material since rGO buckypaper shows low thermal conductivity due to the phonon scattering at the junctions of rGO nanoplatelets. The oxdationlevel of rGO was controlled by differing the amount of chemical reductant (hydrazine) used to reduce grapheneoxide (GO) to rGO, which correspondingly affected the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of rGO film. In this study, the maximum of figure of merit (ZT) was found to reach to 1.1×10-4 at 298 K for rGO reduced withthe hydrazine of 1000 μL. These results provide the first experimental evidence that the thermoelectric performanceof graphene and its derivative can be controlled by the oxidation level of graphitic nanoplatelets.

Vol.0 No.85

This paper describes conceptual metaphor theory and the cognitive neural network, showing that literary language has a great place in cognitive linguistics and cognitive science. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is widely pervaded in behaviors and thoughts as well as in everyday language and not just literary language. Paul Churchland suggests the theory of representation from results of cognitive neural network. According to the representational theory, our representations of our world and our selves can be represented as the locations of phase state spaces with the movements of the neurons. This paper attempts to analyze the role of representations and metaphors in Robert Frost's poetry. I raise some problems based on both the conceptual Metaphor theory and the theory of cognitive neural network, I try to analyze cognitive theories to a poem titled “The Silken Tent.” Therefore, this research suggests that critical ideas in consilience of the studies should raise questions as to our fundamental principles and give them new creative theories. .

Vol.38 No.1

This paper describes quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, showing that a study of literature has a place in cognitive metaphor study. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) argue that metaphor is a tool so widely pervaded in everyday life that we utilize it automatically and unconsciously with so little effort that we scarcely notice it. Also metaphor in quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity changes not only the way of describing particles and movement but also the view point about scientific phenomena. On the contrary, these metaphysical phenomena shook the cognitive framework of mankind. From this point of view, this paper aims to study the role of metaphors in Thoreau’s Walden. I try to examine quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity in Walden. This study suggests that creative thinking in consilience raises questions as to our fundamental principles and gives them new theories.

Vol.53 No.4

The purpose of this study is to show that a study of literature has a place within the range of linguistic studies. It is commonly thought that poetic language is beyond ordinary language; that it is something essentially different, special, heigher, with extraordinary tools and techniques like metaphors, an instrument beyond the reach of someone who just talks. The advent of the cognitive linguistics laid foundations for the discussion of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson(1980) argue that metaphor is deeply pervaded in everyday language, thoughts and behaviors, and not just poetic language. These cognitive linguistics say that metaphor is a way of understanding and experiencing unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. Metaphor is necessary not only for our imagination but also for our reason. Great poets can speak to us because they use the modes of thought we all possess. I pose a general question of the theory of metaphor; ‘Conceptual Blending Theory(Turner and Fauconnier, 1998)’ and more widely, within the theory of metaphor, I try to examine the metaphoric system of Robert Frost’s poetry. As a result of analyzing Robert Frost’s poetry, “Never Again Would Birds Song Be the Same”, contrary to the general beliefs, a literal study of literary texts is claimed to be highly interrelated with cognitive linguistics.
