Vol.32 No.4

This paper describes Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory, showing that a study of literature has a place in cognitive linguistic study. The advent of the cognitive linguistics laid foundations for the discussion of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson(1980) argue that metaphor is deeply pervaded in everyday language, thoughts and behaviors, and not just poetic language. They say that metaphor is a way of understanding and experiencing unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. I raise a general question of the theory of metaphor; more widely, within the theory of metaphor, I try to examine the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system of 'Nothing Gold Can Stay.' The results of this research suggests that critical thinking in consilience raised questions as to our fundamental principles and gave them new creative theories.

Vol.58 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to examine how a study of literature has a place within linguistic study. It is commonly thought that literary language is beyond ordinary language; that it is something essentially different, special, and higher, with extraordinary tools and techniques like metaphors, an instrument beyond the reach of someone who just talks. The advent of the cognitive linguistics laid foundations for the discussion of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is deeply pervaded in everyday language, thoughts and behaviors, and not just literary language. These cognitive linguists say that metaphor is a way of understanding and experiencing unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. I raise some general questions of the theory of metaphors; ’cognitive linguistic metaphor theory,’ subject-self metaphor more widely, within the cognitive science of philosophical ideas. Metaphor is a primary tool for understanding our world and ourselves. Entering into an engagement with powerful metaphors is grappling in an important way with what it means to have a human life. I try to analyze the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system of “The Color Purple.” As a result of the analysis, this research suggests that critical thinking in consilience of the studies should raise questions as to our fundamental principles and give them new creative theories.

Vol.34 No.3

It is commonly thought that metaphor is something that belongs only to poets and their works. The advent of cognitive linguistics laid the foundations for the discussion of metaphor. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) say that metaphor is so ordinary a tool that we use it unconsciously and automatically, with so little effort that we hardly notice it. Metaphor is an integral part of our ordinary everyday thought and language. It is necessary not only for our imagination but also for our reason. These cognitive linguists also say that metaphor is a way of understanding and experiencing unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. From this point of view, this paper aims to analyze the role of metaphors in Robert Frost's poetry. I raise some questions based on both the conceptual metaphor theory of cognitive linguistics and the theory of physics. More widely, within the theory of relativity, I try to apply those theories to a poem titled “A Leaf-Treader.” As a result of this analysis, this research suggests that critical thinking in consilience raised questions as to our fundamental principles and gave them new creative theories.

Vol.35 No.3

This paper aims to show that a study of literature has a place in cognitive linguistic studies, based on Cognitive Neural Network Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is widely pervaded in everyday language and behaviors, not just literary language. From this point of view, this paper aims to analyze the role of metaphors in one of Hemingway's novels. His metaphors demonstrate his belief that the world of nature and man is not static but dynamic and that the contraries implicit in this may cause conflicts and oppositions but constitute the organic elements of the whole universe. I try to examine the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system and cognitive neural network of The old Man and the Sea. As a result of the analysis, this research suggests that creative thinking in consilience raises questions as to our new theories. .

Vol.60 No.2

This paper describes Theory of Relativity and Conceptual Blending Theory, showing that literary researches have a place in cognitive linguistic study. These cognitive linguists claim that metaphor is a method of experiencing and understanding unfamiliar concepts via familiar ones. In this study, I raise some questions of the theory of physics and metaphors, ‘conceptual blending theory’ and more widely within the theory of relativity. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to review the cognitive linguistic metaphoric system of Virginia Woolf’s novel, To The Lighthouse. The nature in Wool’s novels is not beautiful and friendly to a man, but more indifferent and hostile to him. In this ambivalent nature, a man confronts conflicts with nature and feels a sense of threats or isolation from nature. In a modern world, human can not but feel a sense of alienation and confrontation between man and man as well as man and nature. There exist various forms of invisible barriers between time and others in To The Lighthouse. Time plays an important role in making us choose the patterns of our lives. As a consequence of this analysis, this study claims that a critical idea in consilience raised questions as to our fundamental principles and gave them fresh creative theories.

Vol.0 No.85

This paper describes conceptual metaphor theory and the cognitive neural network, showing that literary language has a great place in cognitive linguistics and cognitive science. Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is widely pervaded in behaviors and thoughts as well as in everyday language and not just literary language. Paul Churchland suggests the theory of representation from results of cognitive neural network. According to the representational theory, our representations of our world and our selves can be represented as the locations of phase state spaces with the movements of the neurons. This paper attempts to analyze the role of representations and metaphors in Robert Frost's poetry. I raise some problems based on both the conceptual Metaphor theory and the theory of cognitive neural network, I try to analyze cognitive theories to a poem titled “The Silken Tent.” Therefore, this research suggests that critical ideas in consilience of the studies should raise questions as to our fundamental principles and give them new creative theories. .

Vol.0 No.90

This paper explores telosemantic metaphor, showing that poetic language has an excellent place in cognitive linguistics and cognitive science. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) show that metaphor is an implement so ordinary that we use it unconsciously, suffuse our ideas, no matter what we are thinking about. Paul Churchland (1989) suggests that representations are states whose biological function is to guide behavior in ways appropriate to such conditions. Teleosemantics offers a powerful framework that promises to explain the nature of representation in nonrepresentational terms. It might seem unlikely that a simple appeal to biological functionality can account for the significance of truth. This paper takes sight to analyze the role of metaphors and teleosemantics in Robert Frost's “October.” In addition, this study suggests that critical thoughts in consilience raised questions as to our basic principles and gave them new ingenious theories.

Vol.31 No.1

This paper describes conceptual metaphor theory(CMT), showing that a study of literature has a place in linguistic study. Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature. Great poets can speak to us because they use the modes of thought we all possess. To understand the nature and value of poetic creativity requires us to understand the ordinary ways we think. Metaphor is a primary tool for understanding our world and ourselves, entering into an engagement with powerful poetic metaphors is grappling in an important way with what it means to have a human life. I pose a general question of the theory of metaphor, conceptual metaphor theory and more widely, within cognitive neurobiology, I try to examine the conceptual metaphoric system of Robert Frost's poetry, “Birches”. As a result of analyzing, this study suggests that a literal study of literary texts and cognitive linguistics are closely related.
