The double anti-aggregation with aspirin and clopidogrel has been used as background therapy in most patients after coronary stent placement. However, isolated cases of thrombocytopenia induced by each of these drugs, only rarely have been described, particularly when associated with clopidogrel. Currently, there is no consensus on alternative therapeutic strategies in cases of patients who had to suspend this type of drug because of thrombocytopenia after coronary stent placement. According to studies on the effi cacy and safety of this drug, ticagrelor has recently been appointed as antiplatelet therapy with aspirin in cases of percutaneous coronary intervention, as it demonstrated faster and more effective early inhibition of platelet aggregation compared with clopidogrel. This is the case of thrombocytopenia induced by clopidogrel after coronary stent placement following an acute coronary syndrome with ST segment elevation. We also intend to discuss alternative therapy adopted, as well as analysis and comparison of the cases published on the same topic.

Phytate is not only an unavailable source of phosphorus (P) for broilers but it also acts as an anti-nutrient, reducing protein and mineral absorption, increasing endogenous losses and reducing broiler performance. The objective of this study was to investigate the anti-nutritional effects of phytate by including high levels of phytase in diets not severely limited in available P. A total of 768 male Arbor Acres broilers were distributed in six treatments of eight replicate pens of 16 birds each consisting of a positive control diet (PC), positive control with 500 FTU/kg phytase, negative control (NC) diet with lower available P and calcium (Ca) levels and the same NC diet with 500, 1,000 or 1,500 FTU/kg phytase. Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and mortality were determined at 21 and 35 d of age while foot ash was determined in four birds per pen at 21 d of age. FI, FCR and foot ash where not affected by the lower mineral diets at 21 d of age nor by the enzyme inclusion but broilers fed lower Ca and available P diets had lower BWG. At 35 d of age no difference was observed between broilers fed the positive or NC diets but broilers fed 500, 1,000 and 1,500 FTU/kg on top of the NC diet had better FCR than broilers fed the positive control diet. When compared to birds fed a diet adequate in P, birds fed the same diet included with 500, 1,000 and 1,500 FTU/kg of phytase in marginally deficient available P and Ca diets had an improvement of performance. These results support the concept that hydrolysing phytate and reducing the anti-nutritional effects of phytate improves bird performance on marginally deficient diets that were not covering the P requirement of birds.
The continuous-discontinuous Galerkin method applied to crack propagation

The discontinuous Galerkin method (DGM) has become widely used as it possesses several qualities, such as a natural ability to dealing with discontinuities. DGM has its major success related to fluid mechanics. Its major importance is the ability to deal with discontinuities and still provide high order of approximation. That is an important advantage when simulating cracking propagation. No remeshing is necessary during the propagation, since the crack path follows the interface of elements. However, DGM comes with the drawback of an increased number of degrees of freedom when compared to the classical continuous finite element method. Thus, it seems a natural approach to combine them in the same simulation obtaining the advantages of both methods. This paper proposes the application of the combined continuous-discontinuous Galerkin method (CDGM) to crack propagation. An important engineering problem is the simulation of crack propagation in concrete structures. The problem is characterized by discontinuities that evolve throughout the domain. Crack propagation is simulated using CDGM. Discontinuous elements are placed in regions with discontinuities and continuous elements elsewhere. The cohesive zone model describes the fracture process zone where softening effects are expressed by cohesive zones in the interface of elements. Two numerical examples demonstrate the capacities of CDGM. In the first example, a plain concrete beam is submitted to a three-point bending test. Numerical results are compared to experimental data from the literature. The second example deals with a full-scale ground slab, comparing the CDGM results to numerical and experimental data from the literature.

Purpose The development of nanomaterials that are capable of recognizing disease-specific biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity is related to several advances in the field of nanomedicine. Furthermore, the targeted delivery of anticancer agents to tumor tissues enhances their efficiency and reduces their toxic side effects. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are nanostructured materials, analog to carbon nanotubes, which present good biocompatibility and morphology suitable for tumor cell internalization. CREKA is a pentapeptide that has a high affinity to fibrin, a protein found in the new tumor vessels in the early stages of metastasis and in thrombosis regions. Methods In this study BNNTs were chemically functionalized with the peptide CREKA, and this system was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Results After the mentioned chemical steps, the FTIR analysis shows an organic phase related to the CREKA, TGA indicates that about 10% of the peptide is firmly attached to BNNT surface. In addition, the radiolabeling process was successful, achieving the purity required for the biodistribution study. In vivo experiments showed that a considerable amount of BNNTCREKA was accumulated at the tumor and metastasis sites. Conclusion The present results indicate an effective targeting of the system to tumor and metastasis sites. Further studies can reveal potential applications of functionalized BNNTs in cancer treatment.

Multiple myeloma is the second most frequent hematologic tumour and represents about 1% of all tumours, with a medium diagnosis age of 70 years. Usually, it presents as anaemia, bone pain, hyperkalemia e kidney failure. Infection susceptibility is most obvious about 2-3 months after the initial diagnosis and after chemotherapy, but it is rarely described as being a form of acute presentation. In this article, we present the clinical case of a patient with initial diagnosis of Streptoccus pneumoniae pneumonia, that then turned into a diagnosis of smoldering myeloma. It is important to consider the possibility of multiple myeloma in middle-aged patients, previously healthy, that present with acute bacterial infection, without an evident predisposing factor.

Evaluation was made of friction stir welded joints, identifying conditions that resulted in satisfactory welded joints free fromdefects and with microstructural characteristics that provided good mechanical properties. Microstructural characterizationand cooling curve analysis of the joints with lower and higher heat inputs evidenced deformation below and above the nonrecrystallizationtemperature (T nr ) and dynamic recrystallization during microstructural evolution. Microscopy analysesshowed acicular ferrite, bainitic ferrite, and coalesced bainite microstructures in the stir zone of the cold weld (lower heatinput), while the stir zone of the hot weld (higher heat input) contained bainitic ferrite, acicular ferrite, coalesced bainite, martensite, and dispersed carbides. Granular bainite and dispersed carbides were observed in all the heat aff ected zones. Analysis of the microstructural transformations, together with the thermal history of the joints, showed that the variable thathad the greatest infl uence on the morphology of the bainite (granular bainite/bainitic ferrite) was the deformation temperature.

Tetracosapolyenoic fatty acids (TPA), namely tetracosapentaenoic (24:5n-6) and tetracosahexaenoic (24:6n-3) acids, are chemotaxonomic biomarkers of octocorals (Cnidaria, Octocorallia) in the marine environment. The present study confirms the occurrence of TPA on a marine non-cnidarian taxon, the nudibranch mollusc Armina maculata. This discovery is explained by the specialized feeding regime (stenophagy) of this sea slug that preys upon the octocoral Veretillum cynomorium. The prevalence of 24:5n-6 and 24:6n-3 in the body of A. maculata was demonstrated through the analysis of specimens starved for 30 days in captivity. Since the time frame is superior to the residence time of ingested octocorals, the present findings provide empirical evidence that the reported TPA are allocated from nudibranch tissues. Here we found support for previous claims that the presence of TPA in the marine tree of life is not restricted to its lower branches, as stenophagous trophic interactions may allow its transfer to or posterior biosynthesis in more evolved taxa.

This study aims to present a hydraulic transitory study as MOC applications for solving the Saint-Venant equations in two case studies: 1) in a penstock of a small hydropower system as a simple pipeline in the case of valve-closure in the downstream boundary with a reservoir in the upstream boundary; and 2) for discharge propagation into a channel by velocity and depth of the flow channel along space evaluation. The proposed methodology by Chaudry [5] concerning the development of hydrodynamic models was used. The obtained results for first and second case study has been confirmed that MOC numerical approach is useful for several engineering purposes, including cases of hydraulic transients and discharge propagation in hydraulic systems.
