Haiku, Zen, and Wanaki: The Hybridized Poetics of Gerald Vizenor
Vol.10 No.3
This paper explores how Anishinaabe writer and postmodern critic Gerald Vizenor engages with creating animated words that concern trans-cultural conversations among different literary traditions. Both of Vizenor’s fictional and poetic works show an attempt to negotiate between Japanese culture and indigenous oral tradition and even between Western thoughts and indigenous philosophy. This is possible because Vizenor’s works represent the process in which his animated words, like native trickster figures, move beyond any fixed identity or time and space, actively participating in language games. While focusing on Vizenor’s theoretical commitment, this paper deals with Vizenor’s novel Dead Voices (1992), where Vizenor’s fictional device, Wanaki game, represents how trickster figures from Anishinaabe oral tradition work, and analyzes some of his early poems which concern the themes of Haiku based on Zen philosophy and Ojibwe dream songs. In demonstrating how such a hybridized voice is heard in Vizenorian poetry, “The Balcony,” one of Vizenor’s first serious poems is particularly compared to “On the road,” one of poems by Matsuo Basho, the Haiku master.
Vol.26 No.3
In item response theory (IRT), the use of marginal maximum likelihood (MML) and Bayesian modal (BM) methods for item parameter estimation requites the specification of a prior distribution for the ability variable. With multiple-choice (MC) tests, Kim (2012) found that in MML/BM estimation of item parameter; the way of specifying the prior ability distribution as the estimate of underlying distribution (i.e., concurrent estimation of item parameters and underlying distribution) outperformed or peformed equally to the way of specifying the prior ability distribution as a standard normal N(0, 1) distribution. As a follow-up study of Kim (2012), this paper attempted to verify through simulations that the previous findings from Me tests should be generalized to mixed-format tests consisting of MC items and constructed-response (CR) items. The PARSCALE program was used to analyze MC and CR items via the 3-paramerer logistic (3PL) and generalized partial credit (GPO models, respectively. The simulation factors considered include type of underlying ability distributions (normal, positively skewed, and negatively skewed), test type by the IRT model used OPL, GPC, and 3PL+GPC), test difficulty (easy, moderately difficult, and difficult), and sample size (500 and 2,000). As found in Kim's study, the way of concurrently estimating the underlying distribution along with item parameters outperformed or peformed equally to the way of specifying the prior distribution as a N(0, 1) in accurate estimation of item parameters with mixed-format tests.

Abstract

We investigated the carrier transport mechanism at Al/n-type 4H-SiC contacts. As-deposited Al exhibited the good ohmic behavior, while the thermal annealing leads the significant degradation of contact properties, i.e., the specific contact resistance was 3.97 × 10−3, 4.1 × 10−2, and 0.153 Ω cm2 for the as-deposited, 200 and 400 °C-annealed condition, respectively. The ohmic mechanism of as-deposited contact could be explained by field emission model, yielding a tunneling parameter of 0.44 eV, i.e., the ohmic behavior is due to the tunneling through the thin barrier. The degradation of ohmic contact after thermal annealing caused by the formation of oxide layer between the Al and SiC.

Highlights

We proposed an use of aluminum as a contact metal to form ohmic contact without thermal annealing process.

The Al/n-type 4H-SiC contact showed an ohmic behavior without thermal annealing.

The as-deposited contact could be explained by field emission model.

The thermal annealing led to the degradation of ohmic behavior due to the generation of interfacial oxide.

Body, Gender, and Power: Reading the Illusion of a Subversive Potential in Fight Club
Vol.39 No.1
In David Fincher’s 1999 film Fight Club, destructive totalitarian violence and vexing gender issues are intertwined with each other. Men in Fight Club and Project Mayhem, quasi-anarchist organizations that use violence and terrorism in the film, resist the late-capitalist society. Their radical actions are based on a firm belief that they can recover their (lost) masculinity, as the film represents through Jack and Tyler, the protagonists equating the late-capitalist society to something feminine. In Fincher’s film, the restoration of masculinity as resistance against society is paradoxical as it depicts men as victims of the feminized society, while making them subject to their own violence based on the idea of masculinity. In particular, through Marla Singer, the only major female character, Fight Club’s representation of men’s homosocial bonding unwittingly highlights and strengthens stereotypes of heterosexuality.
The Politics of the Phallus : A Lacanian Reading of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises
Vol.60 No.1
This paper examines how the narrative of Jake Barnes, the narrator/protagonist of The Sun Also Rises, exploits Robert Cohn, a Jewish character, as a psychological backdrop for his idea of masculinity in terms of Lacanian psychoanalysis. Despite his genital wound from the First Word War, Jake attempts to redeem his masculinity by replacing the presence of the penis with that of the phallus. Throughout his dominant narrative, Jake is focused on the various representations of the symbolic power of the phallus to compensate for his “lost” penis and thus defend his masculinity. Simply, Jake embodies the phallus, while Cohn embodies the penis. In his anti-Semitic portrayal of Cohn, Jake implicitly alludes to Cohn’s penis, a sign of the Other, which evokes the context of Jewish circumcision. Particularly, the narrator/protagonist links the image of Cohn to that of the steers in bullfighting scenes. The defeat of the steers indicate the inferiority of Cohn as a Jew with a circumcised penis. In contrast, by identifying himself with bullfighters, especially Pedro Romero, Jake, a white male subject, succeeds in marginalizing Cohn and in rescuing himself from his impotence.

Abstract

Isothermal (vapor+liquid) equilibrium data for the binary mixtures of (propylene oxide+ethanol) and (propylene oxide+1-propanol) were measured using a static apparatus at three different temperatures ranging from (303.15 to 333.15)K at an interval of 15K. The measured data were correlated using Peng–Robinson–Stryjek–Vera equation of state (PRSV EOS) combined with van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule for the vapor phase and with Wong-Sandler mixing rule involving a non-random two liquid (NRTL) model, universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) model and Wilson model for the liquid phase.
