Since many people in Korea know more than one language, bilingual aphasia is an important line of research in clinical and theoretical neurolinguistics. Nowadays we meet many people who speak other languages along with Korean, who are immigrants from foreign countries, especially from China. Differential recovery of language affected by an aphasic deficit is documented. In the present work, we introduced a patient with bilingual aphasia who showed different recovery patterns in Korean and Chinese. A 66-year-old man was presented with language disturbance and right hemiplegia. On past medical history, he had received a hematoma evacuation through burr-hole due to left basal ganglia hemorrhage. After the event, he showed nearly global aphasia in Korean, but he showed minimally preserved language function on comprehension and fluency in Chinese. This result suggests that aphasia in bilingual subject may show different pat-terns of recovery between two languages.
2003 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.46 No.7
Objective : To find out wheather the substance P takes part in the pain mediating system of uterus, and to ascertain the role of substance P in the hypersensitivity of hypogastric nerve to bradykinin during the uterine inflammation. Methods : The uterus has two sensory innervations, which are the hypogastric nerve and the pelvic nerve. Since the hypogastric nerve is known to show increased sensitivity to bradykinin, a pain mediator, when the uterus is in inflammatory state, the hypogastric nerve recording was done for electrophysiological study of uterine pain-mediating mechanism in female SD rats (200-250 g). NK1 receptor antagonist (L-703,606) was injected through uterine artery before injecting bradykinin while uterus was under inflammation. Results : The NK-1 receptor antagonist (L-703,606) decreased the spontaneous nerve impulse during inflammation, and it also decreased the hypersensitivity of the hypogastric nerve to bradykinin during the uterine inflammation. Conclusion : Substance P mediates the pain sense of hypogastric nerve, and it also plays a role in increased sensitivity of hypogastric nerve to bradykinin while uterus is in inflammatory state.

<P>Aberrant DNA methylation is a potential diagnostic marker for complex diseases, such as cancer. With the increase in the number of genes known to exhibit disease-associated aberrant methylation, the need for accurate multiplex assays for quantifying DNA methylation has increased. Methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA) is one method that has been highlighted in this context. However, two limitations make the custom design of MS-MLPA assays impractical: the need for long probes containing stuffer sequences and a reliance on only one restriction enzyme. Here, we developed a variation of MS-MLPA that employs a simpler probe-design process. To overcome the above-mentioned limitations, we used stuffer-free MS-MLPA probes that are subsequently analyzed using high-resolution capillary electrophoresis-based single-strand conformational polymorphism (CE-SSCP) instead of conventional length-dependent CE. Moreover, multiple methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes (<I>Hha</I>I, <I>Hpa</I>II, and <I>Aci</I>I) were used simultaneously; thus, probes satisfying desired criteria were available for all targets. Using this assay concept, we analyzed 17 genes associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. Our results showed that the custom-designed assay based on MS-MLPA-CE-SSCP provided robust multiplex quantification of DNA methylation levels.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>We demonstrate a robust and simple method for the quantification of DNA methylation by using stuffer-free methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and high resolution conformation-sensitive separation. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c3an01178j'> </P>
