Vol.23 No.18

Objectives Many studies have examined the relationship between problematic smartphone use and subjective well-being, but studies on the relationship between problematic internet gaming and subjective well-being are lacking. Therefore, this study selected problematic internet gaming, self-control, problematic smartphone use, and subjective well-being as the main factors, and examined the effects of problematic internet gaming on subjective well-being through self-control and problematic smartphone use in adolescents using a multiple-parallel mediation model. This study aims to broaden the understanding of adolescents' problematic internet gaming and to provide a basis for developing programs to resolve the dysfunctions caused by problematic internet gaming, organizing preventive education, and establishing counseling stradegies considering the level of problematic internet gaming. Methods The survey period was July 13-27, 2022. A questionnaire was distributed to 400 male and female middle, high school, and university students in Seoul to measure demographic variables and major variables such as problematic internet gaming, self-control, problematic smartphone use, and subjective well-being, and data were collected and analyzed using a multiple-parallel mediation model. Results Problematic internet gaming had a significant negative effect on self-control and a significant positive effect on problematic smartphone use. Furthermore, self-control had a significant positive effect on subjective well-being and problematic internet gaming and problematic smartphone use had a significant negative effect on subjective well-being. Finally, problematic internet gaming were statistically significant in the path leading to subjective well-being through self-control and problematic smartphone use, confirming the multiple-parallel mediation effect. Conclusions In order to increase adolescents’ subjective well-being, it is necessary to explore educational options that foster a sense of self-control. In addition, excessive smartphone use for gaming has a negative impact on subjective well-being, so it is necessary to provide a variety of alternative activities and ways to play instead of using a smartphone.

Vol.14 No.5

The current study examined the effects of interpersonal characteristics (social skill, social support, and loneliness) on problematic internet use, and the mediating role of preference for online social interaction between interpersonal characteristics and problematic internet use. Four hundred nine college students in Daegu province participated in this study. Results of the current study indicated that (1) social skill influenced problematic internet use through the mediation of preference for online social interaction; (2) social support influenced preference for online social interaction and problematic internet use through the mediation of loneliness; (3) loneliness not only influenced problematic internet use through the mediation of preference for online social interaction, but also had effect on problematic internet use directly. These results showed that the deficiency of social skill might cause the low level of perceived social support, which influence loneliness, finally have effect on preference for online social interaction and problematic internet use. The current study provides suggestions for intervention strategies for interpersonally maladaptive college students with problematic internet use.

      • Associations of body weight perception and weight control behaviors with problematic internet use among Korean adolescents

Park, Subin,Lee, Yeeun Elsevier 2017 Psychiatry Research Vol.251 No.-

Abstract

We examined the association of body mass index (BMI), body weight perception, and weight control behaviors with problematic Internet use in a nationwide sample of Korean adolescents. Cross-sectional data from the 2010 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey collected from 37,041 boys and 33,655 girls in middle- and high- schools (grades 7–12) were analyzed. Participants were classified into groups based on BMI (underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese), body weight perception (underweight, normal weight, and overweight), and weight control behavior (no weight control behavior, appropriate weight control behavior, inappropriate weight control behavior). The risk of problematic Internet use was assessed with the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form. Both boys and girls with inappropriate weight control behavior were more likely to have problematic Internet use. Underweight, overweight, and obese boys and girls were more likely to have problematic Internet use. For both boys and girls, subjective perception of underweight and overweight were positively associated with problematic Internet use. Given the negative effect of inappropriate weight control behavior, special attention needs to be given to adolescents’ inappropriate weight control behavior, and an educational intervention for adolescents to control their weight in healthy ways is needed.

Highlights

Being underweight and obese was positively associated with problematic Internet use.

Subjective perceptions of being underweight and overweight were positively associated with problematic Internet use.

Inappropriate weight control was positively associated, but appropriate weight control was negatively associated with problematic Internet use.

The Effects of Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on the Improvement of Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents with Problematic Internet Use

        Sang-Hyun Kim,Hyeon-Woo Yim,Sun-Jin Jo,Kyu-In Jung,Kina Lee,Min-Hyeon Park 대한소아청소년정신의학회 2018 소아청소년정신의학 Vol.29 No.2

Objectives: The overuse of the Internet among adolescents has increased dramatically in recent years, leading to pathological or problematic Internet use. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for the treatment of problematic Internet use, particularly for adolescents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of group CBT for problematic Internet use in adolescents. Methods: A total of 17 patients aged 12–17 years who met Young’s diagnostic questionnaire criteria of problematic Internet use participated in a school-based eight-session group CBT program. The level of problematic Internet use among participating students was measured using Young’s Internet Addiction Scale (IAS). Depression and anxiety levels were evaluated using the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), respectively. Each construct was assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and at a one-month follow-up visit. Statistical significance was based on a p-value of <0.05. Results: Immediately after the program, the IAS, CDI, and State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) scores were significantly lower than before the program. At the one-month follow-up assessment, the IAS scores remained low, and the CDI and SAI scores were even lower than immediately after the program. Conclusion: Group CBT was effective for adolescents with problematic Internet use, and was also demonstrated to improve depression and anxiety.

Adolescent Screen Use: Problematic Internet Use and the Impact of Gender

        Sheila Rejane Niskier,Lindsey A. Snaychuk,Hyoun S. Kim,Thiago T. da Silva,Maria Sylvia de Souza Vitalle,Hermano Tavares 대한신경정신의학회 2024 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.21 No.1

Objective The relationship between screen use and problematic internet use (PIU; i.e., internet addiction) amongst adolescents has not been sufficiently explored. Further, there is even less research on how gender is associated with this relationship. The goal of the study was to examine adolescent screen use, PIU, and its impact on day-to-day routines of adolescents. Methods Participants were recruited from an outpatient pediatric clinic in São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 180 adolescents completed questionnaires related to their screen use, extracurricular activities, and symptoms of PIU. Univariate and multivariate statistics were used to determine correlates and predictors of PIU, and to explore gender differences. Results A total of 26.1% of adolescents met the criteria for PIU. There were no significant differences between boys and girls in PIU severity. However, there were significant gender differences in preferred use of the Internet, with boys being more likely to access the Internet to play video games (odds ratio [OR]=27.1) and girls being more likely to socialize with friends (OR=4.51). PIU severity increased proportionally to the number of hours of use of all screen devices with moderate-to-large effect sizes (η2=0.060–0.157). Using screens during meals and missing extracurricular activities were both associated with PIU.Conclusion Though gender was not associated with PIU, both excessive use of screen devices during meals and neglect of offline extracurriculars activities were identified as risk factors for PIU. Prevention measures should consider the impact of gender and associated patterns of motivation and Internet use.

Associations of Internet Use with Oral Hygiene Based on National Youth Risk Behavior Survey

Vol.29 No.1

Objectives: To investigate the association of problematic Internet use with oral health behaviors and oral health status in a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2010 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (73238 Korean adolescents; mean age 15.06±1.75 years; age range, 12–18 years) were used. Problematic Internet use was measured using the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess oral health behaviors and oral health status of adolescents. Results: Problematic Internet users were less likely to brush their teeth frequently [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=0.59; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.56–0.63] and at school after lunch (AOR=0.89; 95% CI=0.83–0.94) as well as more likely to perceive their oral health to be poorer (AOR=1.63, 95% CI=1.54–1.72) and experience oral symptoms (AOR=1.75, 95% CI=1.65–1.86) compared to usual Internet users. Conclusion: The study results indicate that problematic Internet use may adversely affect the oral health of Korean adolescents. Thus, oral health screening and Internet-based education are needed for adolescents experiencing problematic Internet use.

The Relationship of Sexual Abuse with Self-Esteem, Depression, and Problematic Internet Use in Korean Adolescents

2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.3

The association of sexual victimization with self-esteem, depression, and problematic internet use was examined in Korean adolescents. A total of 695 middle and high school students were recruited (413 boys, 282 girls, mean age, 14.06±1.37 years). The participants were administered the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF), Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and Young’s Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The associations between sexual abuse and the level of self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and problematic internet use were analyzed. Adolescents who had experienced sexual abuse showed lower self-esteem, more depressive symptoms, and greater problematic internet use compared with adolescents who had not experienced sexual abuse. In the path model, sexual abuse predicted lower self-esteem (β=-0.11; 95% CI=-0.20, -0.04; p=0.009), which predicted higher depressive symptoms (β=-0.34; 95% CI=-0.40, -0.27; p=0.008). Depressive symptoms predicted problematic internet use in a positive way (β=0.23; 95% CI=0.16-0.29; p=0.013). Sexual abuse also predicted problematic internet use directly (β=0.20; 95% CI=0.12–0.27; p=0.012). The results of the present study indicate that sexually abused adolescents had a higher risk of depression and problematic internet use. For sexually abused adolescents, programs aimed at raising self-esteem and preventing internet addiction, as well as mental health screening, are needed.

Vol.- No.82

This study was conducted to find out whether the self-care for children in single-parent families increases the likelihoods of problematic internet/smartphone use. Logistic regression analysis was performed by selecting 1,100 single-parent households with elementary school students from the raw data of the 2021 Single-Parent Family Survey. Analysis results showed that single-parent familes with elementary school students facing self-care are associated with problems in internet/smartphone uses. The time of the self-care for children also affected the problematic use of internet/smartphone; that is, compared to children without self-care time, the risk of problematic use was significantly higher in children who were in a 1-hour self-care, and even higher in a 2-hour self-care. In addition, the risk of internet/smartphone use problems was higher for children from sinlge-father families than single-mother families. Moreover, the risk of problematic use was positively associated with the parent's job(i.e. being self-employed) and residential region(i.e. the metropolitan area). On the other hand, the risk decreased when the parent has a college degree or higher, or the family has the larger number of children. Based on the analysis results, this study emphasised that public after-school care programmes as well as parental education need to be strengthened in order to prevent problematic internet/smartphone use for children.
