Impact of Human Mobility on Social Networks

Dashun Wang,Chaoming Song 한국통신학회 2015 Journal of communications and networks Vol.17 No.2

Mobile phone carriers face challenges from three synergistic dimensions: Wireless, social, and mobile. Despite significant advances that have been made about social networks and human mobility, respectively, our knowledge about the interplay between two layers remains largely limited, partly due to the difficulty in obtaining large-scale datasets that could offer at the same time social and mobile information across a substantial population over an extended period of time. In this paper, we take advantage of a massive, longitudinal mobile phone dataset that consists of human mobility and social network information simultaneously, allowing us to explore the impact of human mobility patterns on the underlying social network. We find that human mobility plays an important role in shaping both local and global structural properties of social network. In contrast to the lack of scale in social networks and human movements, we discovered a characteristic distance in physical space between 10 and 20 km that impacts both local clustering and modular structure in social network. We also find a surprising distinction in trajectory overlap that segments social ties into two categories. Our results are of fundamental relevance to quantitative studies of human behavior, and could serve as the basis of anchoring potential theoretical models of human behavior and building and developing new applications using social and mobile technologies.

2012 Proceedings of KIIT Conference Vol.2012 No.5

In this paper, we propose a social network system based on smartphone using a user’s context. The proposed system stores information of configured node on a pre-designed database, then connects to a social network server which forms a tree structure using the stored node information. After connecting to the server, a user can share their contents with others based on his current situation in a social network. By using this system, students set their timetable for classes, then a group of students who attend the same class at the same time can share information with each other. This is a distinct difference against the existing social network. In experiment, we evaluated the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed user context social network.

Machines, cities and bodies have been evolved together for a long time, and the recent development of information and communication technologies has transformed cities and bodies into new forms. Concerned with the relations between machines, cities and bodies, this paper explores how mobile networks are related with the physical space of the city and the psychological space of the body. The paper is organised into four main sections. First, it provides a theoretical review of the ways in which mobile networks transform urban spaces and human bodies. Secondly, it explains the generation of mobile networks through technological and institutional changes in Korea. Thirdly, it looks at the socio-spatial scales and time-space landscapes of mobile networks in relation to mobile users’ motions and practices in their everyday lives. Finally, it attends to the ways in which mobile networks involve the production of paradoxical emotional spaces in relation to mobile users’ emotions and desires to be dis/connected with mobile networks.

Social-aware mobile data offloading algorithm through small cell backhaul network: Direct and indirect user influence perspectives

        Cheon, Hye-Rim,Kim, Jae-Hyun Elsevier Science Publishers B.V. 2019 Computer networks Vol.165 No.-

Abstract

Mobile data offloading is a promising solution to mitigate the explosive increasing traffic load in a mobile network operator (MNO)’s core network, where the MNO can deliver the mobile traffic without traversing the core network. Most of all, the social networking traffic has increased sharply due to the proliferation of online social networking services (SNSs), such as Facebook and Instagram. Thus, an effective mobile data offloading algorithm that considers the social context needs to be developed. In this paper, exploiting the social context from two perspectives, we propose the model to estimate the application selection probability considering a direct influence by each user and indirect influence by other users. Based on this, we propose the mobile data offloading algorithm considering the social context via small cell backhaul network, in order to maximize the quality of service (QoS) of a user and reduce the core network load of an MNO to the maximum. The results of the performance evaluation show that the proposed algorithm considering the social context can enhance the QoS of users and alleviate the core network load better than the other algorithm that does not exploit the social context.

Performance analysis of information propagation in DTN-like scale-free mobile social network

( Zhifei Wang ),( Su Deng ),( Hongbin Huang ),( Yahui Wu ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2014 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.8 No.11

Mobile social network can be seen as a specific application of the DTN (Delay Tolerant Network), in which the information propagation can be impacted by many social behaviors of the nodes. For a specific node, its social behaviors are various. For example, the node may not be interested in the information before receiving it and may also discard the information after getting it. On the other hand, people are more willing to forward the message to his friends. These interactive behaviors between nodes can be seen as social behaviors. It is easy to see that the impact of the social behaviors is related to the social ties, which can be manifested by the structure of the social network. State of the art works often simply assumes that the social networks can be divided into some communities. At present, some works find that the structure of some social networks is scale-free. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a theoretical model to evaluate the impact of above social behaviors in the DTN-like scale-free network. Simulation shows the accuracy of the model. Numerical results show that both social behaviors and scale-free character have significant impact on information propagation. Moreover, the impact of social behaviors is related to the scale-free character of the networks.

      • The Dynamic Influence Graph Model on Mobile Datasets

2015 International Journal of Database Theory and Appli Vol.8 No.5

With the rapid development of mobile technologies, more and more people are equipped with smartphones. It is possible for scientists to collect and analyze mobile data efficiently. Mobile data contain rich semantic as well as topological information. Rich information can be inferred from these data such as social influence among different nodes in mobile social network. However, it is difficult to estimate the strength of social influence due to the characteristics of inherent dynamic and large scale of mobile social network. In this paper, a Dynamic Influence Graph (DIG) model is proposed which utilizes temporal information in a topological perspective, and an efficient algorithm is proposed based on the DIG model. The proposed algorithm can calculate social influence between any two nodes in a given mobile social network stream segment, and takes edge weights, node connectivity and temporal information into consideration. Experimental results with a real mobile social network dataset show that the proposed approach can infer social influence and achieve a-state-of-the-art accuracy (82-86%) efficiently and automatically.

Vol.16 No.3

In recent years, social networks come into the spotlight as the important ways to find people or share information. Especially, existing social network services based on the Internet, such as Facebook.com and Cyworld.com, are now extended into the mobile environment. A mobile phone easily collects the personal information since it is carried by the user at all times, and various types of data can be gathered together with the advance of sensor technologies. These features differentiate the mobile social network services from the previous Internet-based services. In this paper, we estimate the user’s mobile social contexts like closeness and relationship between the user and surrounding people using Bayesian networks. The mobile social contexts can be employed as important information for providing mobile social network services, and experimental results on real world data have verified their possibilities.

Mobile Interaction in a Usable-Unified-Ubiquitous (U³)Web Service for Real-time Social Networking Service

B Vol.15 No.3

For real-time social networking service, mobile interaction in a usable-unified-ubiquitous (U3) web service was studied. Both as a convenient mobile HCI for real-time social networks and as indexing keys to metadata information in ubiquitous web service, the multi-lingual single-character domain names (e.g. 김.net, 이.net, 가.net, ㄱ.net, ㄴ.net, ㅎ.net, ㅏ.net, ㅔ.net, ㄱ.com, ㅎ.com) are convenient mobile interfaces when searching for social information and registering information. We introduce the sketched design goals and experience of mobile interaction in Korea, Japan and China, with the implementation of real-time social networking service as an example of U3 Web service. We also introduce the possibility of extending the application to the metadata directory service in IP-USN (IP-based Ubiquitous Sensor Network) for a unified information management in the service of social networking and sensor networking.
