Vol.3 No.1

This study was conducted on students in the nursing, dental hygienics, clinical laboratory, dental laboratory science and physiotherapy to understand their degree of awareness, actual condition on infection manegement and how willingly they would practice it so that the importance and need for infection management could be emphasized, which would lead to improved infection management. This study was conducted by using convenience sampling in three colleges located in Dae-jeon, where self-corresponding questionnaires were distributed to students in the departments of dental hygiene, clinical laboratory, dental laboratory science and physiotherapy after obtaining their consents. It turned out that infection management training for students in healthcare faculty would have to be highly recommended because it would provide them a chance to understand how important infection management training would be, and the students could implement it with the education. Perception on infection management is shown higher than degree of their actual conditions and practice will. And it can be concluded that including infection management training in curriculum in faculty of healthcare is necessary so that students have capacity to practice infection management in their future career.

Vol.9 No.2

Objectives: This study aims to develop an evidence-based oral care protocol that caregivers working at elderly facilities can use for proper oral care of the elderly admitted to the longterm care facilities. Methods: An oral care protocol was developed, and five experts of oral care and facility care each participated in a validity test. The validity test sheet indicated the validity test, performance, and the possibility of applying the protocol to all procedures. Results: The content validity of the 1st to 12th steps of the protocol showed a high validity (4.0) or higher for both geriatric facility experts and oral care experts. Besides, in the elderly facility group, the validity (CVI) of whether to perform each stage was relatively low (0.8) in the first stage (product preparation). Conclusions: The validity of the oral care protocol that caregivers in elderly facilities can use was high, and the study subjects confirmed the recognition of the necessity, utility, and usefulness of the developed protocol.

Vol.9 No.2

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of COVID-19 on the dental treatment of patients with disabilities. Methods: The Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service provided data on the National Dental Insurance for the dental treatment of patients with special health care needs (brain disorder, intellectual disability, mental disability, and autistic disorder). These data included the treatment information, number of patients, and billing statements for those who underwent dental treatment from September 2016 to August 2020. Results: Following the first report of COVID-19 in Korea, the number of patients decreased by approximately 30.6% from January 2020 to March 2020. However, in April, the number of patients visiting dental institutions increased by about 25.7%, and this trend continued. When comparing the ratio of dental treatment by region, the rate of dental treatment decreased by approximately 56.3% in Daegu, where the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients increased sharply in February 2020, but the number of patients also increased after April as well. Conclusions: COVID-19 had a short-term effect on the dental treatment of the disabled, but the long-term impact was limited. Comprehensive efforts are needed to improve dental services for people with disabilities and ultimately promote oral health.

Vol.10 No.2

Objectives: To explore the status of awareness and knowledge of oral cancer risk factor education among dental hygienists, with the aim to help develop oral cancer curricula. Methods: A survey was conducted on 195 clinical dental hygienists, and 180 questionnaires were finally analyzed, excluding 15 copies with poor responses. The questionnaire consisted of a risk factor assessment on awareness of oral cancer, the need for oral cancer education, and knowledge about oral cancer risk factors and characteristics. Chi-square test and independent t-test were performed to analyze differences in awareness and knowledge of oral cancer education. Results: The experience of oral cancer education was significantly higher in the younger group and the group with less work experience (P < 0.05). Most participants recognized that oral cancer education was necessary, and the group who experienced oral cancer education responded that oral cancer education was insufficient. Knowledge of oral cancer risk factors allowed the major risk factors for oral cancer to be recognized, but not non-risk factors. Conclusions: Regular oral cancer-related refresh courses are necessary for dental hygienists to receive accurate information about oral cancer and acquire updated knowledge.

Vol.10 No.2

Objectives: The present study aimed to develop and evaluate the usability of a mobile application based on infection prevention and control in dental settings. Methods: The addie (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) model was applied to develop and evaluate this mobile application. The usability evaluation of the mobile application consisted of 15 questions, including four questions on accessibility and access to work, seven questions on pedagogical framework, and four questions on personalization and privacy. The data were analyzed using the SPSS version 26.0. Results: A mobile application operative on various operating systems (Android, iOS) was developed. The usability evaluation of the application provided an overall score of 4.8. In the subscales of the Great App Checklist, the “pedagogical framework” domain received the lowest score of 4.6 and the “personalization and privacy” domain received the highest score of 5.0. Conclusions: In the present study, a new application development plan was devised and presented to maximize learner’s self-directed learning capabilities. We hope that this research will aid in the development and operation of mobile learning-based infection control.

Vol.10 No.2

Objectives: In the current study, we measured the air quality of 60 dental clinics and hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon, with the aim to determine how best to create a pleasant indoor dental environment. Methods: We measured and evaluated the humidity, CO2, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), particulate matter less than 10 μg (PM-10), CO, NO2, and O3 using a uHoo filter. After dividing by area, region, and scale, air quality measurements were performed using an indoor air quality sensor. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20, and the significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The dental air quality of the included clinics was generally within the range of domestic and international standards, but the TVOC level was higher than domestic standards in operating rooms, Gyeonggi, Incheon, and hospitals. Moreover, in hospitals, the level of humidity was higher than the domestic standards, and the level of NO2 was higher than the domestic and international standards in all areas, regions, and scales of medical institutions. Conclusions: The average value of dental air quality measurements differs by region and scale, highlighting the need for systematic education and environmental improvement.
