        영어교육 위기 상황에서의 융합 영어영문학의 역할

        This study aims to offer how English language education based on English literary works (including children's literature) can respond more actively to the current crisis in which 'Korean-style' English language education is heading towards collapse. This study also aims to help English language instructors and scholars themselves understand the pedagogical, ethical, and political aspects of their teaching and research so that learning should be at the heart of all transformative actions against the crisis in the way that English language education can help EFL learners acquire a strong sense of agency, practice critical thinking, and respond to and initiate changes against the crisis. This study 1) critically reflects on the communicative approach that has long dominated our English language teaching and learning; 2) examines the hybridity and non-convergence of the various foreign language teaching and learning principles and methodologies introduced so far and attempts to develop new convergent English language teaching principles, directions, and methodologies with a humanistic approach as the centerpiece; and finally, 3) explores the necessity, importance, and methodology of shifting to content-competence- based English language teaching. It is hoped that these efforts can be integrated to overcome the gap between English language teaching practices and the world outside the classroom, thus helping overcome the current crisis in English language education from within and outside.

        The Analysis o f English Modal Auxiliaries: A Discourse Modality Approach

        To explain the actual meanings of english modal auxiliaries, I introduce the Manyard s Discourse Modality as framework. In dealing with English modal auxiliaries, the framework does not have any trouble in most parts. However, it has to be modified a little to be a comprehensive framework because it was originally proposed not for the English but for the Japanese. With this modified Discourse Modality, I will show that it can comprehend not only general types of modality, which has been already distinguished by many scholars, but also the actual pragmatic aspects of modal auxiliaries, which they have not considered. This is undertaken by analyzing English modal auxiliaries must/have got to and can/may.

        로고테라피치료의 이해와 철학상담적 한계

        Today human is suffering mental agonies from existential vacuum, or sense of no Meaning about life in spite of the affluence of material and information in the ‘the material civilization’ or ‘information age’. Logotherapy will help those who suffer from noogenic neuro psychosis to regain hope, purpose and the meaning of life. Therefore through this paper, I study Viktor Frankel s ideas and try to understand theory of logotherapy and he way of human existence as ‘a seeker of meaning’. In addition, I show that the treatment of logotherapy and application of the virtual philosophy counseling and reveal a positive aspect of existentialist philosophical approach on logo therapy and limits to philosophy counseling.

        중학교 영어과 최소성취기준 개발 연구

        This research aims to develop minimal achievement standards based on the 2015 revised national curriculum and identify potential issues to lay the foundation for the future development of the minimal achievement standards for the 2022 revised national curriculum. The minimal achievement standards of the 2015 revised national curriculum were developed based on the "low" level assessment criteria, with additional examples of level-appropriate tasks. The draft underwent multiple expert reviews and was revised accordingly. The conclusion of this research suggests that each grade should have its own minimal standards instead of having one-size-fits-all standards for all middle school grades. This will better reflect the appropriate achievement levels for each grade. Additionally, there is a need for assessment tools that can evaluate students who fall below the minimal achievement standard, and educational materials should be developed based on the minimal achievement standards. Further research is necessary to update the minimal achievement standards in accordance with the up-to-date 2022 revised curriculum.

        헤럴드 프레드릭과 비판적 사실주의

        Although unknown to the Korean readers, Harold Frederic as a pioneer of realism has been actively researched in major countries. To provide a window into 19th-century British and American society, this study aims to study Harold Frederick's masterpieces such as The Damnation of Theron Ware(1896), as well as his short story "Brother Sebastian's Friendship,"(1887) the seed of his representative work. Many of his novels and journal articles reflect very objectively and faithfully the trajectory of various individuals and the 19th- century society he personally experienced as the London correspondent for The New York Times. Here, this paper examines the author's life and his works classified as the three categories: the historical fiction related to his ancestors during the independent days in the upstate of New York, the capitalistic American background novels about the widespread secularization and degradation of Puritan purity in the late 19th century, and nonfiction about European conservative and aristocratic class. If we look through his works, we can see that he was a thoroughly critical realist writer with a cosmic and eclectic vision.

        『기록실로의 여행』에 나타난 대체역사 연구: 뇌조작을 통한 기억 이식의 관점에서

        This paper aims to clarify the ways of rewriting another American history(alternative America) in Travels in the Scriptorium by Paul Auster. In Travels in the Scriptorium, readers see an old man in a room sitting on the narrow bed. The reason why I focus on the old man in this work is that he seems like a man having false memory caused by the brain’s flaws which we could see are manipulated by brain surgery. As a result of the surgery, his mind is elsewhere, stranded among the figments in his head as he searches for an answer to the question that haunts him. He cannot memorize anything about himself or things that he did in the past due to the brain’s flaws. He is just confined in the room and forced to finish the story of a report on the desk. The report tells an imaginative story of relation between Confederation and Alien Territories in 1830s which could be replaced by the history of American Indian War. In this kind of situation, Auster shows us the potential aspects of replacing(rewriting) factual history with another one by way of manipulating human memories in terms of brain surgery. In addition, the writer Auster may give warning that we could live in the course of manipulated history, as well as be forced to rewrite alternative history ourselves.

        구동사의 불변화사 DOWN 의미 분석: 중학교 영어 교과서 기반

        The purpose of this paper is to examine the meanings of the particle ‘DOWN’ in phrasal verbs found on 37 publishers of the middle school English textbooks based on Lee(2004), Park(2012), and Collins COBUILD Phrasal Verbs Dictionary. As the main media for English learners, middle school English textbooks, must pay attention to contain the various meanings of phrasal verbs for the communication-oriented English education. To find the core-meaning and extended-meaning of phrasal verbs from textbooks, the procedure was to collect the particle ‘DOWN’ within the complete sentence units in the reading context of the middle school English textbooks and to analyze based on Park's (2012) categories. The results of this study shows that the core-meanings of particle ‘DOWN’ were distributed, but the extended-meanings were limited. In conclusion, to learn the various meanings of phrasal verbs effectively, it is necessary to present the core-meaning and extended-meaning of the phrasal verbs in the middle school textbooks context.

        모국어와 외국어 습득에 관한 보편문법의 역설

        In this paper, I discuss the two issues: the properties of the language acquisition device, an biological organ related to the human language and Plato’s and Orwell’s problems, which are well known as the problems of language acquisition. The nature of human language, that is, creativity and arbitrariness, are also discussed based on the theory of generative grammar. It is argued that the working principle of the algorithm of the language acquisition device enables the chemical combination of essential elements of language, which leads to the creativity and arbitrariness of language. Plato s problem related to the native language acquisition is accounted for by the maturation of the biological language organ and by the substantial minimalism and derivational minimalism. For Orwell s problem related to foreign language acquisition, I tried to find the answer in Chomsky’s(1981) principles and parameters theory. Although all languages are composed by the same principle, the differential characteristics of each language comes from its parameters. The greater differences of parameters between the native language and the foreign language lead to the greater difficulties experienced by foreign language learners. Therefore, in the case of learning a foreign language which has different parameters from the native language, I argue that starting the foreign language learning early is more effective in reducing the difficulty of learning the language.

        상황학습이론을 적용한 영어과 수업 지도안 개발

        This study shortly reviews the importance of English lesson plan and situated learning theory. The study is performed to notice the importance of lesson plan to process smooth progress of the English learning and improve actual English teaching-learning focusing on teaching inert knowledge. To upgrade the traditional English education, this study develops the lesson plan, concluding situated learning theory with cooperative learning and action learning. I concludes that situated learning theory is effective for English learners to improve their communicative skill which is the ultimate purpose of learning English. The lesson plan is used in the competition of the demonstrative learning-teaching method in Dankook University-Graduate School of education. I hopes the further research to deal with the effect of situated learning theory on the development of lesson plans in the real classroom.
