The Analysis o f English Modal Auxiliaries: A Discourse Modality Approach
Kim Yoomi 융합영어영문학회 2009 융합영어영문학(구.English Reading and Teaching) Vol.1 No.1
To explain the actual meanings of english modal auxiliaries, I introduce the Manyard s Discourse Modality as framework. In dealing with English modal auxiliaries, the framework does not have any trouble in most parts. However, it has to be modified a little to be a comprehensive framework because it was originally proposed not for the English but for the Japanese. With this modified Discourse Modality, I will show that it can comprehend not only general types of modality, which has been already distinguished by many scholars, but also the actual pragmatic aspects of modal auxiliaries, which they have not considered. This is undertaken by analyzing English modal auxiliaries must/have got to and can/may.

이예라 융합영어영문학회 2023 융합영어영문학(구.English Reading and Teaching) Vol.8 No.1
Mark Twain, writer of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, lived in the second half of the 19th century. It was a period in which slavery contrasted with the spirit of equality and freedom, the chief ideology of America. After the Civil War, slavery was abolished, but the harmful effects and segregated social atmosphere in which African-Americans were abused persisted. Slavery was the impetus for the Civil War. The war revealed the differences between the South and North, the pursuit of material possessions, and increased conflicts between white people and the successful class and African-Americans. Against this background, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn showcases the society of the South, racial conflict, and the pursuit of ethical development through Huck, a 14-year-old boy. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn consists of various stories in which Huck escapes from the society that restrains him and meets Jim, a slave, and their experiences as they travel along the Mississippi. Mark Twain criticizes the customs and harmful effects of civilized society through this work and shows Huck’s will to achieve ethical maturity. Nature plays a role throughout Huck’s journey and is a friend to him, helping to show the completion of his ethical maturity. Huck escapes from a riverside village and civilized society, as shown through the roles of the river and raft. Ultimately through all circumstances, Huck experiences progresses in his pursuit of mental development.

김동미 융합영어영문학회 2023 융합영어영문학(구.English Reading and Teaching) Vol.8 No.1
The purpose of the paper is to compare and analyze the English sentences were shown in the TOEIC textbook and Korean translation sentences according to them, based on the translation style, which is one of the basic theories of translation studies. To understand the concept of translation by first examining the theory of translation that has been dealt with in previous studies. And based on this, to analyze the English sentences covered in various TOEIC textbooks and the translated Korean sentences. Among the many sentences that appeared, sentences with severe translation were extracted and analyzed. Therefore, considering that this study presented another guideline in translation research by studying the awkwardness of Korean translation that English learners may feel while learning in the TOEIC textbook, the meaning and value of this study are fully appreciated.

정길화 융합영어영문학회 2022 융합영어영문학(구.English Reading and Teaching) Vol.7 No.2
This study focuses on the problems in translation and creative interpretation by using bilingual texts. Bilingual here means English and “Hangeul,”which is Korean. As a professor majoring in English literature, I have been teaching English and literature mainly in elective courses. And I am more aware of the importance of English as a global language. The professors in the elective courses using bilingual texts should encourage students, even impromptu, to translate some parts into English, or Korean, at any time during the classes. The effect is that students will participate in active learning. That is, by using bilingual literature texts and attempting a new translation, students will be able to enlarge their humanistic imagination and creativity. I emphasize the development of bilingual texts and classes in abreast with the translation of Korean literature for its globalization and of the world literature into Korean. This is a process of learning to have a deep thought and understanding of human science through the development of literature and art which goes beyond the mere dimension of language ability.
김미숙(Kim, Mi-sook) 융합영어영문학회 2017 융합영어영문학(구.English Reading and Teaching) Vol.2 No.1
The purpose of this study is to show the challenges and conflicts of Herman Melville s Christian doctrine through the analysis of Moby Dick. Melville has a lifelong interest in the Christian faith and the Bible. He becomes interested in the doctrine of Calvinism through the influence of the religious education. Melville shows his view of Christian doctrine through Captain Ahab and Ishmael, who are similar to him. Melville describes his intentions through Ahab about the predestination. Ahab loses his leg to Moby Dick, a white whale. This pain causes Ahab to seek vengeance against Moby Dick. However, this vengeance was already predestinated for Ahab a million years ago, and he blames the predestination of God. On the other hand, an example of free will is described through Ishmael, the narrator of this novel. Ishmael likens it to the loom weaving the fabric of destiny. In other words, the movement of the loom is the same as the free will. The intended destiny is that it changes into various forms, such as a coincidence, or a movement of a stick that binds a shuttle according to free will. Therefore, Melville protestes against predestination through Ahab, and Ishmael s philosophical thoughts raise his objection to Calvinist agenda.
